“Time Warner Cable Inc, the second-largest U.S. cable operator, is adding live out-of-home programming for the first time to its TWC TV application, letting customers watch shows on Apple Inc. mobile devices,” Alex Sherman reports for Bloomberg.
“Time Warner Cable will make as many as 11 live national news, sports and entertainment channels available outside the home starting at 10 a.m. New York tomorrow, according to Maureen Huff, a company spokeswoman,” Sherman reports. “They include the Big Ten Network, the Pac-12 Network, TV Guide Network and BBC America. In addition, customers will have access to some local channels, including NY1 for New Yorkers. The programming will be available for Apple’s iPad, iPad Mini [sic], iPhone and iPod iTouch [yeesh, double-sic].”
Sherman reports, “Time Warner Cable was the first company to bring live TV to the iPad inside the home in March 2011.”

For this to be profitable for TWC, it will need to monitor/prevent multiple people from sharing a password.
When content is delivered via a cable or dish, it is relatively difficult for friends/family in various locations to share the cost of a single account. However, when content is delivered via the web/wifi, password-sharing groups could conceivably cut TWC’s revenues by 50% or more. Thus, the company will need to punish such behavior for out-of-home service to remain viable.
Thanks for the news! I found out about this update when I got to work at DISH today; a coworker sent me the link. It’s cool that TW started offering live streaming outside of the home, but their options seem very limited. What good are 9 lesser watched channels; especially when customers have to have Verizon to stream. I might be a little spoiled by the DISH Anywhere app though; it streams every TV channel I subscribe to, along with recordings from my DVR, and it works over any 3g, 4g or WIFI network I have access to. It’s the only app that gives me the choices that really should come with true TV everywhere.
Except you have to have a #%!^& Dish, eh? No thanks.
