Apple CEO Cook, Samsung CEO Choi fail to reach settlement over patents

“The widely anticipated two-day meeting between chief executives of Samsung and Apple yielded no agreement between the parties mired in a hot legal dispute over copyright infringements,” Cho Mu-hyun reprots for The Korea Times.

“Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung and Shin Jong-kyun, head of the firm’s mobile division, left Seoul Sunday for the United States to meet Apple CEO Tim Cook by order of the Northern District Court of California, in an attempt to settle the patent fight without going into costly legal proceedings,” Cho reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Suckers take the walk.

Cho reports, “The two technology giants could find no clear agreement through the talks, according to a Samsung official… The patent battle is now headed for trial in July… The dispute started in April last year when Apple sued Samsung for copying the “look and feel” of the iPhone for the Korean company’s hot-selling Galaxy smartphones.”

MacDailyNews Take: This outcome was completely predictable; never in doubt. The judge who ordered this “settlement meeting” fiasco accomplished nothing more than wasting two more days of everyone’s time. Another million or so Samsung knockoffs infringing Apple’s patented IP moved to market in the meantime. Bravo, justice!

    1. No, the American judge. That’s why it was in San Francisco and not Seoul.

And while the meetings were a waste of time and money for everyone, they were a bigger waste of time and money for Samedung.

  1. Hmm… doesn’t Samsung make Apple’s A5 processor at a plant in Texas? Doesn’t it also make the Retina display? They must be making money off each other hand over foot. Is this little legal kerfuffle kinda like professional wrestling?

  2. You knew neither party was interested in settling. Apple wants its day in court and Scamsung is perfectly content to juke and stall the courts until – and if – they’re forced to change something. Meanwhile, millions more of their knock-offs find their way into unsuspecting consumers’ hands and Sammy puts another record sales quarter in the books. Apple has to wait (now over a year and counting) and risk an Oracle-like setback at trial and Samsuck doesn’t have to do a damn thing.

  3. A settlement conference is a standard part of this entire process. It’s unlikely anything would come of it, but something that is required before proceeding to trial.
