Amir Efrati reports for The Wall Street Journal, “Google Inc. is developing a videogame console and digital wristwatch powered by its Android operating system, according to people familiar with the matter, as the Internet company seeks to spread the software’s domination beyond smartphones and tablets and build the company’s reputation as a hardware maker.”
MacDailyNews Take: Google’s Android does not dominate tablet or smartphone profits. Just units shipped – thanks to cheap, low-, no-, or negative-margin Chinese feature phones, forked builds from the likes of Amazon (that do not benefit Google in any way, shape, or form), and endless Buy One Get X Free promotions designed to rope in the ignorant. Apple takes the lion’s share of the profits in both the smartphone and tablet markets that they created.
Efrati reports, “With the watch and game console, Google is hoping to combat similar devices that Apple Inc. may release in the future, the people said.”
MacDailyNews Take: Uh oh, with no Eric T. Mole in position on Apple’s BoD, they’ll be about as successful as they’ve been combating the iPad that Steve Jobs smartly hid from him.
Efrati reports, “The Internet giant hopes to design and market the devices itself and release at least one of them this fall, they added… The people briefed on the matter said Google is reacting in part to expectations that rival Apple will launch a videogame console as part of its next Apple TV product release… Last fall Google said it was on track to generate $8 billion annually in gross revenue from mobile devices, though some analysts say the majority of Google’s net mobile revenue comes from Web search and YouTube used on Apple devices.”
Efrati reports, “Jen-Hsun Huang, the chief executive of Nvidia Corp., which makes microchips for devices powered by Android, said in a recent interview that over time there would be three billion people who use Android devices… ‘If you’re a child living outside of California, your first device is likely to be Android,’ he said.”

Google’s marketing ahead of real hard products and WS is buying into perception. In reality, the consumer may not buy any of Google’s products.

Christ, you’ll have to do better than that, to avoid looking like a halfwit. I mean we all know you are, but you just make it so obvious. Google copying what? Analysts are talking about an Apple Watch, but where’s the evidence? And in any case, as others have pointed out, there are a number of smart watches on the market, and where did most of them get their idea from? It wouldn’t be the last iPod Nano, which came with a watch face, and an OS? If, and it’s a big if, Apple do introduce a smart watch, they are only following a prescedent that they set, and others have slavishly copied when net talk about an iWatch surfaced.
And as for a gaming console, what’s an iPhone or iPad, if not a game console? How else do you play the games on them?

Who are they following? Sony? They have had a smart watch for years. Foxconn? They announced that they are preparing a new smart watch today. They have been around for a long time. It’s not a new idea.
Google is grasping for everything.
Just what I need is advertising & tracking on my wrist.
Google is playing chess and smartly countering Apple’s every move. This is something investors find exciting. Google’s product may not be the best or sell the most, but they will keep Google in the game and very much favored by investors. With all the money Apple has it could easily play this game against Google’s search engine business, but Apple just won’t play and the stock will continue to take heavy losses. Apple’s management is either clueless or just doesn’t care to play the game to raise investor interest.
Wasn’t Microsoft playing that game for a while? How’d that work out for them?

Throw hundreds of half-baked ideas at the wall and see what sticks. Remember how Google Wave was going to be the end of email, IM, wikis and all lesser, mediaeval collaboration tools? Just one among many such.
No doubt these products will be as wildly successful as Google TV, Chromebook and the Nexus Q.
I do find it funny if sad that so many Americans, so called expert or otherwise, are rooting for a company in Google that only makes real money for Asian companies and sets an example that signals inevitable decline in their own economy. I would say Lemming if that weren’t simply another imaginary media hit piece that become more real than the actual reality. In that lays the danger for Apple sadly.

The phrase ‘Google game console’ leads me to think of a white screen with fighting stick figures.
The phrase ‘Google smartwatch’ leads me to think of something available in 5 shades of white with stick figure hands telling the time, and a little teeny Google search box on its little teeny screen.
But of course, I’m being silly. Google will immediate raid Apple’s pantry again for copy-paste ideas to plaster on top of their boring stick figures on white inventiveness.
Yea, there are allot if family offers of Samsung phones these days. But in all fairness, the same was true for the iPhone 1-2 years ago.
