Google admits Siri is the future of web search, introduces Siri-like app for iOS (with video)

Daniel Eran Dilger reports for AppleInsider, “Google told reporters today that the future of web search looks identical to Apple’s Siri, admitting, ‘if we are going to build the search of the future, we will have to solve difficult technology issues like speech recognition and natural language.’ …To achieve that, Google will need to follow the lead of Apple’s Siri, which was designed to figure out the question users were posing, rather than simply finding potential answers to property formed questions.”

“Google added voice-based question and answer services to Android 4.1, but the race to add new features to the Android platform is complicated by the fact that new versions have very slow adoption, in large part because Google’s partners have little incentive to provide updates to their customers,” Dilger reports. “According to Google’s own data from August 1, only 0.8% of Android users visiting its Google Play app market are on the latest Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” release. A full 80 percent of the active user base are suck with a version of Android 2.x, which came out 2010. In contrast, Apple just noted that 80 percent of iOS users are running the latest iOS 5.”

Dilger reports, “To get its own Siri-like features in front of users, Google will be releasing its ‘Voice Search’ feature for iOS as a third party app ‘within the next couple of days,’ noting that it submitted the app ‘a week or so’ ago.”

MacDailyNews Take: Siri, what’s hypocrisy?

Siri: Hypocrisy is the claim or pretense of holding beliefs, feelings, standards, qualities, opinions, virtues or motivations that one does not actually possess and/or applying criticism to others that one does not apply equally to oneself.

Here’s a good example:

“I don’t believe that your phone should be an assistant. Your phone is a tool for communicating. You shouldn’t be communicating with the phone; you should be communicating with somebody on the other side of the phone.” – Andy Rubin, Google’s Android chief, October 19, 2011

Thanks, Siri.

And that horrendously irritating results chime will drive users batshit insane in short order.

    1. Why? Because you have an iPhone 3GS or 4.

But then, the best option is to upgrade to the new iPhone in the next couple months.

Besides, with Google’s new (and continually evolving) “Privacy” policies (or should I say Anti Privacy Policy) Google might be recording every queer y you make to their system — the better to sell targeted advertising. Ask Google voice search where the nearest ribs joint is and you’ll get to listen to five advertisements — four of which are based upon not just this one request but also information gathered from your prior 1,000 queries all of which Google keeps on file to better sell targeted advertising (for which they can get many, many more $$$ than random advertising).

  1. God I hate Google… They seem to be Americas answer to Samsung….. It’s kind of sad though that people are so uniformed that they support a homegrown outfit that is copying the behavior of thr worst of another countries “stars”.

    1. Fanboys Apple did not invent siri, or speech to text, or voice assistance. You think you would be happy that google is bringing a very valuable app to the ios ecosystem that iphone users pre iphone 4s, but no you need to bitch and moan like the clueless fanatics you are.

      1. The only bat-shit clueless ignoramus is anyone who would buy the immoral gains from stolen property sold by the biggest thieves in technology that are Samsung and Google. It also make YOU a thief.

        1. well… I did a search for “bat-shit clueless ignoramus” and oddly… This page was the *only* hit.

so Paul had better copyright it quick.
If you can prove prior usage.. ask Samsung how to skirt copyright laws.

        2. “Bat-shit clueless ignoramus” (Pat pending) refers to a Single Android Samsung Phone owner, and “Bat-shit clueless ignorami” (Pat pending) refers to a bunch of Android Samsung Phone owners.

      2. But Mark,

Apple does not need to MAKE or INVENT anything.
Because, Apple INNOVATES. They research and adopt and buy into technologies that would DIFFERENTIATE Apple from it’s competitors. Meanwhile, setting trends and pushing the envelope – changing the landscape – leading the computer sector. And how you PUT all the PARTS together – you should be able to PATENT and PROTECT your Products.

Meanwhile, everyone just copies Apple. Apple bought SIRI and said to the World this is how Search on the Internet will be and integrated the technology into its software and hardware… but Mark not to be copied by others.

Yeah I am a Fanboy of Apple.

    2. Thought Google employees many Americans; the business model with Android and dealing with freely granting licences of its operating software to the likes of HTC and SAMSUNG, allows Asia to harness – copy – and unfairly compete with Apple. This truly should be looked as a major Sell Out on Google itself as a company. To its people; those it employes, the nation; the country at large and the customers who foolishly purchase Android.

Consider, Google a traitor to America.
      Selling secrets to the enemy.

  2. I love apple, but have any of your actually hit the home button and said “Siri, what’s hypocrisy?”

If you do, you will welcome the challenge from Google – or anyone who can get Siri to become more of a priority so it might WORK!!!

    1. It works. First time, too. Whats your point? Here’s what it said:

      1. noun an expression of agreement not supported by reality

      2. noun insincerity by virtue of pretending to have qualities or beliefs that you do not really have.

then it goes on to list pronunciation, hyphenation, lots of other stuff then ending in “scrabble score”.

    2. We all agree that Siri could stand improvement, and if Google’s “I dream of Jeannie” interface surpasses Apple’s “Robo Girl”, good!

The bitching and moaning is about Google’s clear-eyed intent to use it to gather ever more personal information about YOU and sell it for top dollar to producers of ever more ADS, making Jeannie hardly more than a slickly designed SHILL.

    3. first, drop “Siri” from your query. it’s not needed.

      2nd, learn to talk clearly.

Like Paul, I get Siri to respond perfectly 99% of the time.
if there is background noise, then she gets confused.. sometimes. (depends on the background)

  3. Great News.
Now perhaps Apple will remove the stupid restrictions on iPads and older iPhones so that we can all use Siri instead of everyone migrating to Google to do searches.

  4. Googles only advantage right now are their servers, having 13 confirmed in the US while apple only has 1. Other than that Siri is more advanced but slower due to Apple’s single server

    1. Actually, that isn’t true.

Apple has one massive server farm.

Do you really think there is only one server there?

Also, they have other servers elsewhere; the server farm in North Carolina is simply what they’ve dedicated to iCloud/Siri… With more coming.

  5. Hey MDN your take applies equally well to Steve Jobs and the recent ‘Steve was receptive to a 7 inch tablet” article we recently saw posted here.

In your defense apple has publicly announced a 7ish ipad!
