“Apple’s popular iTunes app might be available for the desktop mode of Windows 8, but Microsoft wants the company to create a “Metro” version,” Tom Warren reports for The Verge.
” In an interview with CNN Money, Windows CFO Tami Reller revealed that Microsoft has tried to convince Apple to build an iTunes Windows 8 app, saying ‘the welcome mat has been laid out. It’s not for lack of trying,'” Warren reports.

David Goldman reports for CNN Money, “Apple’s reluctance to make a Windows 8 app isn’t surprising. Though the company has been willing to write software for Windows, including iTunes, Safari, and Quicktime, Apple is in a very different position in the PC market than it is in the tablet market.”
“There’s no reason for Apple to help make the Surface a better product,” Goldman reports. “Microsoft does have a built-in Music app for Windows 8 that allows users to organize their music. Reller said that one day, Windows users may consider the Music app a viable alternative, but iTunes remains by far the most popular choice among music fans.”

Could have easily said “right after Microsoft finishes up Office for iOS.”
I’m a heavy user of Excel. It’s the only MSFT product I use, and I can tell you with certainty, that doing anything more than reading a document would be a waste of time on an iPad.
Oh, I don’t think it’d be that bad with a Bluetooth keyboard.
Besides, the point isn’t as much creating spreadsheets out of thin air, but about being able to display and occasionally edit existing files.
Only a waste of time if you have not bothered to learn anything. There are many keyboards available for iPad, as intellinent people know. And Numbers does most of what Excel does.
Pivot tables absent.
Why would Apple ever place iTunes on Microsofts Surfaces.
iPhone and iPad, gain Music and Applications for Apple devices through iTunes – It doesn’t make sense at all for Microsoft to ask Apple to setup iTunes on the Surface at all? Movies and Music will be all that customers can consume.

My how the worm has turned. No one cares about Microsoft Office as being Mission Critical to a platform anymore and now Microsoft wants Apple’s help for one of their failing platforms. Maybe Apple could buy $150 million of Microsoft stock just as a gesture and then call it a day.

Apple should have dealt with them on stuff. Make Office for iPad and we will do iTunes for Metro.
I think Apple would lose with that trade.
Maybe MS should run a parallels type program, so their computers could run the superior OS.

Keep MS Office out of the iPad. I don’t care for Office. iWork is a perfectly capable alternative in a touch enabled device. Apple made iWork for iOS simple to use, intuitive and responsive to touch gestures. You can, if you wish use, a Bluetooth keyboard as an alternate method of entry in Pages and Numbers but both work equally well with touch inputs via the onscreen keyboard.
I don’t need no stinking Office for the iPad. And really if you think about it, Apple made iWork for the iPad specially optimised for the way the iPad works. Do you think that Microsoft with its ham-fisted approach to UI design would make anything as elegant as iWork for iOS? I say no, as Office for iOS would only subtract from the iOS experience, not add to it.
MS can keep its rubbish to itself. As for iTunes for W8 Metro, I think Apple knew instinctively that no matter how hard it tried it wouldn’t be able to make an elegant looking iTunes that was consistent with the Metro theme and so didn’t bother messing around developing a Metro version.

Completely agree. What I don’t get is Apple’s lack of support of iWork on the Mac. Do they have some agreement with M$ not to promote/compete iWork so M$ will keep providing Mac users with something they think, but don’t actually, need? It is very confounding. There are several features missing from Pages and Keynote, but they are still better than Word and Powerpoint. Numbers is a whole other matter. The only piece of M$ crapware I still have to use is Excel.
The problem I have is that I bought pages for my new iMac loaded at source which sadly I cannot update as although App Store tells me its available it then wont update telling me I don’t own the software. Apple Support seem unable to help. Then today I try to open my Pages files on my old iMac which I had subsequently updated to Snow Leopard and what do I find but it tells me simply ‘can’t open’ with no explanation. So all my files would be useless except my new unupdatable Pages will thankfully open them. This hardly gives me confidence in iWork. I havnt tried my old iWeb yet if that is similarly effected then there goes all my web sites too as I don’t have that on my new Mac. This is what I dumped Microsoft to avoid. ‘Just Works’ is looking pretty pathetic to me at present.
And this is my problem how? for 99% of users iWork is no problem. There is no claim to absolute perfection.

The birth of the Digital Hub and attaching devices to your PC started with Mac but sales were down. iTunes opened the ecosystem up and has conquered triumphantly. WinPC sales are eroded and continue to dive. There is no longer a need for converters to the Mac Platform. Apple has two amazingly successful operating systems iOS and OSX. And Mac sales are increasing also. No need. The Trade off is pointless.
Microsoft ask if Google will setup Play on Surface.

Apple wont make a Metro version of iTunes because it would cost more to develop than they would make off of music sales
to Surface users, because:
1 Windows users don’t spend as much as Apple users
and
2 There are not enough Surface tablets in the wild to even call a “market”
Until last year consumers bought 70% of all desktop/laptop computers. I don’t think they are buying that many any more because of the iPad.
Office is an enterprise necessity (30% – 35% of total computer market). There is very little, if any, need for it on consumer devices. I wouldn’t be surprised to see iWork usage exceed that of Office by 2020, just because consumer needs are so much different than enterprise, and there’s a hell of a lot more of them.
Apple is consigning MSFT to the enterprise, and then infiltrating that segment through the back door.
So in other words you are saying Apple is sticking a dull knife slowly towards MicoSofts heart. MS will become like IBM someday in the future.

More MDN snark. Apple already makes iTunes for Windows, so you know darn well iTunes will be ported to whatever platforms will ensure that the store is available to the masses.
Like it or not, iTunes is Apple’s “Office” — not offering it to future Windows versions hurts Apple as much, perhaps more than MS not offering Office for iOS.
Now Apple needs to restore the functionality to iTunes that it totally screwed up in version 11.

Apple should make itune for windows phone just like how google is making bunch of apps for apple. If itune is not on windows phone, their users eventually gonna use something else and apple is gonna lost that portion of the profit.
Where’s the MS Office Suite for iOS like for the Mac Citizen Gates?
If Apple is going to design software for Windows 8 I think Microsoft should have evidence that more than 5,000 people not living in Washington state actually use Windows 8. Personally, Apple may not find it worth the expense to design any application that doesn’t have a user base of at least a couple million.
Well they have to some day.
Anyway. Apple and its users want Office for iOS and Microsoft want iTunes. So maybe there can be an exchange? 🙂
