“A report from the Far East on Tuesday says struggling LCD manufacturer and Apple supplier Sharp is ready to ramp up display manufacture for the next-generation iPhone, with mass production slated to start next month,” Mikey Campbell reports for AppleInsider.
“Sharp will supposedly be using its Kameyama Plant No. 1 to churn out LCDs bound for the so-called ‘iPhone 5S,’ Apple’s much-rumored next-generation handset expected to see release in the third quarter, reports Japan’s Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun,” Campbell reports. “In addition to Sharp, the publication reported that Japan Display, a company combining the display arms of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba, and LG Display have also received orders, with mass production at those firms already underway.”
Campbell reports, “Apple’s next-generation smartphone is expected to retain the same display as the current iPhone 5, with rumored upgrades being a fingerprint sensor, faster A7 SoC and inclusion of the iOS 7 mobile operating system, among others.”

MacDailyNews Take: “iPhone 5S” is a horrid name. It looks like “iPhone SS” or “iPhone 55” in print. We hope Apple has a better name for it than that.

Agreed MDN! iPhone 5S would be a huge mistake on many fronts! They need to embrace that this is the 6th iPhone and it should be called iPhone 6 whether or not it retains the same look or not. Even the iPhone 4 to 4S was bigger set of changes than the name suggested! Dual core, dual antenna, much better camera… In many ways it was a more substantial hardware upgrade then the 4S to the 5 IMO. I know that sounds like a stupid statement, but really aside from the new form, LTE, and faster processor… It really lacked any huge revolutionary leaps forward! begone with the 4,4S,5,5S crap. Even Samsung is smart enough to market a new model with more than adding a stupid letter to the end of the name!

Terry Gau of Foxconn was going to buy into Sharp. I don’t know if he ever did though.

From Wall Street Cheat Street: “Several months ago, Apple’s smartphone rival Samsung (SSNLF.PK) made a $112 million investment in Sharp which some observers felt might threaten Apple’s supply chain. However, Samsung’s negligible 3 percent stake in Sharp doesn’t give it much leverage over the company. Foxconn, which is one of Apple’s biggest suppliers, also has a stake in the Japanese electronics company.”

Agreed! The ‘New iPhone’ is what it should be called. Especially if they release it far ahead of the 5s’ one year anniversary.
This upward numbering scheme should stop. The iMac is now the iMac no matter what upgrade it gets so do the iPod variations and BMW’s stay the 3 series 5 series etc even when replaced with new models. As soon as you up the number you set limits for yourself and keeping the previous models in production as the cheaper alternatives just makes you feel like you are buying dated products. Create 2 models one more up market and the lesser one can incorporate much of the tech from last years upper model yet still be seen as a new model. then you don’t get arguments over whether any given phone is worth a jump in number or not and you can update them incrementally to stay up or ahead of the opposition as various technology becomes available while still having the big launce of a new model as required and appropriate.
It’ll be 5S. In the right font it’ll look fine.

I for one think iPhone SS is a good name. Since SS usualy stands for Super Sport. You’d have to be a car person to get it.
Or SS could stand for iPhone See-yuh Samsung.
Not sure that the iPhone SS would sell well in Europe.
What a bunch if whiners on here. Complaining about what the name probably will be on a product they will probably want to get no matter what the name is. Apple should name the new phone the iPhone FU just for the whiners.
