Forget about next-gen video game consoles from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft – Apple is going to dominate them all

“What I’m about to say is undoubtedly going to piss some of you off,” MG Siegler writes for TechCrunch. “And that’s fine. Because in a few years, I’ll be right and you’ll look silly.”

“While everyone is focused on the next generation video game consoles from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft — the latter two of which should be coming later this year — Apple is going to dominate them all,” Siegler writes. “And it won’t even be that difficult.”

“Anyone who has been following the smartphone space for the past few years knows that Apple has sort of backed into video game dominance by way of their iOS devices. Apple has sold over 500 million of them. These devices have yielded over 40 billion downloads of the over 800,000 apps. And a large portion of those apps are games,” Siegler writes. “Even if you lump together the Xbox 360, the Playstation 3, the Wii, and the Nintendo DS, Apple has still sold about 100 million more iOS devices than all of those systems combined… [and] in a much shorter span.”

Siegler writes, “The rumor that Apple would unveil some sort of Apple TV SDK at an event next month turned out to be bogus (as most things analysts say about Apple prove to be). But that doesn’t mean it’s not coming. In fact, I’d bet on it sooner rather than later.”

    1. I have both too. I am looking to also get the next AppleTV iOS device. The only reason that it is still a “hobby” is because Apple is blocking 3rd party apps for them. With in 1 to 4 months of an SDK for the AppleTV, all other gaming TV boxes will be dead! We need to ask the next question, what is Apple doing that delays this great roadkill event? Perhaps, more billion dollar server farms on every continent. Apple only talked about 2 more. I believe that there are several more that require the fuel cell and solar panel testing that has be done at Carolina farm that doesn’t need them.

  1. The gaming arena is simply one region I’ve never bothered with. But, it does, or did, seem to be inundated with windoze apologists and other species of Apple haters. It’s not an area I’ll be following, but it does seem willing and able, as the cellphone industry was a few years ago, to be unsettled.

  2. yep. I agree with mg. it has been obvious for a while now. but by that’s me token android will be just as big.
Microsoft has been to slow to react with it’s windows phone and left in the dust. We need competition so I will cheer them on too. go mscisobt! yeeeea!

  3. Watching Apple over the last 10 years has been such a guilty pleasure. It’s like watching the high school geek beat the crap out of the bully over and over and over and over and over…

Just think, Apple in the early 90’s … dominating the gaming industry? Lunacy. Just insane. They already own only gaming, and device sales, this would just put a bow on it.

    Amazing.

    1. Throughout the Eighties, the Apple Developer community was the largest pool of talent on the planet before descending into chaos over Macintosh’s introduction; all but a few, i.e., Maxis, Cassady & Greene, and Infocom were able to translate their successes on the Apple ][ to the Mac, while thousands of others faded with the ][e, only to find relief in the burgeoning PC market just a few short years later.

Those of us whose first exposure to Apple was through Apple | and ][ computers have a different perspective about the company who ultimately had to destroy a very successful platform to affect the genesis of Macintosh; the future of Apple.

Ever since then, Apple has zigged and zagged, leaving in its wake thousands of disillusioned developers who were subjected to a number of major transitions to software and hardware designs.

Every time Apple builds up a talent pool of developers, they change something in dramatic fashion, like chipset makers or security policies and procedures that impact my user experience by an order of magnitude.

This is why iPad is undermining Macintosh; there are no sweeping changes to the platform every 18-months and a lion’s share of the software is backward compatible with the original iPad, so developers are flocking in waves for the purpose of tapping into the untold riches of in-game purchasing power.

Wait for Apple to flip the switch and turn every TV into a wireless HD gaming console and watch as Microsoft’s Ballmer will be sucking wind like a weasel sucking eggs. He should be stepping down soon.

  4. I can’t wait for the first person to sue Apple because they sent their iPhone sailing through their big screen TV while playing video tennis through the iPhone and AppleTV.

  5. Siegler writes, “The rumor that Apple would unveil some sort of Apple TV SDK at an event next month turned out to be bogus (as most things analysts say about Apple prove to be).

    1. While I’ve never been into joystick-controlled games that are being discussed, I am glad for those who are and who will reap the rewards of Apple advances into this market.

I personally prefer the “Hidden Object” games that you see so much of these days. I just can’t afford them all. Great graphics in many of them.

Anyone recall Wizardry? A 3rd party dev put out an add-on that let us average non-programmer types to create our own Wizardry scenarios. I used to be in a group that had a monthly scenario exchange. Great but what a time-eater.

Then there was another add-on that let you edit your characters, giving them ultimate powers and weapons so you could storm your way through each level. You could turn evil characters good, or vice versa, which was one way to beat the system.

Those were the days, my friends.

  6. HOW TO RULE THE WORLD
Step 1: Apple comes out with a Retina TV with a powerful app store, fairly priced channel packages, and first rate processor.
Step 2: There is no step two.

  7. Those who have vision will laugh at how cheap Apple WAS in the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future. You are interested in the Apple unknown… the mysterious. The unexplainable. That is why you are here.

And now, for the first time, we are bringing to you, the full story of what happened on those fateful days. We are bringing you all the evidence, based only on the secret testimony, of the miserable consumer user souls, who survived this terrifying ordeal at the hands of Steve Ballmer, Eric Schmidt, Larry Page & Lee Kun Hee . The incidents, the places. My friend, we cannot keep this a secret any longer.

Let us punish the Microsoft, Google & Samsung guilty. Let us reward the Apple innocent. My friend, can your heart stand the shocking facts of superior technology and subsequent market & profit share takers from Cupertino, CA?!!!!!

    1. “You are interested in the Apple unknown… the mysterious. The unexplainable. That is why you are here.”

Wait, I can’t stop laughing… my vision has been clouded by tears for what has to be the funniest looking blood stain ever. Like Rorschach without symmetry, you play a zero-sum game of winner take all at the expense of everyone else.

  8. In order to do this Apple need to make a serious game dedicated hardware console and with good controllers and a touch of longevity. Not a device with a yearly hardware refresh such as my crappy little ATV3 with an iOS gaming SDK. And not relying on iOS device as a controller. Ugh !
That would still be successful but the experience won’t be the same cutting edge game oriented hardware. It would be fine for casual gamers but not for those who fuel the billlion dollar record setting console sales of COD each year.
I’m a serious gamer and have paid for games on my iPad. I never touch them, I always game on my XBOX. The experience is so much better.

    1. “I’m a serious gamer and have paid for games on my iPad.”

Yeah because only serious gamers pay for games, whereas the half-hearted steal games.

Your first mistake as a “serious” gamer was buying an iPad and TV to play COD. Did you really think the iPad or TV could reproduce the gaming experience of a console? Of course you didn’t, you bought them because you wanted them.

That was before you realized that unless you Jailbreak them, you’ll have to pay for everything.

The XBox experience is so much better because its a dedicated gaming machine, but let’s be clear, your XBox is shit compared to a custom gaming box. So don’t come in here bashing Apple because you can’t afford to buy a real game box.

  9. If any of you honestly think apple can “dominate” the gaming industry then you all have your heads in the sand. The core of the gaming industry are PC/Android users. They are the kids that like many options and customization and could give to sh its about ease of use. Apple will make a game console and it will fail miserably. It will be a great product for casual smartphone like games but real 3d 200 hours + gameplay type games? No chance
