Analyst slaps $400 price target, ‘Sell’ rating on Apple; claims ‘cycle of vogue’ ending

“Per Lindberg of Oslo, Norway-based investment bank ABGSC Sundal Collier yesterday published a rare thing: an initiation of coverage of Apple (AAPL) with a Sell rating and a $400 price target,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s.

“Writes Lindberg in his lengthy report (102 pages), Apple’s products ‘are no longer unique,’ phone companies are looking for alternatives, and customers are ‘suffering from ‘fashion fatigue,”” Ray reports. “‘For all its commercial success, marketing prowess and brand image, Apple is bound to enter a phase of much stiffer competition, far tougher comparisons, and, materially less generous operator subsidies,’ writes Lindberg.”

Ray reports, “Amidst a raft of problems — including ‘Microsoft getting its act back together with Windows 8’ — Lindberg sees substantially lower revenue and earnings per share in coming years versus consensus.”

MacDailyNews Take: Dude oughta analyze his own mental state — or at least a Windows 8 review.

  1. BEFORE I START, I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I THINK APPLE MAKES FANTASTIC PRODUCTS AND NO, I’M NOT AN ANDROID FANBOY OR A TROLL. AND I KNOW I’M GONNA GET BLASTED BY SAYING THIS, BUT I AGREE WITH THE ARTICLE IN SOME WAYS. I’LL EXPLAIN WHAT I FEEL: TAKE iOS OUT OF THE iPHONE 5 AND PUT ANDROID IN ITS PLACE. WOULD THIS “ANDROID” PHONE BE AS POPULAR AS THE OTHER PREMIUM ANDROID PHONES? DO YOU THINK THE HARDWARE OUTSHINES THOSE OF OTHER PREMIUM ANDROID PHONES? WHAT IF YOU PUT iOS ON A PREMIUM ANDROID PHONE, LIKE THE SAMSUNG GALAXY S3. WHICH iOS PHONE DO YOU THINK MOST PEOPLE WOULD BUY, THE IPHONE 5 OR THE SAMSUNG IPHONE?

I THINK WHAT THE AUTHER IS TRYING TO SAY IS SINCE THE IPHONE MAKES UP ROUGHLY 50% OF APPLES ENTIRE REVENUE, IT’S KIND OF SCARY TIMES SINCE THE HARDWARE ISN’T MUCH BETTER THAT THE COMPETITION RIGHT NOW, AND THE OPERATING SYSTEM IS GETTING A BIT STALE (A GRID OF ICONS) AND ANDROIDS OPERATING SYSTEM IS CATCHING UP.

I HATE TO SAY THIS, BUT RIGHT NOW THE IPHONES “HYPE” SEEMS TO BE GREATER THAN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ITS HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE, AND IT’S COMPETITORS. IT’S NOT CHEAPER THAN PREMIUM ANDROID PHONES, NOT MUCH MORE CAPABLE THAN ANDROID PHONES. I THINK THAT’S WHAT THE AUTHER IS TRYING TO SAY. MANY PEOPLE ARE REPEAT BUYERS OF IPHONES, BUT SOME OF THESE PEOPLE MIGHT BE GETTING TIRED OF IT. NOT EVERYONE IS SO DIE-HARD. SOMETIMES, WE TRADE IN A PERFECTLY GOOD CAR JUST BECAUSE WE WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO DRIVE. IT’S HUMAN NATURE.

PLEASE, BE GENTILE. I’M NOT AN APPLE HATER.

    anal-ysts!

like most market anals, they just do not get it.

apple defies gravity, recession, norms, standards…
it is not a product but Gestalt/Zeitgeist co. with soul, which reaches parts others never will…
