Apple v. Samsung: When will the jury deliver a verdict?

“I’ve served my share of jury duty on cases ranging from personal injury to homicide, but I’ve never sat on a case as long or complicated as Apple’s multi-billion dollar patent infringement suit against Samsung,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

“So I asked several expert jury watchers to speculate about what the seven men and two women in the jury room are doing right now, and when we might expect them to deliver a verdict,” P.E.D. reports. “The jurors have probably already selected a foreperson, says Christopher Carani, a design law expert at Chicago-based McAndrews, Held & Malloy, but they still have a long way to go. ‘While the weekend is fast approaching and jurors are likely exhausted, I’d be very surprised if we received a jury verdict tomorrow. The task at hand is a massive one — there are 773 discreet questions, each requiring consideration of several pieces of information, including patents, accused products, prior art, etc. Just to locate the proper information will take a yeoman’s effort.'”

  1. Of all the jobs the USofA holds up as important, jury duty, at ?$15/day? has to be one of the most important jobs as defining and upholding our concept of a law abiding society.

And you thought teachers were underpaid!

    1. Teachers aren’t underpaid, they work nine months of the year, from 9am to 4pm max, are off for every holiday plus fall break, winter break and St. Bureaucrats Day, have an incredible insurance and retirement plan that a working person could only dream of putting in their 50 hours a week. F the underpaid teachers bullshit. And F the NEA.

      1. What an absolutely asinine thing to say. Did you think of it yourself or did you scrape that dung off the wall after Rush Limbaugh spat it out?

Teachers don’t work nine months out of the year. When students aren’t in school, they’re busy taking classes themselves, getting recertified, and getting everything set for the new year. Cutting funding to education means many teachers now have to spend their own money to stock up the classroom with needed supplies. And the insurance thing is an absolute myth. My wife had some of the worst insurance we had ever had back when she was teaching, so we stayed on my health plan instead, which was far cheaper and gave far better benefits.

Teachers also don’t just work fifty hours a week. They’re in two hours before students arrive and often stay three or four hours after the school day ends setting up for the next day, going to meetings, and doing lesson plans. And that doesn’t include the stacks of paperwork they often bring home to grade before finally going to bed.

Take your head out of your ass and stop spewing garbage you obviously know absolutely nothing about.

        1. According to PayScale, teacher salary varies by position. As the April 2010, elementary school teachers average $40,322 annually; middle school teachers get $42,025 and high school teachers receive $43,091. Special education teachers in preschool through elementary make $41,145; in middle school, they earn $42,815 and in high school, they make $44,044.

        2. “When students aren’t in school, they’re busy taking classes themselves, getting recertified, and getting everything set for the new year.”

lol, you’re a funny guy. I especially like “getting everything set for the new year.”

        3. “they’re busy taking classes” – paid for by the taxpayer.

“getting rectified.” – write a check.

“getting everything set for the new year” – unlock classroom door, do a roll call of students present.

I always like to ask the city trashman in May, where he is going on his summer vacation. He laughs and shoots me the finger.

        4. “And the insurance thing is an absolute myth. My wife had some of the worst insurance we had ever had back when she was teaching, so we stayed on my health plan instead, which was far cheaper and gave far better benefits.”

          lol, STFU:

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index asks 1,000 American adults each day about their healthcare coverage and reports monthly, quarterly, and annual averages. The monthly percentage of uninsured adults increased to 17.7% in December 2011, tying July for the highest on record. The uninsured rate was 17% or higher in most months in 2011.

  2. Yup, just say Samsung copied Apple and be out by noon. Forced innovation, 2.5 billion in the local economy, and a poke in the eye of the local Samsung copy center. Would not be a bad days wage at 15 dollars.

    1. Yeah, except Kirby is full of shit. Admittedly, I didn’t get past his Dillon comparison, but those were incredibly weak. If the strength of those was indicative of the rest of his evidence, then it appears he was stretching pretty far to “prove” a conclusion he already accepted. Look, anyone with common sense recognizes that very few things are pristinely “New”. What goes around comes around. We stand on the shoulders of giants. We are only saprovores leeching off the entrails of our predecessors. Etc. We get it. If you are human you are influenced by others. But the genesis of creativity is not what is at issue. What is at issue is Patent Law and trade dress infringement. I am pretty sick of this insipid relativism. “Oh, Apple copied too”. If some company thinks Apple copied their product, then they can sue Apple and convince a jury just like Apple is attempting to do.
