Apple’s iWatch imminent?

A clever little birdy just told us:

Well, there are a bunch of them…

– “It’s not about time.”
– “It’s about time, and so much more.”
– “Watch and see.”

…to name just three.

I think it’s coming sooner than later.

MacDailyNews Take: Hmm.

    1. You’re not the birdy? Then who IS the birdy? I gots ta know, man! (Because I want to know if these are reliable, or just obvious slogans anyone could claim came from Apple.)

… Please be Apple, and not some random person stirring up excitement for their own amusement …

    2. The “industry experts” called for Apple to release a “Mac netbook”; Apple’s answer – iPad.

The same experts now call for Apple to release a “low-cost iPhone”; Apple’s answer this time – iWatch.

It’s quite obvious to the “little birdies,” but not the experts…

(It also makes sense that the iPod nano was redesigned last year so that I could NOT be used as a watch.)

      1. I SOOOO agree. People talk about iWatch as a companion device for iOS units – well maybe, but I remain to be convinced its a must-buy.
But iWatch as “iPhone nano” makes perfect sense – a cheap iPhone with a plastic back doesn’t seem to cut margins enough to be a better idea than selling older models off cheep.
But a new device where people trade the large-screen functionality of iPhone for both a cheap price AND the “cool factor” of a video phone on your wrist, seems believable to me.

        1. Thats rather cool – well said – I like your excitement and explanation of such a device… I could get into a Dick Tracy Watch – from Apple.

        2. Honestly, though, I can’t see people sacrificing smartphone functionality for it. It seems like the opposite direction to go, unless the screen is large enough to do texting, emails, games, and reading. But if the screen is large enough to do that, it’s no longer an “iPhone nano.”

Seems to me like the ideal “iWatch as phone” would be an iPhone slap-bracelet, but that could be a couple years down the road if they’re using Corning’s Willow Glass.

        3. Whats wrong with a simpler Smart device that purposed to do core Apple features extremely well without 3rd party trick ponies?????

Apple can provide a tiny phone on the wrist of your arm, that requires no connectivity to your phone… it is the phone… proving ultimately, that screen size doesn’t matter… the user experience does.

        4. What you’re describing isn’t a smart device. You’re describing a feature device. And that’s a huge step backwards for Apple. An mp3 device can have a bare-bones model like the Shuffle, or a feature model like the Nano, without causing any trouble because an mp3 player is nothing more than an accessory.

But the world has come to expect more from phones, and Apple retreating into the feature phone space (especially with something as inelegant as a watch) would sacrifice the great experience that makes an iPhone an iPhone. The biggest selling point is the App ecosystem, more than any individual phone’s specs. But the watch would also require huge trade-offs in terms of specs–not just screen size, but camera quality, battery life, etc., especially if you’re trying to fit it into a watch-sized package.

The iWatch, at least with what’s capable today, needs to be an accessory. A companion device. Because trying to make it a full-size watch right now would just produce an overall bad product.

        5. I like this idea — “that Apple can strive to further simplify a smart device” — either a less expensive phone that is a Simpler Smartphone yet purely Apple to the core; no installable 3rd party apps… OR a Smart but simpler device that remains for communications. Either way, its a win for Apple.

    1. OK Who is Dick Tracey?
You realize 95% of the people have no idea.
      Diet Smith –
An industrialist who supplied advanced equipment for Tracy and the police department. Responsible for the creation of the Space Coupe, The Wrist Radio, Wrist TV, Wrist Computer, and Wrist Genee. Originally suspected of murdering his partner in 1946 in his first appearance. Regularly seen drinking glasses of milk.

    1. I think those are leaked catch lines from an Apple product tease.

Siri, hail me a cab and reserve a table for two at the Provocateur at nine-thirty. Call you-know-who and have him meet me there.

  1. What is this? Is it a prediction or part of an ad campaign? I’m looking forward to the iWatch. I hope it’s as beautiful and functional as my iPhone and iPad.

    1. I agree. I’ve been following MDN for quite awhile and their summary of an article usually include a link directly to an article from another website and an MDN spin.

I’ve rarely seen a posting like this where it looks like a direct commentary from MDN themselves.

  2. As an old journalist, I know this game. If it was a rumor, there would be more to it. But this concise, unembellished comment means something more. It’s all but confirmed!

  3. What do you do when in front of your TV?… You watch it! Wonder if Apple’s iWatch isn’t about something for your wrist but something for your living room. But what about AppleTV? There’s still going to be people not buying a Apple brand TV but yet want “Apple’s Connectivity” to their TV so that product is still going to be needed. IN the meantime, MS, Samsung, Google and everyone else will be blindsided by this end run as their R&D is trying to build a watch, Apple’s just sitting back laughing at them.

Just some musings… Right or Wrong.
