“The US Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of 37 newly granted patents for Apple Inc. today,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.
“The first ten granted patents were covered in our first patent report of the day relating to newly granted design patents,” Purcher reports. “In this report we cover Apple’s granted patents relating to their iOS notification system and others. We close out our report providing you with a list of the remaining granted patents that covers matters such as beacon-based geofencing and more.”
Purcher reports, “Apple has been granted a patent today for their invention relating to the field of mobile device processing; and more specifically, to managing notification service connections of mobile devices and displaying icon badges… Apple credits Chris Marcellino and Justin Santamaria as the inventors of granted patent 8,396,463 which was originally filed in Q1 2012 and published today by the US Patent and Trademark Office.”

What’s the point of securing patents if they’re not protected by the courts?
It is better than the alternative. If Apple fails to pursue patents while others continue to do so, then Apple will be the one on the defensive. While it may be true that Apple has failed to strike a killing blow to Android so far, it is also true that other companies have failed to secure a major win against Apple. In this world, that is a victory of sorts.
The USPTO should send Judge Lucy a copy of these patents to familiarize her with the patent process.
