Microsoft’s moribund Windows RT rasps out death rattle

“The death knell is sounding for Microsoft’s Windows RT operating system. But will the Redmond, Wash.-based software company give up or keep performing CPR on it?” Patrick Seitz reports for Investor’s Business Daily.

“Launched eight months ago with Microsoft’s Surface tablets, Windows RT was touted as the first version of Windows written to run on low-power ARM-based processors,” Seitz reports. “However, Windows RT can only run specially written programs, so software made for Windows PCs is not compatible with it. And the number of Windows RT software apps remains limited.”

Seitz reports, “Nokia reportedly has canceled plans to come out with a Windows RT tablet… Nokia has been a die-hard supporter of Microsoft’s mobile software, going all in on Windows Phone for its smartphones. So if it is bailing on Windows RT, the future can’t be too bright for the fledgling operating system.”

MacDailyNews Take: As if beleaguered Nokia’s future isn’t about as bright as a black hole itself.

Seitz reports, “In January, Samsung canceled plans to release a Windows RT tablet in the U.S., citing weak demand. In May, HTC scrapped plans to produce a full-sized tablet computer running Windows RT.”

MacDailyNews Take: Ahh, Microsoft’s oh-so-frequent death rattles are luxurious elixirs for the soul. The bliss that courses through our palatial hallways with stories like these is so overwhelmingly intense. It’s like a tech porno in here sometimes! (We know, TMI.)

Microsoft suffers from delusions of grandeur. They think they matter and that people will buy their pretend iPad over other pretend iPads because it’s from Microsoft. Microsoft does not matter. Microsoft no longer has the power to sell superfluous products. The world already has iPad. The thinking world finally woke up and moved on from Microsoft’s soul-sapping dreck. That clueless Microsoft haven’t figured this out years ago (Zune, Kin, how many total face-plants do they need?) is illustrative of the depths of their delusions.

As with Zune, Kin, and Surface, Microsoft is unnecessary in today’s world. Their rapidly retiring/expiring IT Doofus firewall is the only thing keeping them around today.MacDailyNews Take, October 24, 2012

  1. Windows 8 has the same basic flaws, and the fact that Windows 8 CAN run older non-touch desktop Windows apps is not an advantage; that is the biggest flaw of all.

    1. Very surprising to hear that. Black holes are called “BLACK” because they do NOT radiate EM energy. Black holes will suck in even light from the outside nevermind allowing light to be radiated out.

    2. Dave, have you ever seen the video of stars whizzing around the black hole at the center of the Milky Way? In the video, the black hole is invisible. I believe that’s why they call it black. And as Ken said, the only thing about it that’s visible is when gas surround the BH is accelerated to near light speed as it’s sucked in. That is, if there is any nearby gas to suck on.

    1. Why not? Liquor companies do it all the time. They take the same crap, age it slightly and chagr you 50 bucks more.

Only using windows rt is way worse than. Hang over

  2. Seriously? I know this is MacDaily and all but in a little under a year, Windows 8 has outsold almost all variants of OSX combined. So before we all get up on our high hobby horses, please keep your ego’s in check!

    1. I don’t think they are talking about Windows 8. The article is, I believe, about Windows RT.

While it is true that the sheer number of Win 8 sales does outnumber Macs, this is only because it is the only option on new computers. Comparing system upgrades of older machines, Win 8 fails miserably, arguably worse than Vista. Very large percentage of all Windows users are still on Windows XP (which came out about the same time as OS X 10.1 Puma!!).

    2. You have to be kindling right? You say all variants. You must have forgotten that iOS is a variant of OSX. MS only recently announced 100 million copies of W8 sold. If I recall Apple sold somewhere around 30 million iPhones last quarter alone lest we count the iPad, iPad mini, iPod touch, and then we can include the computers.

    3. Seriously? I know your handle is Holly Tucker and all, but it would help if you read the article a little more carefully. So, before you get up on your high hobby horse, please keep your reading glasses on.

    1. No, it is good to have the collapse of the Microsoft Windows OS being added to the growth of the Mac OS X computers. Apple’s Mac sales are holding up the real story of the collapse of Windows. When the OS X and non-OS X computer sales are considered, the true story is told and iOS devices are not counted. iOS is a stripped down OS X. They count the Windows based time clocks, scales, POS cash registers, … But, an iOS iPad that does so much more is not counted. Like an ostrich with it head in the hole in the sand, they still think they are winning.

    2. No. We want Microsoft to stay around and develop more battles with Google, like in search, to take business away from Google and distract it. In reality, Apple is much better off with Microsoft as its primary competitor than Google, which just copies without regard for IP ownership. Microsoft at least tries to honor IP.

  3. Windows 8 is a total mess. Microsoft really dont have any direction. This is why they’ve ended up with a schizophrenic O.S. It was as if Microsoft were forced to throw out an upgrade just for the sake of it. Windows RT Was just a hyped up ball of gas with no real substance

  4. Ballmer’s going to go down in history as the guy who took Microsoft down.

He’s not only not a good people person, he’s definitely not a salesman, riding in mostly on Gates tail.

  5. According to my crystal ball watch, Windows RT won’t be declared “dead” for another YEAR. Hurray. That’s more money out of Microsoft’s cache horde. Pride goeth before a red line entry.

    Spend Microsoft Spend SPEND SPEND!

  6. This was a good idea.
What destroyed it was the Surface Pro tablets that us running normal Windows and Windows Phone. RT and Windows phone should be merged and Pro tablets discontinued.
