Apple kicks Google’s Android in the teeth; $1.05 billion jury award may really be worth $450 billion

“Nine jurors in the Federal Court of the Northern District of Southern California handed Apple a big victory against Samsung on Friday evening,” Nigam Arora writes for Forbes. “The jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages, found all seven of Apple’s patents valid, found Samsung infringed six of Apple’s patents, and found Apple not to have infringed on any of Samsung’s five patents.”

“This verdict kicks Google’s Android in the teeth. The result will be higher costs for phone manufacturers who use Google Android and some slowdown in the rapid expansion of Android Juggernaut,” Arora writes. “I estimate that slowing down Android juggernaut is worth $150 billion to $200 billion to Apple over the next 10 years.”

Arora writes, “Our estimate is that the strengthening of Apple’s brand image is worth about $100 billion over the next 10 years… The verdict will make it more difficult for competitors to copy the look and feel of Apple products. The result will be more aspirational buyers stretching farther to buy Apple products. My estimate is this aspect will contribute about $150 billion to Apple’s sales over the next 10 years.”

    1. My 401k payback is a rising AAPL stock 🙂
It ain’t too late to buy MacFans ala AppleHeads!

AAPL = $1077 before 2015 starts!!!! Great news for Apple, Inc. & me 🙂 You????

  1. All Pie in the Sky! Let see where all of this ends up as Apple cannot take on everyone and think it can win. Not sure Android gets hurt by this one tiny bit as most folks do not care about this kind of stuff when they are buying a phone or tablet at Wal-Mart.

    1. “Apple cannot take on everyone and think it can win.”

shall I whisper one shining example when apple just did that… ?
      …….. iiiiiiiiii iPOD !!!

(iPod beat Sony, Toshiba, iRiver, Creative Nomad, Phillips, Saehan, Archos, Samsung, Cowon, Msft Zune, Sandisk, etc etc. Note that companies like Sony were huge, had extensive audio manufacturing – sony sold tens of millions of Walkman every year and STILL got beat by by an apple which in those days was much much smaller than it is now. )

      lol.

“most folks do not care about this kind of stuff when they are buying a phone or tablet at Wal-Mart.”

mobile devices that don’t look like Apple products don’t sell unless you practically give them away for no profit. Apple takes 75% of worlds cell phone profits, Samsung which copies apple closest takes about 10% and all the millions eke out the rest. HTC sales are falling, Motorola has lost money 14 out of the last 16 quarters. Win Phone which doesn’t look like iOS has 2% market share, BB, symbian has dropped off the cliff.

      IOS has won big.

  2. Let me just say… This part of the article just brings a smile to my face 😉

“The jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages, found all seven of Apple’s patents valid, found Samsung infringed six of Apple’s patents, and found Apple not to have infringed on any of Samsung’s five patents.”

I may have to print that out and hand it to my android loser co-workers lol

  3. The problem with this verdict is that it gives patent trolls all the incentive to continue filing lawsuit after lawsuit and Apple will be on the losing end of some of them. I get the need to protect a companies intellectual property, but consumers foot the bill for all of the suits – warranted or not.

  4. I’m not so sure. Samsung now has their name to be mentioned in the same conversation with Apple. Whenever anyone is thinking iPhone, they now have awakened others to Samsung.
Sure, it cost them a billion or more, which is a stiff kick to the chops, but now customers considering iPhones will likely think of Samsung as the most viable competitor. It sure isn’t Nokia, RIM, or Microsoft.
Customer’s don’t care who copied who, only the courts and the companies do.

    1. What you forget is, Apple will request Samsung remove those 6 technology patents from their products. That will turn Samsung products into miserable pieces of shit unless Samsung actually innovates.

Consumer mind share will also take grave note of the visible features Samsung will not be able to reproduce (aka steal) such as: Pinch to zoom, bounceback and the iPhone’s home screen GUI.

Consumers care about getting satisfaction, ease of use, a top notch user interface, a non-fragmented app ecosystem and a huge selection of third party hardware / attachments. Apple alone provides all of this in abundance.

      1. What YOU forget is, Samsung has the option to license these patents from Apple, just as all the other manufactures can/do. Apple gave them every chance to before the trial, and Samsung stuipdly declined.

Apple may not give them that option any more, but I think they will.

        1. What you forget is, Apple has made it plainly clear that they want other companies to create their own stuff.

          Repeat after me, readymade524:

“Samsung should make their own stuff.
Samsung should make their own stuff.
Samsung should make their own stuff.”

OK. Doing that brief exercise was for memory retention so we don’t have to hear more drivel comments. Print this out for future reference.

  5. I’d never consider another phone, especially a slamsung phone, why would I want to reward a company that slavishly copies? I’d rather get the genuine thing. Let others have the cheap imitations.

  6. Yes, one only need look at the iPod to know that Apple can diversify the iPhone (and iPad) lineups to reach an ever bigger market. Just like the iPod started out with one model and then offered various form factors over time, so will the iPhone. Imagine an iPhone on your wrist, or as a hearing-aid like device.

  7. isn’t that a prime example of playing fast and loose with numbers…

The sad reality is that Google still is sitting on piles of cash and a near-monopoly on the advertising messages with which internet users are flooded. Teaming with the endless number of asian copycats will ensure that the big G will continue to undercut Apple prices and, yes, outsell iPhones for the foreseeable future. Apple has the App store, but no matter, Google has an ace up its sleeve:

And a small but influential group of people (IT executives) have a vested interest in making sure that cheaper, less reliable products are sold to the masses or issued to corporate lackeys. While Apple executives are doing everything they can to make the iTunes App store consumer-friendly they inexplicably are doing almost nothing whatsoever to endear themselves to corporate markets. Apparently Apple has already written that market segment off. And Google will take it away from Blackberry and MS in the long run because the evil company has no scruples and relatively less bloat than fat, slow MS.

  8. Some idiot at Forbes wrote: The verdict will make it more difficult for competitors to copy the look and feel of Apple products.

No shit, Sherlock; isn’t that basically the idea of the lawsuit? How about if we all just began copying and selling whatever Forbes prints?

The result will be more aspirational buyers stretching farther to buy Apple products.

No, you stupid twit. The result will be that outfits who want to sell smartphones now have to hire great R&D people to design and innovate and produce products that people want to buy. They need to out-Apple Apple.
