Why Apple should hang-up on the iPhone, iWear is next

“Aside from some end-of-year tax selling and concerns regarding the fiscal cliff, shares of Apple took a brutal beating towards the end of 2012,” Richard Saintvilus writes for Forbes. “The reason – there is a broad belief that the company no longer knows how to innovate. But it’s not true. Instead, what has hurt Apple has been the complete opposite.”

“The company’s 6-month refresh cycle and avalanche of products seems to have backfired – allowing rivals such as Google and Samsung to steal market share,” Saintvilus writes. “Apple’s ‘misdirection’ with its disappointing map app didn’t help the situation either. For this, CEO Tim Cook offered an apology.”

Saintvilus writes, “Consequently, Apple now finds itself in an unfamiliar territory – having to prove itself… For the company to truly move forward as a tech power, Apple should hang-up on the iPhone after one more iteration – presumably the iPhone 6. You might disagree. Granted, the phone is still selling well. However, aside from a different chip and larger screen, the change from the 4S to iPhone 5 was not that significant.”

MacDailyNews Take: Obviously, he’s never really used an iPhone 5. As Day One users of every iPhone ever made, the difference between the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 is stark. Besides the larger screen and faster performance, the iPhone 5 is markedly thinner, ridiculously lighter, and its build-quality is extremely high with very tight tolerances. The 4S is a brick-like tank vs. the svelte, lightweight iPhone 5.

Saintvilus writes, “Instead, Apple needs to focus on its TV ambitions… The company should start focusing on ways to dominate the smarthome and the smartcar… Also, for quite some time, the company has hinted on wearable technology. “It’s time” for the iWatch or its iWear line of devices.”

  1. Richard Saintvilus? Who or what are you? You make imbicilic comments based on ignorance so why should your comment matter? Richard, just hang about a little longer, sit back, watch the innovation evolve before your very eyes, enjoy the experience and buy more Apple Stock while you can still afford it. Now, do you feel any better?

    1. Idiotic too as in Android phones, with the exception of larger screens, have no reason to continue either under this logic. Nothing really all that new in the hardware so let’s stop making them? It’s the same smart phone functionality that needs to be maintained from model to model and that’s like saying we’re all done with basic car design, time to get away from that and build barns instead. Say wha? We should stop making something that works under certain design configurations just because it’s relative old hat and doesn’t give us that sense of awe anymore? Give up billions of dollars making phones and all the money from the ecosystem and just concentrate on the latest tech flavor of the week iTV’s? This is about as retarded an analysis as a human can make.

  2. “Apple now finds itself in an unfamiliar territory – having to prove itself…”

Anyone with any knowledge of Apple’s past knows Apple has always had to prove itself. Apple’s mission is clear – make insanely great products – and the rest (sales and profit) is easy. We’ll have to wait and see the next earnings report if customers are tired of Apple products.

  3. I’m not really a businessperson or financial expert, but Apple should drastically revamp their business strategy because of . . . stock price gyrations? I always thought the true measure of a company’s success was profitability rather than anything else.

  4. A click-piece plain and simple.
Write something stupid so people will click on it and link to it.
Forbes benefits but Saintvilus’ reputation tanks. But if Saintvilus doesn’t care everybody winds, except Forbes readers.

  5. It’s the comment section that is hilarious. The author engages with nearly every comment, ah but says. “But one thing that I won’t do is answer every question that is posed to me by those that disagree with my articles. I just don’t care enough.”

He’s got the great makings on an analysts.

  6. Think about this fuck chop. Apple should stop making large screen portable devices and just make tiny screened wrist watches where people have to flex their bicep and hold their forearm 5″ from their face to see the screen. Anyone over 5′ will have trouble touching the tiny interface because the fingers are too big. And forget video or anything like that because of how small the screen is.

This is a huge problem in search of a solution that is already there: smartphones.

Apple will enter into wearable tech in the form of augmented glasses or human/integrated computers.

This guy is an idiot. It’s sad that people like us and Bloggers know so much more about the industry than the big news sources who now just link whore. Talk about a complete erosion of journalism and the information age.

  7. Writer doesn’t know much about the history of Apple.

It starts with a superior new, better form of product and sticks with it getting better each time and eventually starts to make variations in size.

Apple figured this out a long time ago and none of us Apple users would be surprised to find a smaller phone down the line. It would probably be able to be linked with a variety of earpieces or wrist devices that would let us keep the watch in our pocket or briefcase.

  8. What an enabler of stupidity.

First, anyone who thinks the stock market is a reflection of reality does not understand how it is controlled by big money.

Second, betting against a technology company with a true vision – products for the customer with the customer in mind – does not understand how real markets work.

  9. Hang up the iPhone? Why? Because this particular upgrade was not as significant as we hoped?

Apple still has a good chance to get back on ts feet. All these Andoid vs IOS arguments is bullshit. You won’t get either side to admit that the other is better. Android fans are usually pro-functionality. Likewise, Apple fans are pro-simplicity. You would never get someone who enjoys simplicity to say Android is the best. And you won’t get someone who favors functionality and deep customization to say iOS is the best. They have different needs. Jail breaking and rooting are options but others would rather not do that.

(Note: Jailbreaking and rooting are the same thi g under two different names. The bottom line is you are trying to gain access to the phone’s root or file system in order to make changes. Just need to point tat out because I have ran into folks who argue that rooting is for customization and Jailbreaking is for getting basic android functionality on iOS. BULLSHIT)

Back to my point. Why would you quit on a market that you still have a chance to succeed in? It’s okey to expand and focus on other lines. But don’t forget about that market.

  10. Apple should only have the iPod Touch & iPod Nano. Kill iPod Classic. iPod Shuffle should become the TimePod watch type device or maybe a larger arm cuff smart device.

  11. We are only making tens of billions of dollars with the iPhone, and others have copied it. We should trash it and follow the guidance of the wise journalists and analysts whose insight led to the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Store…NOT.

This article is a joke. I don’t know why I even jumped on the bandwagon. Everyone above trashed the author sufficiently. Why do people get paid to write such complete drivel?

  12. Wearable (Watch) tech will only be any good if it’s good as a watch without connecting to a phone or something else. It needs to be something you would wear on its own if it just told the time. Most of the things I’ve seen so far are huge great things that basically tell you if you’ve been tweeted!

I have a simple watch that tells the time, has a stopwatch, countdown timer, and alarms. I use all those functions regularly because glancing at my watch on however regular basis is far easier than getting my phone in and out of my pocket (especially on the move). I regularly use a gps app on my phone when walking to track my route, distance, speed, etc, so it would be great to have that basic information on my watch and tied in to the existing functionality.

I don’t need to be staring at my watch for extended periods, but I glance at it, any smart functions will be best when augmenting features on my phone in instances when I don’t need to interact.
