iPhone resale prices peak: Should you sell early?

“A cautionary note for Apple’s Undecided: If you want an iPhone 5, it might pay to sell your iPhone 4S now — especially if you can survive a couple of weeks without either one,” Quentin Fottrell reports for SmartMoney.

“The hotly anticipated iPhone 5 is widely expected to hit stores around Sept. 12, and analysts foresee some major structural changes,” Fottrell reports. “As the release day gets closer, the market is likely to be flooded with old iPhones; 84% of people who previously traded in old iPhones are already preparing to do so again, according to a survey of 1,400 Gazelle customers. But in the past, those floods have turned into gluts, typically causing prices to drop by 20% to 25%, says Jeff Trachsel, chief marketing officer of resale site NextWorth.com.”

Fottrell reports, “Current prices probably represent a peak. And those who bought their iPhones for $199 as part of a two-year wireless contract might actually stand to make a profit.”

    A *couple* of weeks?

It’s mid-August. Rumors are an announcement Sept 12-ish and availability late September. Then of course there will be the a crush of pre-orders and days/weeks of lineups where, if you miss the pre-order (IIRC Apple’s messed up at least one recent release, where all pre-release units were spoken for by the time the west coast woke up) or hit bad luck, you might not actually get one until mid- to late-October.

Not saying don’t do it, but a “couple” of weeks is an understatement when the rumors put availability at least 6 weeks away.

    1. Mossi-man! What is wrong with you???? How can you speak so logically about something so emotionally important as the next release of an iPhone??? My (insert your favourite deity’s name here) man, you are living in the real world.

Please get some sense and try to anticipate the pent up need to stand in long lines overnight for the next 6 to 8 weeks. For many of us, it is our only opportunity to make social contact with like-minded Apple affectionatoes who also are willing to risk the wilds of a concrete jungle to capture the new beast!

Mate, you are so spot on. I give you a +10 to the 1,000,000th
