“The iPhone can already do a lot of things, but here’s a new trick: An app released today by Rolocule Games pairs with users’ Apple TVs and turns the phone into a Wiimote-style motion controller,” Eric Johnson reports for AllThingsD.
“The end result: Just in time for Wimbledon, a tennis game app designed for your TV (or computer) that turns swinging your iPhone into an onscreen avatar swinging a virtual racket,” Johnson reports. “The novelty is that the game runs on the phone as-is, without the need of any peripheral hardware besides the Apple TV.”
Johnson reports, “The game, Motion Tennis, works over Apple’s AirPlay Mirroring technology, which can beam the audio and video from most iPhones, iPads and iPod touches over Wi-Fi onto second- and third-generation Apple TVs. ”

Why do people want dedicated apple tv apps when this is possible? (Real question looking for real non sarcastic answers)
The AppleTV has constant power and so developers have less to worry about. Additionally, with line power available Apple is free to beef up the AppleTV with the kind of CPU/GPU power to host multiplayer games.
Just got it and played it … awesome. Can’t wait for others to get it to host a match. Apple and partners are on their way to taking over the living room and game room!
Just got it to try it out and I suppose if you like games it’s OK. But to me it’s like most electronic games, boring after a few minutes and ultimately pointless. None of my computers, iPhones or iPad have any games on them, but they do have plenty of actually useful apps.
