Apple’s two-day-old OS X Mountain Lion already accounts for 3% of Mac traffic

“Thanks to its easy download and low price, Apple’s Mountain Lion appears on pace to be one of the most quickly adopted operating systems in history,” Ina Fried reports for AllThingsD.

“After just its first 48 hours on the market, Apple’s new Mountain Lion already accounts for more than 3 percent of Mac Web traffic, according to numbers provided to AllThingsD by Web tracking firm Chitika,” Fried reports. “‘Moreover, based on Apple’s June 2012 announcement that there are currently 66 million Mac users in the wild, we can infer that 2.11 million Mac users downloaded OS X Mountain Lion in the past 48 hours,’ Chitika said. ‘Using this figure, if we assume that 90 percent of these users paid to upgrade, OS X Mountain Lion generated $38 million in revenue for Apple in the past 48 hours.'”

Nice but I believe that the most impressive OS out today is the latest release of Ubuntu and the forecasts suggest that this year alone we could see an increase of Ubuntu users of around 20 million and is some serious numbers. The integration between mobility and stationary devices is unbelievable.

    2. Thats an interesting belief Pat but I’ve used Ubuntu and it’s no OS X. It’s one of the more user friendly versions of Linux but it’s still not ready for the average user.

    3. The way Apple is accelerating the pace of dropping support for their computers, pretty soon Ubuntu will be the only option for a good up-to-date OS on your Mac.
      I’m glad I can afford to replace my computer regularly.

  2. 38 million in 48 hours? Wow…

    Anyways, I am enjoying Mountain Lin very much. The new features really come in handy and so much more t discover….

    However, I have read in other blogs about some users having Wireless issues with mountain lion. Some say it disconnects every few minutes, others say every few hours and others say it is working fine. Does anyone know anything more about this? I sure am not having issues. But I’m just curious.

    1. Steve. I have not seen this issue at all. Mac mini mid 2011 i7 dual core.

      What I have seen is when I watch a movie through iTunes. My curser vanishes right away. It stays invisable until I sleep the display or Command Q iTunes.

      One other iTunes note. It will crash when playing mpegs! It’s has crashed on every mpeg I have tried to play. 🙁

    2. Hi Steve,
      I did face the disconnection of wifi just after updating to Mt. Lion. Everytime it happens, I had to switch-off and switch-on the wifi to bring back.

    6. Saying that some users are having issues based on blogs and support forums is like visiting a hospital and saying there’s a lot of sick people. Overall, there are a very small percentage of the population having issues.

    7. Unfortunately I updated recently from Lion. I’ve had this exact problem. I’ve also experience a drastic slowdown in my computer overall even. I hope they can fix this thing.

  3. I did upgrade dozens of Macs in my company with no problems at all. The very best thing is with the Retina MacBook Pro: scrolling is very fast and smooth now.

  6. I just don’t understand why we had to pay even the 20 bucks for it since it is actually what we were promised when we bought Lion. Now it just works. Nice, but clearly a disingenuous move in the post Jobs era. The uninspiring Mr. Cook takes another hit.

Well, let’s look at a couple of other issues as well… IMMEDIATELY, after Mountain Lion installs, AND you TRY and start various, STANDARD, applications like mail, contacts or Safari, be REAL careful what happens…. Let’s start with ‘Contects’ (address book) … On my install TODAY, the initial setup thought my old pop mail account was in fact an iCloud account… UGLY. So, the way that Mountain Lion looks at ‘contacts’ as part of ‘mail’ and iCloud is a bit odd. Mountain Lion could not figure out who it was or what it was or where to go to find out when trying to ‘update’ my contacts database (217 entries) …. It just sits and churns in a loop FOREVER. Luckily, I was sitting at a Genius Bar, otherwise I would STILL be trying to figure this out. A ‘genius’ helped me by deleting some .plist files (he did it too fast for me to follow) but it was not fun.

    THEN, because the initial setup process thought my old pop account was an iCloud account and allegedly messed up my ‘contacts’ database, when I started the Mountain Lion MAIL client, things got REAL strange… the new Mail just IGNORED almost all of the mail FOLDERS in my mail client from Snow Leopard… Just ignored them… I had to retrieve my latest Time Machine back-up and get my old email folders from that back-up. NOW, I have to IMPORT these into the new Mountain Lion mail client… This will take hours…

    All in all… UGLY. AND, I was at an Apple Store !!!!!

  8. No problems ….. Everything works …. Nothing lost ……

    I did do all recommended steps including update before and I even repaired permissions and wrote over unused space, etc …… All before installing MT
