Facebook co-founder renounces U.S. citizenship ahead of IPO

“Eduardo Saverin, the billionaire co- founder of Facebook Inc. (FB), renounced his U.S. citizenship before an initial public offering that values the social network at as much as $96 billion, a move that may reduce his tax bill,” Danielle Kucera, Sanat Vallikappen and Christine Harper report for Bloomberg. “Facebook plans to raise as much as $11.8 billion through the IPO, the biggest in history for an Internet company. Saverin’s stake is about 4 percent, according to the website Who Owns Facebook. At the high end of the IPO valuation, that would be worth about $3.84 billion. His holdings aren’t listed in Facebook’s regulatory filings.”

Kucera, Vallikappen and Harper report, “Saverin, 30, joins a growing number of people giving up U.S. citizenship, a move that can trim their tax liabilities in that country. The Brazilian-born resident of Singapore is one of several people who helped Mark Zuckerberg start Facebook in a Harvard University dorm and stand to reap billions of dollars after the world’s largest social network holds its IPO. ‘Eduardo recently found it more practical to become a resident of Singapore since he plans to live there for an indefinite period of time,’ said Tom Goodman, a spokesman for Saverin, in an e-mailed statement.”

“Saverin moved to the U.S. in 1992, and became a citizen in 1998, his spokesman said,” Kucera, Vallikappen and Harper report. “Renouncing citizenship is an option chosen by increasing numbers of Americans. A record 1,780 gave up their U.S. passports last year compared with 235 in 2008, according to government records. Income-tax rates for top U.S. earners will rise to 39.6 percent from 35 percent next year, and rates on capital gains and dividends also are scheduled to rise unless Congress blocks the increases. ‘It’s a loss for the U.S. to have many well-educated people who actually have a great deal of affection for America make that choice,’ said Richard Weisman, an attorney at Baker & McKenzie in Hong Kong. ‘The tax cost, complexity and the traps for the unwary are among the considerations.'”

          Spoken like a true Condumb!

So i guess if you were getting a big financial payday that you would feel compelled to renounce your citizenship and move to another country. Spoken like a true Patriot.

        2. If you libTURDS keep destroying the US why would anyone want to live here anymore. You Statist are the disease. Conservatism is the CURE!!!!

        3. Absolutely. Taxes are theft, and the number of people renouncing is up 10x.

You guys think you can spend without limit and then steal to make up for it, but people are not falling for it.

When the economy continues to tank it will be all your fault.

        4. “You guys think you can spend without limit,” Liberals do not spend limitlessly, we provide social programs where as you conservatives spend almost a trillion dollars a year on defence that isn’t needed. Where do you get your facts for the people renouncing? Taxes are what drive the government to do what they do. Without taxes you wouldn’t get your O-So precious defence spending, new roads or social programs which benefit society as a whole. “When the economy continues to tank,” It will not be our fault. It will be your defence spending and the bankers that are scamming people and making faulty mortgages. BTW over 25% of what the USA spends on is pointless, It is your military.

        5. You are really dumb enought to believe the rich actually pay these tax rates? Most of them pay lose to zero taxes. How pitiful is it to be on your knees to the 1%.

        6. Not true – the top 1% pay about 40% of all income taxes according to the IRS.

The reason why their income tax rate is lower is that many of the really wealthy pay capital gains tax which is a different kind of tax. The government has resisted increasing taxation on investments because that’s what fuels investment in the economy without the risk of borrowing.

        7. “40%” I am sure some of that is true. But look at people like Mitt Romney, he payed only 16% on taxes. Almost everyone in the top 1% use these loopholes.

      1. Two reasons:

        1. This is an Applecentric news aggregator site that also links to news on companies that have had connections to Apple in some way, shape, or form.

        2. It’s their site, and they can post what they choose. 😜

  1. Just wait to see how many flee the U.S. if the unimaginable happens and The Empty Suit somehow avoids the landslide coming his way and gets re-elected.

It’ll make the current exodus out of France look like nothing.

The USA got way too close to the precipice, but I’m not worried. I’ll be partying right here in the good old U.S.A. early the night of November 6th!

    1. As an American working in Canada, I can tell you that many of the most onerous US tax measures were passed by Mr. Bush as part of the Patriot Act frenzy. These tax changes make it difficult for American overseas to invest, save and even open a local bank account. The increasing regulatory burden coming from these acts (implemented by Mr. Bush) are driving much of the citizenship renouncements. The “Everything is Obama’s Fault” mentality is both incorrect and reflective of the loss of critical thinking in our increasingly illogically polarized political process.

        1. Oh please… Canada isn’t *communist* maybe Liberal… sure.

And I never blamed anything on bush… I just think you’re ignorant to call canada communist. Thus, you’ve lost all credibility with me. Go learn what communism is.

        2. Every bit of crap that Liberals spew makes anything they have zero credibility!!!!

Obviously Canada isn’t communist. But you liberal – drones would love it to be.

        3. Could you please back up your claims about “liberal drones” [sic] wanting canada to be communist? do you have any evidence? I suppose you did some surveys?

I despise people like you because of the constant “every _______ has ______” crap you throw out there.

For example, you claim “every liberal has zero credibility” which is probably untrue. I could go find one liberal who was even slightly credible and your argument would go down the shitter.

You don’t back up any of your claims with factual concrete data.

Ad hominem is a logical fallacy you clearly engage in. Don’t name call unless you can also back that up with facts. “drones” oh please.

        4. Interesting how DimWit201 only singles out the conservative examples that he wants backed up when the liberal-scum nonstop make claims without any back up.

Take a stroll on over to the Heritage Foundations web site among many other sources. You will find mountains of examples. There are many other great places to expand your mind. But you are a drone. You won’t absorb any of it. You will lose it and turn into a babbling puddle.

So take your stupid avatar and shove it commie!

        5. I see you are an example of “… the loss of critical thinking in our increasingly illogically polarized political process.”

I guess that my belief that we should have some rationality involved in politics makes me a “commie loser” and negates my history of voting for Nixon and Reagan? Though truth be told I also voted for Mr. Clinton…

        6. I have far more respect for Obama on a personal level than Bill Clinton. Obama is a better father and husband than Bill Clinton who set the bar below sea level.

That said Bill Clinton was a better president than Obama and with the exception of his total failure on terrorism, he left the country in better shape than Obama especially financially.

If Obama could at least run a credible and sustainable budget that did not bankrupt the future of this country and saddle the future generations with debt that they did not vote for or benefit from, I could overlook a lot of what I don’t like about him.

As it stands I’d rather have Daffy Duck as president.

        7. As opposed to the illegal alien, Kenyan who has only shown a forged birth certificate, has a phony CT issued social security number from 1979, and has spent millions to keep his college records hidden that show he is a foreign exchange student.

He is an admitted COCAINE user among other drugs.

          He hates the US.

          He is a racist.

          He hates freedom.

Then you have Mitt Romney. Very successful, accomplished, business and family man. Not conservative enough for many’s taste but lightyears better than the scum bag in chief.

You parasite-statists are so clueless it’s SAD!

        8. Clinton had a distinct advantage over Obama in terms of the economic conditions under which he assumed the office. Obama inherited a ‘big bag o’ hurt’ from the previous eight years including the continuation of two long wars, mounting deficits from ill-advised tax cuts, and an epic collapse of the financial system and housing market fueling a rapidly worsening recession resulting in hundreds of thousands of lost jobs each month. Since interest rates were already at historical lows, there was no room to stimulate the economy by reducing interest rates. And American citizens had already reached their borrowing limits and were actually attempting to save money just when the economy needed consumer spending the most. Add in high oil prices and the European debt crisis (which is far from over), and you have the makings of the worst economic hand dealt to a President in many decades.

I don’t agree with everything that Obama has done. But the small minded people who blame him for everything are nuts. And the polarization of U.S. politics has only made things worse.

When did paying taxes to support this great nation become an evil thing? And why did the members of the Republican party allow their platform to be hijacked by a small group of vocal extremists? Take your party back and work for the good of the nation before the obstructionism and illogic ruins any remaining chance of recovering! It is criminal to advocate spending over $500B dollars on “national defense” each year when we are racking up $T in debt. If you advocate smaller government, then you have to address the fact that the military is a government entity that is funded by taxpayers.

        9. Queen Smell you are delusional and a liar.

          You lack any credibility.

You liberal, brain, dead, communist, wannabes, destroyed the economy with your Fannie and Freddie, illegal, fiasco. Period!

          Go To Hell!

        10. The tax rate in 1915 was %1, and that was only for the truly rich. Now its %15 for even poor people.

And still you guys can’t balance a budget to save your lives.

        11. Who are these “you guys” who can’t balance a budget. The evidence points to politicians from both parties sharing responsibility for deficit spending over the last few decades. Check the national debt trend since 1970 or 1980…

Your comment on tax rates 100 years ago is irrelevant to the current situation. The Federal Government did less back then – less services, less military, etc. At best, your assertion merely supports the idea that we need to pay for the government services that we consume as a nation. We can consume less and pay less in taxes, or we can consume more and pay more in taxes. What we *cannot* do is consume more and pay less in taxes, which is the trend that started in 2001. Two wars, massive increases in Defense spending, a Medicare drug card, and major tax cuts do not mix well together if your objective is to balance the budget.

If you truly want to balance the budget then you will at least consider substantial reductions in Defense spending.

        12. It was Bill Clinton who decided that not giving mortgages to people who couldn’t repay them was “racist” and passed regulations forcing banks to write bad loans and the federal government to buy them.

Producing the housing bubble and subsequent crash.

So, while Obama is a terrible president, Clinton is pretty terrible as well. And so is Bush.

          They’re all terrible.

        13. If Bush wasn’t a “true” conservative, then I am not sure that I want to see one. There are conservative policies that I support, but I doubt that they coincide with many of the platform points that you emphasize.

The fact that you use derogatory terms like “DemoTurd” demonstrates that your level of reasoning is somewhere in the range of 4th Grade.

        14. We covered this before. The anti-discrimination policy did *not* force bad loans. Stupid, greedy financial institutions chasing excessive profits and ignoring or hiding risks caused the vast majority of the problem. I read the friggin’ policy from 1994. Have you?

Engineer, my opinion of you drops further with each of your posts. You give my profession a bad name. Choose another anonymous handle, please.

        15. You are so egotistical. Just because people may hate *you* is no reason to believe that they hate everyone, or even every ultraconservative out there. Perhaps you are just incredibly hateable? Perhaps your ideas are as appealing as the sludge at the bottom of a sewer channel?

          Paraphrasing from Dr. Seuss:

Your soul is an apalling dump heap overflowing
with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable
          rubbish imaginable,
Mangled up in tangled up knots.

          You nauseate me, Tflint.
          With a nauseaus super-naus.
          You’re a crooked jerky jockey
And you drive a crooked hoss.
          Tflint.

          Enjoy the arsenic sauce…

        16. I may be an Englishman, but I thought Canada Mark’s thoughts were interesting, well considered and moderately expressed.
A rare thing these days, it seems, on this particular forum, which sadly seems to have become almost completely hijacked by extreme right-wing nutters.
I swore I’d never return here due to your interminable, hate-filled ravings. But here I am again, hoping against hope that you’ve finally crawled back beneath your white hoods and allowed the rest of us to- good grief!- just talk about Macs.
Do you people ‘really’ still use words like ‘commie’, like you’re caught up in some Dr. Strangelove plot? (apologies- you won’t have heard of that, it was an intelligent film.)
Jeez, you’re supposed to be the privileged citizens of the richest and free-est country on the planet. So why are so many of you so bloody angry all the time?

        17. I agree with you about Canada Mark’s thoughts, but if you look at the story we all clicked to enter, it’s about renouncing US Citizenship– a magnet for political talk, not a discussion of Macs. No one forced us to click on this story. I will answer your anger question however. I have lived on several different continents and have at least a tiny bit of perspective… until recently America used to be a country where successful people were idolized, more than demonized. There was a collective pride in the concept of a “melting pot;” we used to study that in school. If you saw a successful businessperson you aspired to be like them. It was a place of heroes. People will argue that we needed a kick in the teeth because we were racist unfair haters, but too many kicks in the teeth make people unproductive. Now there is cynicism and anger. People see a wealthy or successful person and figure they got rich by stealing from them and they owe them something back. It’s a separate issue from the rich leaving a country to avoid taxes. Lots of Brits moved here when your top tax rate hit 90-something percent before Thatcher. Having said all that, remember that the people you see posting to online forums do NOT represent most Americans, British or anyone else. People say outlandish things to get attention and create more hits to a website… it’s their 15 seconds of fame. Or I should say 15 seconds of flame 😉

        18. I don’t hate conservatives, I think they are sad about their arguments. Look at the liberal replies and then your. The liberals are paragraphs long, and yours are all of one insult, maybe another about how bad Obama is. Which I agree, because he did almost everything you wanted. Lower taxes etc. The only thing you are against is Obamacare. Try again.

      1. It’s not additional taxes, it’s the Patriot Act and additional banking regulations which make it hard on you to work outside of the U.S. I deal with international commerce all the time, and banks outside of the U.S. simply do not want to deal with U.S. Citizens, because that means complying with and being subject to U.S. banking regulations.

Let’s be clear on one thing: blaming the tax code, the Patriot Act, overly restrictive banking regulations, etc. on either Bush or Obama is short-sighted: Don’t forget that Congress had to first pass the bills for the President to sign. Yet no one seems angry or upset with our long-term, constantly re-elected Senators and Representatives.

The President can’t do anything major or lasting without Congress first passing the law.

        1. Good points! I am not a big fan of either of the last two leaders, but in the system of checks and balances, two individuals can not govern without support from the other branches. I see regulations squeezing out commerce and freedom all around me, often having opposite consequences of their intentions. I disagree about the taxes.. I think it is both taxes and regulation, but commerce will find the path of least resistance – Apple is a good example. Design in North America, manufacturing (mostly) in Asia. Some people scream about wanting Apple to manufacture more at “home,” but do Americans want to work for the wage of an average Foxconn worker? Not going to happen unless we are starving… Hmmm hope it doesn’t come to that…. Thanks for your thoughtful discourse and lack of name calling by the way.

      2. As a true progressive or liberal if you will, let me assure the teabaggers prowling the boards that President Obama is about as socialist as William F Buckley was. A generation ago he would have fit into the mainstream of the Republican Party.

Bush’s paranoid nonsense went so far as to close up the longest undefended border in the world- that between the US and Canada. It was a symbol of the best of both countries and it’s just another barrier erected by paranoid people who have yet to learn that locks and fences only keep the honest in or out.

I am for open borders for all willing to learn the language, pass a background check and can prove they can support themselves. The rah,rah flag shit is about the biggest steaming pile of BS ever perpetrated upon people in world history.

If the US wants real economic growth it would open up it’s border to all who are willing to abide by the above simple rules and eliminate double taxation of income.

        1. ProgressiveDelusionalCommie,

Your dear leader is a full on Commie. Just wait if he somehow steels the election. It will come out in full force and your wet dream will be realized.

We conservatives will vote him out though.

        2. The word is iPad auto-type you communist, statist, dictator loving, ahole.

If that’s all you have is an iPad typo you are as pathetic as we already know.

Now go crawl back into your mommy’s basement you ahole.

        3. I can agree with much of what you say, but you ruin it with the “tea bagger” and other unnecessary insults. Same goes for the “commie” and “libtard” insults. You people are blaming far too much on the individuals who have been president. But I suppose it creates hits… and everyone jumps in. How many other countries have the kind of open borders you are suggesting, and how is it working for them? OK, back to Apple.. oh wait, this story wasn’t even about Apple 😛 So we are supposed to tax and over regulate the rich and then do what when they leave? Post our complaints here?

    2. Even The BJ in Chief gets it by now:

Bill Clinton thought so little of President Obama — mocking him as an “amateur” — that he pressed his wife last summer to quit her job as secretary of state and challenge him in the primaries, a new book claims,

“The country needs you!” the former president told Hillary Clinton, urging her to run this year, according to accounts of the conversation included in Edward Klein’s new biography of Obama.

The title of Klein’s explosive, unauthorized bio of Obama, “The Amateur” (Regnery Publishing), was taken directly from Bill Clinton’s bombshell criticism of the president, the author said.

A new book says Bill Clinton implored wife Hillary last summer to challenge President Obama.

“Barack Obama,” Bill Clinton said, according to book excerpts, “is an amateur.”

According to the book, Bill Clinton unloaded on Obama and pressed Hillary to run against her boss during a gathering in the ex-president’s home office in Chappaqua last August that included longtime friends, Klein said.

“The economy’s a mess, it’s dead flat. America has lost its Triple-A rating . . . You know better than Obama does,” Bill said.
Bill Clinton insisted he had “no relationship” with Obama and had been consulted more frequently by his presidential successor, George W. Bush.

Obama, Bill Clinton said, “doesn’t know how to be president” and is “incompetent.”

      Full article here.

      1. So this begs the question… if Obama were to start receiving blowjobs from an intern would that elevate him to the status of “Pro” in Bill Clinton’s eyes?

        HAHA

    3. @First 2010, Then 2012

Not that it actually makes a difference who wins in November, but Obama has a second term in the bag. After all, he “got” Bin Laden.

On top of that, the Republicans have been sundered by infighting. None of their candidates are particularly strong, either.

So look forward to four more years of this particular empty suit. But hey, here’s hoping the next one will have an elephant on the lapel.

      1. The teabaggers campaigned on Jobs, Jobs, Jobs and what have they done?
Passed thousands of bills/ordinances from local to Federal banning abortion 2,3,4,5,6,7x over. Banned Sharia law and other important stuff for the terminally paranoid.

Now they want to strip the social safety net so not one dime will be pulled from the clutches of the military/industrial complex. Seriously.

And of course, cut the taxes of the wealth even further and transferring the burden to those who work for hourly wages.

        Just remember this:
Over the last 5 decades private employment grows more under Democrats and government employment more under Republicans. Wall Street makes more under Democrats, workers earn more under Democrats.

        http://www.bloomberg.com/news/print/2012-05-08/private-jobs-increase-more-with-democrats-in-white-house.html

      2. “He Got Bin Laden”, No “he” didn’t. The US military did you freaking ahole!!!!!!!

Barack Hussein Obama speech, Sunday, May 1, 2011:
And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta, the director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our war against al Qaeda, even as I continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat his network. Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by my intelligence community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden. It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground. I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan . And finally, last week, I determined that I had enough intelligence to take action, and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice. Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad , Pakistan .

Hubris (hu·bris), also hybris, means extreme haughtiness, pride or arrogance. Hubris often indicates a loss of contact with reality and an overestimation of one’s own competence or capabilities, especially when the person exhibiting it is in a position of power.

George W. Bush speech after capture of Saddam Hussein:
The success of yesterday’s mission is a tribute to our men and women now serving in Iraq . The operation was based on the superb work of intelligence analysts who found the Dictator’s footprints in a vast country. The operation was carried out with skill and precision by a brave fighting force. Our servicemen and women and our coalition allies have faced many dangers in the hunt for members of the fallen regime, and in their effortto bring hope and freedom to the Iraqi people. Their work continues, and so do the risks. Today, on behalf of the nation, I thank the members of our Armed Forces and I congratulate them.

        1. President of the US should not try to claim responsibility for a heroic military operation. Only a complete ego-maniac, commie like Maobama would make those kinds of statements.

But of course, a drone like you can’t comprehend reality. You are a bottom feeder quivering.

        2. He didn’t take credit and that is nothing, nothing, compared to the all out assault on the US Constitution and US in general that you liberal-Statists dish out every waking second.

Who cares about some poster that said mission accomplished!!!!

Maobama is the one droning on and on about how he single handedly killed Bin Laden.

While Jay ZEE and Beyonce are twittering from the Oval Office chair. Maobama secretly left them sit in his chair and hang out in there. Pathetic!

    4. Do you know where your tax money goes? Let me tell you Baba… definitely not your pocket! Nor your country’s pocket! It belongs to the middle-man…

Do you know who owns the Treasury? Not your government! Not you either! You just owe them as much as you hold bills or hold loans.

I hope you get tired of this slavery and stop being the car wash clown. I hope you stop mocking each other with your political heroes… Commi/Democrat/Republican/etc… all are bunch of puppets on the stage for you to stay where you are and do what you are told, and buy you are you are sold.

The real change should happen within you.

“The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” – Gil Scott-Heron

    5. You won’t be partying in November, F10T12. What may be “unimaginable” to you is the only logical choice for many Americans. The Republican party’s nominee-to-be is essentially a giant “just wait until 2016” sign. Romney is a collective sigh and shrug from a fractured and fractious political party.

I welcome true and reasoned fiscal conservatism. But tax cut and spend is a disaster, and the people who have promised “free” government benefits through the power of tax cut-fueled growth have been exposed. FYI: Deficits *do* matter and the rest of us knew that a long time ago.

If you believe what you post, then you should be very, very worried. In fact, I recommend a pre-emptice exodus for you and your ilk. Run away now, doomsayer!

      1. I recommend you move to North Korea so you can be with people of your kind, Queen Smell.

We will be partying temporarily when you libtards lose in a landslide this November.

Then the horror of cleaning up your mountainous disasters starts.

  2. Don’t let them back in – You want freedom you have to pay for it.. Goo riddance. Now if we can stop giving financial aid to illegal’s that would be great…

    1. Whatever –

Most “illegals” probably pay a higher percentage of taxes than you or I do, so stop your crying. They pay payroll taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, utility taxes, gas taxes, use taxes, and on and on and on.

Since so many take low-wage jobs, we probably owe THEM money as part of the Earned Income Tax Credit. Get over it.

        1. Of course they do. It just makes a much smaller percentage of disposable income.

Lower income wage earners pay “proportionally” more.

    2. @Whatever

You have to pay for freedom? WTF?? I thought the US Constitution acknowledged certain freedoms—free speech, the right to free assembly, to bear arms etc, etc as inalienable rights. Oh, that’s right: successive governments have robbed you of your Constitutional rights to the point where’s not worth the parchment it’s written on. The Founding Fathers must be turning in their collective graves.

      =:~)

      1. And what benefit would that be:
1- Getting felt up at airports or irradiated just to fly?
2- Being born into the most violent culture in the developed world?
3- Being a resident of a culture in free-fall due to the paranoia of the willfully ignorant, uneducated and their exploiters?
4- Being a member of the county carrying more per capita combined personal and government debt than any country in the world?
5- Living under a legal system that has stated that corporations are people, money is speech and arrests/confines law abiding citizens for peacefully protesting the government?

        1. Ummm.. corporations are collections of people who make up a business…. people can be greedy acting corporately or as individuals… they can also do good things either way. The term corporation as a faceless person-less entity would not have the capacity to feel greed, lust, or philanthropy for that matter. Apple is a corporation. The people who work for Apple design, build and sell some amazing products. I get the corporate greed argument, but some people, somewhere, are making the decision to act a certain way. Regulate fairly and they will become better. Over-regulate and they will dry up or leave.

  3. The land of opportunity is screwed again, not by high tax rates but by greed. Once this low life leaves the country that gave him the opportunity to become so wealthy, he should not be allowed back into the country ever again. Now ask me how I really feel!

  4. I say tax the dumb shit before he gets the money as it was earned as a result of being in the States and as an American.

Thanks Canada Mark for your explanation which once again exposes First 2010, Then 2012 for his myopic/retarded and downright wrong view of how things work in his own country.

  5. This is what you get when you elect an inexperienced empty suit statist to the U.S. Presidency.

Reading a teleprompter well shouldn’t be the qualification for receiving your vote, dunces.

Failed ideas are failed ideas are failed ideas.

    1. Surely your pea-brain must realize that comments like this are embarassing even to most Republicans or even Democrats who do not particularly care for Obama. Certainly this is laughter material for us commies..errr… Canadians.

At least tell the truth. Are you the ‘other’ personality embedded in ‘First 2010, Then 2012’ brain that emerges now and then?

      1. His comments are uneducated, but one point is true: Obama was and is sorely unqualified to be President. He was barely a Senator and a community organizer before that. He had no experience running anything: not a business, not a city/municipality, not a state, and missed about half of his votes in the Senate.

Bush and Clinton were both successful governors before being elected. Bush 41 was in government service for decades, including VP. Reagan was governor.

That brings us to Carter, who, like Obama, had very little experience beyond being a successful peanut farmer (very successful), and general nice guy. Look what happened. Same is happening with Obama; in fact, the similarities between the Carter and Obama administrations are rather frightening.

        1. Ah, but now he has three years of experience, and with lots of measurable successes, even in the face of a Republican party who from almost day one has operated in the principle “I hope he fails”.
The economy was in free fall before the 08 election, it has at least bottomed out and not totally melted down. All of this with not cooperation from the Republicans in any way.

        2. The results of the 2010 midterm elections, before which the Democrats controlled both houses and the Presidency, tell you the opinion held by the majority of Americans about Obama’s “successes.” Mr. Obama seems to have experience in only two things: Hype and Blame, which are a far cry from “Hope and Change.”

By all means, tz, vote for Obama, chanting “Forward.”

          Over the cliff.

        3. It’s not great with you liberal-tards in charge and doing everything in your power to destroy it.

We conservatives will be putting a stop to that in November you little, pathetic, LEMMING!

        4. General nice guy? Sure, but Carter served on the first nuclear subs in the Navy. He was also the Governor of Georgia. Yeah, I guess doing well at the Naval academy and in the Navy, successful businessman and Governor amount to no experience.

        5. Actually Carter will do ok in the history books.

1- He attempted to ramp down the military industrial complex, canceling unnecessary crap like the B-1 bomber that Reagan promptly restored. Real world use of the B-1 showed Carter’s cancellation to be right.
2- The recession that cost Carter reelection was a choking of the inflation fueled by the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the oil shocks of the 1970’s. Carter tightened the budget and Fed Chair Paul Volker strangled the money supply. It killed the inflation after a period of recession that had been ongoing since the Nixon Administration.
3- Carter embraced a more multi-lateral foreign policy that paid dividends later. His emphasis on human rights caused major improvements in the lives of millions without the firing of one shot.
4- Carter warned the country about the economic and security risks caused by our then new heavy dependence upon imported middle eastern oil.
5- Middle East peace accords. 1st significant step down an ongoing path.
6- Cancellation of big budget pork barrel water projects built not for need- but greed.
7- The development of a whole new generation of weapons tat have served us well:
          F-16, A-10, M-1 Tank, Blackhawk UH-60 family,

          There is more.

        6. Farter was the absolute WORST president EVER!

That is until this BOZO stole the election!

Kenyan, illegal alien, Cocaine using, Liar! Phony Social Security Number, Birth Certificate, and hidden FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT COLLEGE RECORDS.

Maobama has dethroned Farter as the WORST PRESIDENT EVER!!!!!!

    2. Every presidentI have witnessed in my life dating back to LBJ used a teleprompter. It is testament to the effectiveness of the right wing propaganda/brainwashing media organizations that this lame talking point continues to bounce around in political discussions.

  6. OK, outraged right wingers – DO SOMETHING!!

Organize a nationwide right wing delete your Facebook account day to send him a message and derail the IPO.

Sitting around calling people commie and quoting Bill Clinton has nothing to do with this…

  7. While Facebook may be grouped in with Apple under the banner “big tech” – this has really gone way outside the realm of what I think MACDailynews should be… I get my general tech news elsewhere, and would like you guys to focus on your core strength: Apple.

    1. He hasn’t earned the income yet. He owns stock, which is appreciating tremendously. However, it’s not “income” as defined by the U.S. Tax Code until he sells the stock and receives money or other like-kind assets (a few jets, an island, a small country, etc.). So no taxes are owed yet.

  8. So I think I get it. You make billions off of a society and its labors and infrastructure, and its economy, and then take the money and run leaving that society that enabled your riches to fend for itself, because you are too greedy and selfish to pay taxes. Multiply this many time over, and this appears to constitute a small group of people who are literally sucking the wealth away from this nation, and leaving the collective rest of us poorer. This likely is a factor in the decline of the middle class.
The ones who spout the party line that “government is the problem” are the subset of billionaires who are immoral and criminal in their mentalities, and simply don’t want governments to restrain their ecocidal, genocidal, just plain evil behaviors.

    1. There is a very, very small number of people who would even consider doing this, regardless of the taxes they would have to pay. Plus, there are all kinds of strategies he could implement which would reduce his taxable rate from 35%-39.5% down to near 20% or so if he wanted.

The article stated that the guy wasn’t a U.S. citizen by birth, and he has been living in Singapore and plans to live there indefinitely. This decision probably makes sense for him, but for most millionaires/billionaires, giving up your U.S. citizenship is just plain stupid.

  9. people change their minds about things, like how much taxes they want to pay or where they want to live. just like monkeys.

unfortunately for Facebook, people change their minds and get bored of social networks and switch to new ones. I should say it is unfortunate for the people who invest in this multilateral pyramid scheme, it’s a sinking ship. but I guess you got to get on it, before you get off it.

    1. The Commies never have:

      1. Enough of other hard working people’s Money Alfie IV.

      2. Absolute power!

      We conservative hate you lemmings!

  10. So let me get this straight, in the article, it points out that next year the tax rate is set to go from 35% to 39.6%. This is President Bush’s fault? He will have been out of office for almost 4 years when taxes go up. Keep blaming him, that is a good idea.

This is perfect example of what conservatives talk about. 35% of $3 Billion is a lot of money (over a billion), while 39.6% of $0 still equals $0. Go ahead, raise the “Buffet” tax on the “Rich” or “1%” and see how many stick around. President Obama can’t be to blame for any of this, you have to be kidding me. Why doesn’t anyone on the left ever believe the Government is ever “greedy” when they take away money earned by individuals that went out, came up with an idea and made there own way in this world? It is truly the government that is greedy, not the man in the article. Wisconsin figured out how to lower taxes, have a $154 million surplus instead of a $3.5 Billion deficit and did not reduce government services at all. Walker, Best governor ever.

    1. Do you oppose ALL taxation? If so you are just an anarchist and want to see everything implode into the dark ages. If not then pick a number you think is fair. Now I can call you greedy and argue that rates should be half that.

I just don’t see how this can be argued as tax = bad & lower taxes always = good. It’s all about where that compromise should be. Taxes are at historic lows, especially on the uber-rich. So WTF are all you drones going on about? Do you sincerely think you are being overtaxed, or are you all just upset that you are taxed at all and feel like the USA runs on prayers and the wind off of flag waving and chest beating?

      1. Historic lows? Really? A report was just released a week or so ago that the US now has the highest corporate tax rate in the world. High taxes change human behavior. As most conservative probably agree, market forces should dictate prices and I believe the same for taxes. At this point in our history, taxes are too high and the market is showing us that. Yet, Obama spends and spends and spends with no regard to how he is destroying our future. I actually shouldn’t say that, he does know what he is doing. He is destroying the capitalist system our country is built on by design. As the article points out, more people than in the past are denouncing their citizenship, or at least more now than in 2008. The article does not state the reason for the increase in denunciations, however, it has been widely reported that companies dealing oversee are holding there capital overseas as they do not want to bring it home to face the tax implications. Our taxes are too high. Yes, Should we pay taxes. But taxing the so called uber-rich, when a large percentage of the population pays nothing and even receives money when they pay nothing in is not right either. I don’t think I have ever heard a single conservative politician, talk show host or friend call for no taxes. However there are certain taxes, like capital gains and such that are killers to generate growth in our economy that should be reduced or abolished..

  11. Great move!

This guy is not interested in paying for spermacide or birth control pills to lib bitches going to one of the most expensive law schools in the USA. He is also not interested in paying the forthcoming taxmageddon that the Kenya ass is going to make everyone pay so he can get his Obama Care through. He is also not interested in paying for Holder’s antics to send weapons to Mexican gangs so they can turn around and kill a border agent. And he does not want to pay for wasteful giveaway food stamps to the lazy ass Americans who won’t get off their ass and find a job. He is fed up with Obama’s 5 trillion addition to the deficit and will have no part in paying it off.

Lived in Singapore for awhile. Enjoy it. Let the USA and it fat ass population bitch until the shit hits the fan.

  12. I don’t feel that renouncing his US citizenship to avoid taxes is morally right.

He came to the US, attended one of its best universities and joined up with a fellow student to form FaceBook. Now that he’s going to be extremely rich, why should’t he return a portion to the country that helped him make that windfall.

He got the benefit of our emergency services, police, transportation and telecom infrastructure and many other things that are paid for by taxpayer dollars. And now he’s going to take his money and say to the US, “adios, mother fracker”.

    1. It’s the entitlement society. He is entitled to the good from being in America, but has no responsibility to put a portion of his gains into the pot for the common good. Sounds like some kind of a welfare queen to me.

  13. HAHAHAHA! After reading “$96 billion” I knew it had to deal with “reduce his tax bill” even before reading it!

You go Eduardo! Why in a Capitalistic society would you create a financially rewarding endeavor only to have some doofus who has never worked a day in his life in the private market, espousing a backwards philosophy and base his entire existence on a government-centric world who could legally steal your money and funnel it to his cronies on wasteful projects that fit his ideals which in the end turn out to be failures. Just like him!

    November 2012!

  14. Just goes to show that national affiliations are a matter of convenience for the wealthy. The only thing that matters is getting and keeping more money. Eduardo Saverin was never an American to begin with. No loss.
