iPhone 5 pre-orders sell out in one hour, 22 times faster than iPhone 4S, further spotlighting Apple’s dominance

“Preoders for the iPhone 5 went live at midnight tonight and, true to form, they went like hotcakes,” Billy Gallagher reports for TechCrunch.

“You may remember that it took 22 hours for the iPhone 4S and about 20 hours for the iPhone 4 to sell out of its pre-order, launch-day stock,” Gallagher reports. “The iPhone 5 took just about 60 minutes.”

Gallagher reports, “Yep. One hour after pre-orders went live tonight, Apple.com shifted shipping expectations from one to two weeks due to the overwhelming demand.”

    1. I was ordering two phones from the Apple Store. Got the screen that said you can’t order two phones at once and so got mine and then went to order my wife’s and that’s when Time Warner decided to shut down all my digital services for about a half hour! God I was pissed it took that moment to do that! By the time I got back on the shipping times hasd changed. I want to tar and feather everyone down at the Time Warner office! (I know, need to get a life but BOY, how aggravating.)

        1. I know I thought about that too. Hee. But seeing as how things were going very smoothly I didn’t think it a problem about the actual order of the devices bought. If I hadn’t made the mistake of ordering both at once I probably would have made it under the wire. I am probably going to have to wait until her phone arrives anyway to activate them both at the same time being part of the Verizon SHARE EVERYTHING family plan or whatever they call it. We are switching from AT&T since our area SUCKS for AT&T and can’t wait. We gave them 25 years to make it right. I figure that’s enough. Bah bye AT&T! We knew ye all too well!

        1. Hey, we used to have Time Warner here but they sold out to DumbHouse. Things actually degraded when that happened. Thank goodness AT&T came along with Uverse. Now no one could pay me enough to go back to cable.

  1. Although we don’t yet know if Apple had the same amount of iPhones on-hand as last year for the preorder. Maybe they had 22 times less iPhones available for preorder? I doubt it, but I’m just saying that we need to wait until Apple officially releases its preorder numbers to know EXACTLY how well the iPhone 5 sold today!

    1. Presumably, it’s the other way around, as Apple’s launch schedule implies a far faster production ramp up than before. Plus, we know from Apple’s cap expenditures estimate in the 10K, that Apple is prepping for roughly double the production, so for pre-sale inventory to be less is hard to believe.

As for waiting for Apple to officially announce pre-orders, don’t expect it. They may announce launch weekend numbers, but that’s about it.

    1. Everyone who ordered one put your hand up and I’ll count!

We won’t find out until Apple releases the first weekend figures. This will include all preorders plus sales at the stores.

  2. I’m as big a fan as the next, and in fact, was able to pre-order mine with the initial rush. That being said, you have to take this a little tongue-in-cheek without knowing what their inventory backlog looked like compared to previous releases. I am sure they did due diligence to make as many available at launch as possible, but this headline means nothing without knowing the backlog chewed through in an hour.

    1. Agree. Comments like the one MDN put out are often times subjective at best. How many were available as there is reason to believe that Apple has to deal with supply chain issues and in particular with Sharp and LG who are providing the displays. How many are being sold to existing iPhone users which is what Apple really cares about as their goal is to sell to new iPhone users as while selling to the converted is good business, selling to new users is even better business.

I am in Canada, and submitted my order for a white 16 and a slate 64 at 5:43 AM eastern time without any glitch.

Not sure anyone ever doubted existing iPhone user’s appetite for the iPhone 5, but the question was will it track well in terms of take away from Android and Windows Phone.

    1. I’m pretty sure the gates opened for everyone at the same time. It may not have been midnight for you cuz of time zones, but it was when everyone else ordered. 12am pacific, 3am eastern etc…

        1. I got cha. Yea 3 hours of sleep. Everything’s going over my head. Least you got a iPhone outta the deal. Can’t beat 6 g’s. Now you’d really be lucky if you get to stay on vacation till the day before the 21st. No worries all week then get to come home to look forward to the ip5. Living the life.

  3. I fought with ATTs web site for 30 minutes. It finally took the order at 4:30 am using Chrome. Meanwhile, Safari was showing ATTs banner splash screen saying something like waiting for the big event. The only time I was thankful for having Chrome on my Macbook Pro! haha. Coworker said no waiting on Verizon web site when he ordered. I guess all us ATT people threaten, but don’t really switch.

        1. Both of those are hard to beat in my eyes but my Verizon friends usually have something that will meet or triumph it…… Well maybe not anymore. Haven’t had a ” failed call” in quite awhile. AT&T was notorious for that for awhile around here.

    1. Apple’s site was doing the same thing with Safari and Firefox to me, finally downloaded Opera and was able to pre-order in the first bunch… quite annoying that certain browsers worked over others.

    1. Inexcusable miscalculation? Really? Should they have waited until they had 30 million devices boxed up and ready to roll? How long would that have delayed the release (and kept the iPhone out of EVERYONE’S hands)? The day they don’t rapidly sell out of their initial iPhone release will mark the end of their dominance in mindshare.

  4. Start my ordering at 2:58 am eastern time. Took two attempts, but had a confirm emails for the order at 3:06 am. I can not wait till next Friday. I could not go back to sleep after getting so early this morning, now I tired as hell at work, thank God it’s friday.

  5. Preorders for Verizon Corporate Customers started at 6AM CST, so I got up at 5:30, order my wife’s iPhone 5 with no problem and then ordered 5 for our company at 6AM.

If you haven’t ordered yet, try ordering directly from your carrier as my order placed 2:45 after the pre-orders started will still be delivered by the 21st.

  6. Well due to FedEx being incompetent A-holes, AT&T not allowing me to ship to anywhere outside my billing address.. I’m forced to do the order from the App and wait till apple tells me it’s ready in store.

I had to resort to using the Apple Store app… Safari/Firefox wasn’t being allowed in to either Apple or AT&T’s sites. AT&T gave errors, Apple was probably throttling access. The App worked flawlessly.. except the shipping part, so I had to abort the order.

Not being able to have the iPhone ship to the store is stupid Apple/AT&T… people WORK… homes are vacant during business hours. and FedEx will not wait till later in the evening to deliver/redeliver when someone IS home.. Sorry i haven’t been able to train my dog to sign for packages yet.
and with delivery on a friday.. that means I’d have to wait till monday the 24th to get the iPhone, and i’d have to drive across town to the FedEx hub to get it.. Oh and they close the same time I get off work…
Not allowing the shipping address to be changed is total BS. I know that was AT&T not Apple though.

When I ordered my iPad 2, and iPad 3 the option to pick up in store was available but not for the iPhone.

    1. You wanted FedEx to ship your phone to the apple store? Like, you wanted a hundred apple retail employees to all be on the lookout for you and be aware of where your phone was being specially kept for you? On their busiest day of the year? They are all serialized. They can’t just substitute another. And your phone would arrive as a separate shipment from their palletized freight. I know you were probably not thinking clearly because of lack of sleep, so I hope in the cold light of day you see that request would be insane.

If you were talking about not being able to reserve the phone for in store pickup, that’s got nothing whatsoever to do with FedEx.

For future reference, when you get the email that your package has shipped, there is a link to print out an authorization to pre-sign for your package.

      1. no… to my WORK… like everyone else i order from. an additional shipping address is always an option… except from AT&T.

and if you actually read my post, I HAVE DONE THIS IN THE PAST with the iPad.

FedEx drives past my house and claims “attempted” when they are behind. I’ve watched them do it, twice. I have a security cam that caught the bastard doing it, FedEx didn’t care.
I wanted pickup in Apple store, pickup in AT&T store, or ship to a secondary address.

yeah, lets pre sign for an iPhone… and leave it on my porch. yeah, for a thief to grab.

        think think this one through:
we know that FedEx is the only shipper of iPhones.
We know the date FedEx delivers the iPhones.
we follow a random FedEx vehicle on Friday.
We watch FedEx drop off a package roughly the size of an iPhone box without a signature… and wait to see if anyone opens the door.
        nobody does…

        Free iPhone 5 to sell.

I deal with Law Enforcement all the time, both local and Federal, The scenario I noted above… was what happened last year with the 4S locally. dozens of people had their brand new iPhones stolen cause they allowed delivery without an actual exchange. I’m a Local Police Department Citizen Police academy graduate due to my interaction with LE. I get the behind the scenes stories like this all the time.
We have a large Russian “gang” here that is huge with theft, mainly vehicles but they do everything.

if you want to randomly pre-sign for a package, you can. if you want to pre-sign for a major event launch that EVERYONE knows when it will be delivered… you are a F’n idiot.

        1. Ah, being shipped to your work is a different story. I was going by this line in the original post: “Not being able to have the iPhone ship to the store is stupid Apple/AT&T…”

And you are right to be aware of your individual situation regarding the pre-sign stuff. For me it works well, but I live in small town America. In the last 10 years on my street there has been one theft. (My wife’s purse was stolen.) The thief was arrested later the same day. I appreciate that not everyone lives in that sort of community, but I do so the pre-sign works for me. The trade off in living here is in not having anything to do after 6 pm because the town shuts down.

You might want to check with apple/FedEx about having it dropped off to your nearest FedEx hub. I’ve done that before with success.

          Cheers

        2. yeah the “ship to store” part was just yet another part of the full rant lol.
And AT&T used to do the ship to store.. for whatever reason in the past year or so they quit. I had iPhones, cases, screens, my bluetooth… all shipped to the store. starting with the 4S they quit.

The problem with the hold at the hub part.. I get off work the same time they close, so thats out.

UPS/USPS I have never had issues with. I live 3 miles from work, my UPS driver at home… is also the same driver at work. All I have to do is ask and he just drops packages off at work instead of home. FedEx.. will not, until after they attempt once at the original address.
USPS, I know my carrier also. I kinda have a standing order to just leave big packages or stuff that needs a signature at the PO and call/text me and I grab it. Saves us both time and hassle.

FedEx is just the worst to deal with for me anyway.

        3. Settle down there, fella. If you read your original post, you would see you wrote this: “Not being able to have the iPhone ship to the *store* is stupid Apple/AT&T… people WORK…” (emphasis added)

        4. and this is NOT my only post i have made on the shipping BS topic.
its just the one he responded to…

oh, and you skipped the “AT&T not allowing me to ship to anywhere outside my billing address..” part. which was also part of my bigger rant on the subject. I mention ship to store as the second part…

there are other posts where I mentioned the shipping address not able to be changed, not just ship to store.

    2. I seen the option just couldn’t click on it. Guessing they’re expecting big enough lines. Does suck. I’ll be wasting a vacation day on waiting around Friday. Last vacation day off the year to. F it. I’m determined. 3 day weekend coming up.

      1. yeah i can’t take time off whenever i want.. or I would have done that.
I saw the option grayed out also, also the edit shipping address was grayed out.

HATE that Apple uses FedEx exclusively.
I’ll just have to wait till next friday and order the iPhone. when it’s actually released, that option for store pickup should be allowed. it will be another 2-3 weeks before I get it.. but I won’t have to deal with FedEx.

I am planning on stopping by the AT&T store in a few hours, If they will let me change the shipping address in store.. I’ll order today and wait.

I checked Twitter… People bashing AT&T for the iPhone 5 pre-order… was trending worldwide in the top 5. lol
so obviously i’m not the only one.

    3. ok…

Walked into AT&T store, I was not the only one nor the first to complain about the shipping issue.

iPhone 5 64gb black ordered and will be shipped to AT&T store 😉
Granted I will be waiting another week or so.. But my issue with FedEx is neutralized.

Bitch and you will get your way lol.

  7. I ordered 2 which was a bit harder than I thought…
They made me take one out of my cart (one carrier activation purchase at a time).
My debit card got froze because the order looked bizarre 😛
FYI I don’t think anyone could have a 30 pin Adapter on launch day, I checked first thing and they said ‘Shipping October’.

  8. Bit of a struggle for me (beyond staying up ’til midnight PDT), as I couldn’t get the order page to offer me a “check out” button. After I disabled Safari extensions it worked fine, and now I don’t really care which extension was to blame. Just waiting for my black 64 GB jewel to arrive on Friday.

  9. I got my two iPhone 5 (black and white 64 GB) but I have 2 week delivery. It was about 5:30 AM in Alaska when I pulled the trigger.

Could not do it earlier because I am on a cruise ship going to Ketchican and I had no Internet connection on my iPhone until then.

I am happy and now I can get back to sleep.

  10. HOLY CRAP! I just looked at the stock price!! KaChing! GO APPLE!!!
If I wasn’t such a Scrooge, it would be tempting to sell one share when it hits $700 and get myself an iPad to celebrate. Maybe I’ll wait for the $1,000 mark.

  11. Anyone else place their order within the first hour, receive a confirmation email that the order is processing, and still not have received a confirmation email that the order has been processed? Placed my order at 3:35a (started the process at 3;01a, but had to go get all sorts of ATT account info in order to process my switch to Verizon); stil, waiting on confirmation that order is processed.
