More blood on Apple iPad’s touchscreen: LG quits tablet market

“LG Electronics Inc., the world’s No. 4 mobile-phone maker, will sideline tablet computer development to focus more on smaller devices rather than compete head-on with Apple Inc.’s iPad,” Jun Yang reports for Bloomberg.

“LG introduced its second tablet named Optimus Pad LTE earlier this year as rivals including Samsung Electronics Inc., maker of Galaxy tablets and smartphones, sought to challenge the iPad,” Yang reports. “The electronics maker is trying to turn around its mobile- phone business with its Optimus line of Android-powered smartphones after being overtaken by Apple (AAPL) as the No. 3 handset maker last year.”

Yang reports, “LG, which also makes Windows-based PCs, is still open to making phones using Microsoft software, Ken Hong, a spokesman for Seoul-based LG, said in an e-mailed response to queries.”

  1. SJ always concentrated effort on a very few products that had very significant development before market entry. Copying from a standing start is therefore very difficult because you have a long way to go to catch up before you have any chance to challenge their position in the market place by the time you can get there.
In short, come up with your own inventions and take them to market – Apple can kill most copies of their product even when they have taken it to bits and reverse engineered a product.

  2. May have been part of the deal to get the retina display business for the 15″ MBP. May mean LG will be doing more business with Apple as they expand retina displays to 13″ MBP and beyond. If true, they haven’t gotten out of the tablet business; they’ve just gotten in with the winner…

  3. LG Tablets with Android 3.0 (Honeycomb)
We all know the well earned reputation Android devices have for not being able to upgrade to even the existing OS.
If I were trying to keep customers happy and keep my reputation, I’d get out of the tablet business too.

  4. WINDOWS 8 IS COMMING. All mac’s going back to there places where they belong under the desk, the bottom of the tech department storage closet, or a very lonely corner collecting dust. Cheer up mac fans your desktops gonna look lovely. Again.
