HTC president calls Samsung’s Galaxy S4 event embarrassing

“As anyone who was on hand at last year’s Galaxy S III unveiling expected, Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 press conference at Radio City Music Hall on Thursday evening was quite the spectacle,” Zach Epstein reports for BGR.

“HTC president Jason MacKenzie was watching the show Thursday night, and he had some choice comments when asked how he felt about the unveiling of his chief rival’s new flagship smartphone,” Epstein reports. “‘I went from laughing to actually feeling embarrassed at some of the acting,’ MacKenzie said in an interview with CNET. ‘Watching the presentation, it looks like they invested a lot in marketing instead of innovation.'”

  1. “Watching the presentation, it looks like they invested a lot in marketing instead of innovation.”

When all you know how to do is shamelessly copy other people’s work that’s all you have left.

  2. They just want to mimic Apple. It’s evident in anything they do. They’d like to have people waiting in their apple-like samsung store, they try to create expectations and rumors about their product.. they’re just pathetic…

      1. Apple, among others. IIRC Canon used eye tracking years ago to improve autofocus performance in some of its cameras, figuring that the user would be looking at whatever was the most likely part of the image to be focused on.

  3. lucky for Samsung, consumers won’t see it, but they should still pull it from YouTube to be on the safe side.

Yes it was that bad, and maybe their success has made them a little lazy, arrogant and complacent. Sound familiar,?

        1. “… about every successful COMPANY.”

Really? Sounded like an off handed bashing of Apple to me. Apparently no one else picked up on it, or on my sarcastic smart-assed remark.

      1. @Rat Patrol

Everything is about Obama? You need some serious therapy. Did you know I bought a new pair of glasses yesterday? OK, I admit, I bought the glasses so I can see better than Obama. I am also having a cup of coffee while I write this, and yes, it’s the same brand that Obama likes to drink. I am also going to watch a movie tonight, and yes, Obama watches movies too, so I guess I can’t fool you, everything I say is about Obama. In fact every Article and comment on MDN is about Obama. The clues are everywhere! Maybe you don’t need therapy after all, because everything IS about Obama!

        1. And housing prices have rebounded 19.7% in the last year here in Ventura County, that Obama is a genius!
He should just simply be granted a third term.
And throw in some more Nobel peace prizes.

        2. He already got one, remember — about 2 months after he was in office, before he had done anything. So he probably needs a Nobel Prize in Physics, or a Pulitzer, or maybe an Oscar, just because he’s Obama.

        3. Yes the guy who has been doing drone strikes and making institutionalized assassinations a household word. That’s they guy who gets the Peace prize. I wonder if the Nobel prize committee feels embarrassed?

I am not bashing Obama, actually for many things I like him, but Peace Prize? He kills people all over the world because their name appears in some secret folder that says they should be killed. The info in that folder can’t possibly be wrong could it? ….and Gitmo, locking people up without a trial. That’s un-America.

In all fairness to Obama, he didn’t ask for this Peace prize. He never promised that he wouldn’t murder people just like all the rest who came before him. The blame falls COMPLETELY on the Nobel committee. Even Obama was shocked to learn he got a peace prize before he did anything to earn it. He was probably in the assassination briefing room when he first heard about winning this prize !

  4. Samsung is an embarrassment to itself, to technology and to holding a candle to the truth.

They employ an army of bloggers to write good things about them and pay off moderators in tech sites like Engadget to delete posts that say negative things about them.

They’re the worst scum on earth who think that money can buy their way to success, stabbing partners in the back along the way.

Google is going to find out the hard way when they get screwed when Samsung drops Android for Tizen after riding them like a banshee on heat to establish a foothold in the mobile market.

  5. What about the HTC “one” Mr president? It also should be your own embarrassment since it looks just like an iPhone 5. Same goes for the RIM “10”. Two phones modelled straight from the iPhone 5.

        1. To be fair, the HTC ONE has the highest resolution screen of any mobile phone. They use their own big pixel/low pixel-count low light camera, their home-screen looks nothing like Samsung’s or Apple’s. Compared to Samsung, they are innovating.
They do not have the advertising budget of a Samsung or Apple, but I still expect it sell well in the android market.

  6. Great move on Jason MacKenzie part. To generate buzz and visibility, make this a fight between Samsung and HTC.

If you start comparing yourself with Apple, no one is going to listen.

  7. Samsung fears doing anything that is actually innovative. Innovating is risky. Let Apple take on the risk. We’ll “pretend” to be innovative and copy anything that is successful…

Fortunately, Apple has all that cash (self-insurance) to mitigate taking a risk on releasing something brand new, such as iPhone, iPad, and whatever is next, about every three years. iPhone 2007, iPad 2010 – Hey, it’s 2013…

Innovation = Risk = Big Reward (if successful)

      1. LOL, you picked a product that was even more of a “hobby” for Apple than Apple TV. But if you want to take it back further, I’ll add…

        iMac – 1998
        iPod – 2001
iTunes (Music) Store – (a bit “early”) 2003

then, iPhone – 2007, iPad – 2010. So something brand new in 2013 is “historically” promising. 🙂

        1. While an important innovation, the click wheel is not a product.

Actually, it was the iTunes Music Store AND the 4th gen iPod (the first one with a click wheel) that exploded the iPod’s popularity. Both were targeted at Windows users, instead of favoring Mac users. Apple even sold a version of that iPod through HP (with an HP logo). And the ever-growing popularity of the iTunes Music Store was directly linked to iPod sales.

That long-term strategizing, instead of not thinking much beyond than the next quarter (and what to copy next), is also part of Apple’s innovation. In order to be successful at taking big risks, Apple plans very carefully for the LONG term.

  8. Besides the shameless copying of design, interface, icons, etc. I just don’t get how people buy a phablet. Cell phones became more convenient. I put my iPhone in my pocket and don’t notice it, whether driving, walking or mountain biking. I just wouldn’t want one of those honking huge things. I wear glasses and have no trouble with my very convenient iPhone.

  9. Dissing the competition publicly has never been Apple’s style. I like that! Win on the merits, not your competitors’ shortcomings! Unless u r Obama and have no merits and rely on rampant voter fraud, demonizing and deception to get elected with the help of the woman in Ohio unapologetically voting 6 times for, u guessed it, Obama! Sorry, couldn’t resist! HTC Guy at least had the guts to speak up!

  10. Watching the presentation, it looks like they invested a lot in marketing instead of innovation.

You’d think ScamStung would have figured out from Microsoft that blowing MILLION$ on marketing sells nothing-at-all if the product sucks. And ShameScum blew a WAD on that shindig!

    Faster ShamSkunk! Spend SPEND! 😆

  11. For those who would like to actually watch the laugh riot SameSong Galaxy S4 presentation at Radio City Music hall on 2013-03-14, you can watch it all on YouTube as linked below. But first you need three things:
    1) Barf Bag for the bad jokes.
    2) Pair of Depends undergarments for peeing your pants with laughter at the gaffs.
    3) You Korea-lish dictionary for translating what the hell Mr. J.K. Shin is trying to say.

Oh and Will Chase: Total star material. One guess as to what former US President he reminds me of.

And now on to the, *gag*, show!

    1. Favorite Gaffs:

4:10 – J.K. Shin, Korean boss guy: And these Apples have taken us to where we are today. – – I don’t think he meant to say ‘Apples’, but he got it right nonetheless.

6:00 – J.K. Shin introduces ‘S Translator’, which uses text to speech and speech to text to communicate between several different languages. If ONLY J.K. Shin had used this feature instead of subjecting us to his broken English.

9:00 – The Galaxy S4 gets ‘unpacked’. (Sounds like an enema). We see it on screen and notice… it’s an iPhone 5 clone. It comes in, surprise, black and white. Oops, I mean ‘Black Mist’ and ‘White Frost’.

13:15 – Ryan Bidan, Samsung marketing guy, is showing off the Galaxy S4 polycarbonate case:
      – Will Chase: The finish and craftsmanship really are something to see and feel. And the kryptonite case
      – Ryan Bidan: Polycarbonate
      – Will Chase: Still cool!

17:30 – Deprived girl in a tutu discovers daddy can’t take pictures of her with a 13 Mpixel camera like the one on the Galaxy S4.
      – Ballet Brat: Are you kidding? Dad, tell me that’s not true!
      – Fallible Father: I’m sorry honey. I’ll get the Galaxy S4 AFTER the presentation!
[This is the point at which an Apple audience would rush the stage and murder the presentation producers. But wait, don’t miss the TAP DANCING…] 😯

      1. The biggest problem with Samsung and its parasitic MO is that no matter how much they try to copy Apple’s products, they crossed the line by trying to ridicule and manipulate the American mindset – HAHAHAHA !!! Idiots!

Americans may be gullible but you can’t ever as a Korean culture get it – Never, it’s American and fundamentally the underlying fabric of our society is fairness and innovation. The American consumer may be restless and fat but and even cheap but at the end of the day Samsung you need to be American to understand the human factor and mindset of American consumerism. You gotta walk the walk because just talking the talk with posture and shies will only conjure up more reminders of the Emperror’s new clothes…

Samesung, you are nakedly exposed to have but a teeeny little weeny! 😳😁🙊🙀😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄

      2. For the first 5 or so minutes I could not tell there was an audience it was so quiet.
Its like JK Shin blew the whole product announcement in the first 10 minutes the rattling off the features. It was done is such a boring and basic way. Also he seemed really awkward on stage.
The delivery boy was so cheesy but thats not his fault.
They seem to announce the features in such a odd way.
The fact they make references to how fake everything this make me think of Samsung itself. Also they never appear to show the actual phone features. They fake the calls too.
This presentation its like a typical Korean style show, presentation or whatever. A lot of visual and audio stimuli but not a lot of substance. How many of the people Besides JK Shin actually work for Samsung?
Thats 50 minutes of my life I want back. It appears whoever put this show together does know its audience or Americans very well. That was just a Cluster.

        1. Yeah, I could use the 50 minutes for better purposes as well.

I think the audience was a bit stunned at the crap quality of the show. That’s not Steve Jobs walking on stage with his arms outstretched. It’s some generic Korean guy no one has ever heard of and no one can understand when he speaks. So he is standing there, acting like ‘OK now folks! It’s time to applaud for me!’ and people are stunned.

There was a smattering of applause in the theatre. You can hear the sound guy turn up the volume of the people out in Times Square, which effectively doubles the applause noise. And yet, it’s still pathetic, as if to say ‘Who the hell is this little generic Chinese, oops I mean Korean guy, pretending he’s Steve Jobs? What the?!’

As for that Will Chase guy, did they just defrost him from 1959? I didn’t want to look him up but I suspect he’s from that broadway show about Elvis and some other early rock and roll phenoms getting together one night to jam, whatever its called. It’s like the guy got imprinted with Jerry Lee Lewis and can’t be real any more. So we get to watch some fake Jerry Lee from 1959 fumble through the show pretending he can sell us stuff in 2013. It’s awful. I bet the Korean marketing guys loved it and thought it was ‘Quite Amelican! Vely vell done! The Amerlicans vill love it!’. Sorry. No. Try again.

  12. I was impressed with how the quality of the Samsung ‘presentation’ of its flagship phone was clearly commensurate with the ‘true value’ of the same said phone. Found Wanting!
