“Harman International Industries Inc. (HAR), a maker of car infotainment systems, fell the most over two days this year after Apple Inc. (AAPL) said it’s working with automakers on a Siri voice-command button for steering wheels,” Mark Clothier reports for Bloomberg.
“The shares slid 8.9 percent for their biggest two-day decline since December,” Clothier reports. “Apple said yesterday that it’s working with carmakers such as Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW), General Motors Co. (GM), Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. to add the button activating Siri, its voice-recognition software. That sent shares of Stamford, Connecticut-based Harman down 5.2 percent for the day.”
‘Apple is a partner, not an adversary,’ Harman Chief Executive Officer Dinesh Paliwal said in an interview today. Harman, which supplies equipment that combines music, maps and other information in automobiles, has been working with Apple and BMW on integrating the iPhone into BMW vehicles, he said,” Clothier reports. “The feature, Apple for Automotive, will be available on BMW vehicles this fall, Paliwal said… Harman has said its gear is in 80 percent of luxury vehicles sold.”

It’s better to join Wirh Apple than fight them…. A lesson Google and many others never learned or have learned too late.
Partnership can keep you from certain death when a force like Apple enters your space…. If you can’t beat them join them…..at this point it is pretty obvious they can not be beaten.

Apple have worked with Harmon for years; who was it made the transparent speaker ‘sticks’ and jellyfish subwoofer when the original iMac came out…
Don’t forget the little acrylic “Apple Pro” speaker globes. I used a set on my old Powermac. I think Harman speaker technology is still used in current aluminum iMacs, though I could be wrong.
I sell Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and trust me, Apple is deeply entrenched in our business, from the vehicles, to the many iPad apps that we use for day-to-day business.
I also drive a 2012 Mercedes-Benz with Harmon Karden.
The system is able to stream audio from any iPhone app I choose, wirelessly over Bluetooth.
Many competitor products work, but Apple gear always seems to work the best.
The funny thing is that the button for Siri is already there!
It’s the voice control button–if you have an Apple device paired to the system, Siri will take over. If you have a competitor device (no Siri), you will get the system default voice controls, which work okay… But it’s no Siri.
I am not privy to any special info; it’s just an educated guess, but it makes sense.
