Not true – the top 1% pay about 40% of all income taxes according to the IRS.
The reason why their income tax rate is lower is that many of the really wealthy pay capital gains tax which is a different kind of tax. The government has resisted increasing taxation on investments because that’s what fuels investment in the economy without the risk of borrowing.
“40%” I am sure some of that is true. But look at people like Mitt Romney, he payed only 16% on taxes. Almost everyone in the top 1% use these loopholes.

As an American working in Canada, I can tell you that many of the most onerous US tax measures were passed by Mr. Bush as part of the Patriot Act frenzy. These tax changes make it difficult for American overseas to invest, save and even open a local bank account. The increasing regulatory burden coming from these acts (implemented by Mr. Bush) are driving much of the citizenship renouncements. The “Everything is Obama’s Fault” mentality is both incorrect and reflective of the loss of critical thinking in our increasingly illogically polarized political process.

Clinton had a distinct advantage over Obama in terms of the economic conditions under which he assumed the office. Obama inherited a ‘big bag o’ hurt’ from the previous eight years including the continuation of two long wars, mounting deficits from ill-advised tax cuts, and an epic collapse of the financial system and housing market fueling a rapidly worsening recession resulting in hundreds of thousands of lost jobs each month. Since interest rates were already at historical lows, there was no room to stimulate the economy by reducing interest rates. And American citizens had already reached their borrowing limits and were actually attempting to save money just when the economy needed consumer spending the most. Add in high oil prices and the European debt crisis (which is far from over), and you have the makings of the worst economic hand dealt to a President in many decades.
I don’t agree with everything that Obama has done. But the small minded people who blame him for everything are nuts. And the polarization of U.S. politics has only made things worse.
When did paying taxes to support this great nation become an evil thing? And why did the members of the Republican party allow their platform to be hijacked by a small group of vocal extremists? Your comment on tax rates 100 years ago is irrelevant to the current situation. The Federal Government did less back then – less services, less military, etc. At best, your assertion merely supports the idea that we need to pay for the government services that we consume as a nation. We can consume less and pay less in taxes, or we can consume more and pay more in taxes. What we *cannot* do is consume more and pay less in taxes, which is the trend that started in 2001. Two wars, massive increases in Defense spending, a Medicare drug card, and major tax cuts do not mix well together if your objective is to balance the budget.
If you truly want to balance the budget then you will at least consider substantial reductions in Defense spending.
It was Bill Clinton who decided that not giving mortgages to people who couldn’t repay them was “racist” and passed regulations forcing banks to write bad loans and the federal government to buy them.

I have lived on several different continents and have at least a tiny bit of perspective… until recently America used to be a country where successful people were idolized, more than demonized. There was a collective pride in the concept of a “melting pot;” we used to study that in school. If you saw a successful businessperson you aspired to be like them. It was a place of heroes. People will argue that we needed a kick in the teeth because we were racist unfair haters, but too many kicks in the teeth make people unproductive. Now there is cynicism and anger. People see a wealthy or successful person and figure they got rich by stealing from them and they owe them something back. It’s a separate issue from the rich leaving a country to avoid taxes. Lots of Brits moved here when your top tax rate hit 90-something percent before Thatcher. Having said all that, remember that the people you see posting to online forums do NOT represent most Americans, British or anyone else. It’s not additional taxes, it’s the Patriot Act and additional banking regulations which make it hard on you to work outside of the U.S. I deal with international commerce all the time, and banks outside of the U.S. simply do not want to deal with U.S. Citizens, because that means complying with and being subject to U.S. banking regulations.
Let’s be clear on one thing: blaming the tax code, the Patriot Act, overly restrictive banking regulations, etc. on either Bush or Obama is short-sighted: Don’t forget that Congress had to first pass the bills for the President to sign. Yet no one seems angry or upset with our long-term, constantly re-elected Senators and Representatives.

Ummm.. corporations are collections of people who make up a business…. people can be greedy acting corporately or as individuals… they can also do good things either way. The term corporation as a faceless person-less entity would not have the capacity to feel greed, lust, or philanthropy for that matter. Apple is a corporation. The people who work for Apple design, build and sell some amazing products. I get the corporate greed argument, but some people, somewhere, are making the decision to act a certain way. Regulate fairly and they will become better. Over-regulate and they will dry up or leave.

His comments are uneducated, but one point is true: Obama was and is sorely unqualified to be President. He was barely a Senator and a community organizer before that. He had no experience running anything: not a business, not a city/municipality, not a state, and missed about half of his votes in the Senate.
Bush and Clinton were both successful governors before being elected. Bush 41 was in government service for decades, including VP. Reagan was governor.
That brings us to Carter, who, like Obama, had very little experience beyond being a successful peanut farmer (very successful), and general nice guy. Look what happened. Same is happening with Obama; in fact, the similarities between the Carter and Obama administrations are rather frightening.
Ah, but now he has three years of experience, and with lots of measurable successes, even in the face of a Republican party who from almost day one has operated in the principle “I hope he fails”.
The economy was in free fall before the 08 election, it has at least bottomed out and not totally melted down. All of this with not cooperation from the Republicans in any way.
The results of the 2010 midterm elections, before which the Democrats controlled both houses and the Presidency, tell you the opinion held by the majority of Americans about Obama’s “successes.” Mr. Obama seems to have experience in only two things: Hype and Blame, which are a far cry from “Hope and Change.”
By all means, tz, vote for Obama, chanting “Forward.”

1- He attempted to ramp down the military industrial complex, canceling unnecessary crap like the B-1 bomber that Reagan promptly restored. Real world use of the B-1 showed Carter’s cancellation to be right.
2- The recession that cost Carter reelection was a choking of the inflation fueled by the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the oil shocks of the 1970’s. Carter tightened the budget and Fed Chair Paul Volker strangled the money supply. It killed the inflation after a period of recession that had been ongoing since the Nixon Administration.
3- Carter embraced a more multi-lateral foreign policy that paid dividends later. His emphasis on human rights caused major improvements in the lives of millions without the firing of one shot.
4- Carter warned the country about the economic and security risks caused by our then new heavy dependence upon imported middle eastern oil.
5- Middle East peace accords. 1st significant step down an ongoing path.
6- Cancellation of big budget pork barrel water projects built not for need- but greed.
7- The development of a whole new generation of weapons tat have served us well:
F-16, A-10, M-1 Tank, Blackhawk UH-60 family,

So I think I get it. You make billions off of a society and its labors and infrastructure, and its economy, and then take the money and run leaving that society that enabled your riches to fend for itself,because you are too greedy and selfish to pay taxes. Multiply this many time over, and this appears to constitute a small group of people who are literally sucking the wealth away from this nation, and leaving the collective rest of us poorer. This likely is a factor in the decline of the middle class.
The ones who spout the party line that “government is the problem” are the subset of billionaires who are immoral and criminal in their mentalities, and simply don’t want governments to restrain their ecocidal, genocidal, just plain evil behaviors.
There is a very, very small number of people who would even consider doing this, regardless of the taxes they would have to pay. Plus, there are all kinds of strategies he could implement which would reduce his taxable rate from 35%-39.5% down to near 20% or so if he wanted.
The article stated that the guy wasn’t a U.S. citizen by birth, and he has been living in Singapore and plans to live there indefinitely. This decision probably makes sense for him, but for most millionaires/billionaires, giving up your U.S. citizenship is just plain stupid.

So let me get this straight, in the article, it points out that next year the tax rate is set to go from 35% to 39.6%. This is President Bush’s fault? He will have been out of office for almost 4 years when taxes go up. Keep blaming him, that is a good idea.
This is perfect example of what conservatives talk about. 35% of $3 Billion is a lot of money (over a billion), while 39.6% of $0 still equals $0. I just don’t see how this can be argued as tax = bad & lower taxes always = good. It’s all about where that compromise should be. Taxes are at historic lows, especially on the uber-rich. Historic lows? Really? A report was just released a week or so ago that the US now has the highest corporate tax rate in the world. High taxes change human behavior. As most conservative probably agree, market forces should dictate prices and I believe the same for taxes. At this point in our history, taxes are too high and the market is showing us that. Yet, Obama spends and spends and spends with no regard to how he is destroying our future. I actually shouldn’t say that, he does know what he is doing. He is destroying the capitalist system our country is built on by design. As the article points out, more people than in the past are denouncing their citizenship, or at least more now than in 2008. The article does not state the reason for the increase in denunciations, however, it has been widely reported that companies dealing oversee are holding there capital overseas as they do not want to bring it home to face the tax implications. Our taxes are too high. Yes, Should we pay taxes. But taxing the so called uber-rich, when a large percentage of the population pays nothing and even receives money when they pay nothing in is not right either. I don’t think I have ever heard a single conservative politician, talk show host or friend call for no taxes. However there are certain taxes, like capital gains and such that are killers to generate growth in our economy that should be reduced or abolished..

He came to the US, attended one of its best universities and joined up with a fellow student to form FaceBook. Now that he’s going to be extremely rich, why should’t he return a portion to the country that helped him make that windfall.
He got the benefit of our emergency services, police, transportation and telecom infrastructure and many other things that are paid for by taxpayer dollars. And now he’s going to take his money and say to the US, “adios, mother fracker”.
