WSJ: Amazon testing smartphone with 4 to 5-inch screen

“Amazon.com Inc. is working with component suppliers in Asia to test a smartphone, people familiar with the situation said, suggesting that the Internet retail giant, which sells the Kindle Fire tablet computers, is considering broadening its mobile-device offerings,” Lorraine Luk reports for The Wall Street Journal.

“Officials at some of Amazon’s parts suppliers, who declined to be named, said the Seattle-based company is testing a smartphone and mass production of the new device may start late this year or early next year,” Luk reports. “One person said that the screen of Amazon’s smartphone currently being tested measures between four and five inches. Bloomberg last week reported that Amazon was developing a smartphone.”

Luk reports, “In May, people familiar with the matter said Apple’s next iPhone, which is expected to come out later this year, will likely have a screen larger than four inches, compared with the current iPhone’s 3.5-inch display.”

MacDailyNews Take: Because nothing says “quality user experience” more than a branded smartphone from an online retailer powered by an OS from a search engine/online advertising firm.

  1. Nothing more than trying to prop up amazon stock price. Probably a very bad quarter and the options are ready to be exercised by management. Need to maximize those stock options.

  2. People need to realize that these companies feed off the ignorance and stupidity of the american consumer. If it’s ‘almost’ like an iPhone and ‘almost’ does the same thing as an iPhone but it’s ‘WAY’ cheaper, the stupid American public will buy it. People care about cheap first and foremost and quality far second. It’s a shame.

  3. Jeez, everyone is making a phone. What next:

American Express phone, ” Don’t leave home without it”.

Consumer Reports phone: ” Check out our American Gothic theme”.

Eminem phone: ” F..k you bitch, buy it”.

Disney phone: ” We have Mickey Mouse products”.

  4. Exactly how does Amazon get its lofty Price Earnings ratio? Here we have a company, APPLE, that delivers superior return on sales, has customers that love it, makes QUALITY, hardware software.

Now we have Amazon, barley makes a profit, has a strategy to start a line of business to sell hardware below cost, and earns a higher PE ratio / rating because of these types of strategies?????????

This crap company has been over-promising profit potential for a decade. I’d put my money with Ballmer before this crazy bunch.

    1. The notion that Apple needs competition is a popular fallacy. Apple’s competition is Apple. As we’ve said many times: Competition is only good when the competition is any good.

The rest of the dreck only confuses the market and results in people wasting their time, money, and potential productivity on inferior wares.MacDailyNews Take, July 3, 2012
