Apple, Yahoo discuss deeper iOS integration, sources say

“Yahoo Inc. and Apple Inc. are getting cozier,” Amir Efrati and Jessica E. Lessin report for The Wall Street Journal. “The two companies have been discussing how more of Yahoo’s services can play a prominent role on Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices, people briefed on the matter said.”

“Apps powered by data from Yahoo Finance and Yahoo’s weather site already come preloaded on iPhones. Some Yahoo data, such as sports stats, help power Apple’s voice-activated ‘assistant’ Siri,” Efrati and Lessin report. “But the companies are discussing new arrangements, including possible deals to get more content from Yahoo News and its other Web properties loaded onto Apple devices or available through an expanded Siri partnership, one of these people said.”

Efrati and Lessin report, “The discussions represent a push by Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer to increase the company’s presence on mobile devices.

A deeper partnership with Apple, which analysts estimate will sell more than 200 million iPhones and iPads this year, could potentially reverse Web traffic declines that Yahoo has seen on some of its sites and help transform the company into a bigger mobile-software player.”

“Apple, meanwhile, has been looking to partner with companies to help reduce its reliance on Google’s mobile services,” Efrati and Lessin report. “Apple’s desire to extract itself from Google runs deep. Apple, which last year ended partnerships with Google over maps and video, has explored breaking up on search for many years and its representatives recently met with companies that have search expertise, people familiar with the matter said.”

      1. I agree. I have always liked Yahoo finance and I occasionally use yahoo messenger. My disappointment is that the yahoo messenger for Mac remains very buggy and inferior to the PC version and does not have feature parity, lacking photoshare. I am barely familiar with Yahoo’s search capabilities, but interestingly, I have just begun using Yahoo search due to my aversion to Google. I have also been using Bing for a few months and find it satisfactory.

    1. Snap out of it. It’s Marissa, not Melissa. At least get the name right, or you’ll forever walk around with a swollen cheek and the red imprint of a hand from the hard slap you’ll be deserving of.

  1. I dislike the Yahoo name very much and never want to be associated with a Yahoo of any kind. At least Google is associated with googolplex as a concept and has some meaning that makes sense but Bing and Yahoo? Complete stupidity.

      1. Paul, how would you have fared in life if your name was ‘Doofas’? Even though you may be very intelligent, you would still have the label that would certainly force you into a low life trade like IT. Although it is not fair, the name we are called brings to mind traits and qualities that may not truly represent us.

  2. There is still time to put together a deal that could be announced at WWDC. Imagine TIm Cook inviting Marissa Mayer onto the stage during the keynote to talk about an Apple-Yahoo partnership on data and news – the crowd goes wild! This fits perfectly with her plan to focus Yahoo on mobile, where it is strong on local info and content. Heck, just the decision to switch from Google to Yahoo as the default search engine for Safari would rob Google of literally hundreds of millions of dollars per year. That, and we get to see more pictures of her on the red ball here on MDN. What’s not to like about that?

    1. I actually believe that could be on the way. It’s conceivable that MM stepped into Yahoo as an acolyte steps from stone to stone in the stream of destiny. Apple could be the next gleaming, moss-encrusted stone for this star-crossed woman, who transcended gender even at Google, the ultimate boys’ clubhouse. Not that there’s anything wrong with boys! Let’s just say that their bizarre science fiction fantasies could stand some tempering.

  3. “Apple’s desire to extract itself from Google runs deep . . . (Apple) has explored breaking up on search for many years”

Using other search services with Siri and taking Google off of Safari’s default search is fine, but Apple needs to keep Google as an option for Safari search. Removing it altogether would be going too far. You still need to offer what your customers want.

    1. Mobile Safari still visits http://google.com quite nicely. And if we’re being honest here, Google should prefer that. When you use the search field in Safari Apple gets a kickback from Google. When you visit the Google site and so your search there, Apple doesn’t get a kickback.
