“We’ve gotten word that Walmart has dropped its prices on the AT&T iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S in its retail stores,” Alex Heath reports for Cult of Mac.
“Without any notice, the price of the 8GB iPhone 4 on AT&T has dropped from $88 to $34,” Heath reports. “Also, the white and black 16GB flavor of the iPhone 4S on AT&T is now being offered for $114, down from the original $188 listing.”
Heath reports, “The new prices apply for AT&T upgrades and new activations. Last year the iPhone 4 dropped to $114 at Walmart in September — one month before the iPhone 4S was announced in October.”

Although I agree that the UPS story ties in well with this, it would be EXTRAORDINARILY out of character for Apple to break with a 5 year old tradition of waiting at least a year before introducing a new model of ANYTHING (iPad, iPhone, or iPod).
On the other hand, maybe Steve’s departure has given Tim Cook the freedom he needs to just that: update ASAP. While it’s true that this would be a great knock-out punch to the Galaxy SIII, the main argument against this is that it dramatically reduces Apple’s return on investment: using the same design for 2 years running (3G/3GS, 4/4S) maximizes the return on the huge R&D they spend on coming up with these designs.
I guess time will tell…

Well, my point actually was that they wouldn’t normally release any FASTER than the 1 year cycle. I think the exception of the 4S was that it (and/or its OS) were not ready in time.
Taking longer is disappointing, but not exceptional.
However, as I wrote (see below), a June release would actually just put them back on their traditional early-summer release schedule…
no, but at the quantities Apple is shipping now (tens of millions per quarter) that’s a much smaller issue.
Apple now sells more iPhones a month than the original iPhone sold in its product life.

Yes, I agree- I forgot that we’re in May already! Dropping the prices a month before release would mean a June release- 2 years after the iPhone 4. This would actually put them back on schedule of their traditional June-July release for new iPhones.
For what it’s worth: the common rumor here in Seoul is that the iPhone 5 will be announced in June, prompting Samsung to release the Galaxy 3 early in May (yesterday) . The logic is that Samsung has a good sense of Apple’s schedule and would have held off its own release to allow further development if Apple were planning on a fall announcement. Hope it’s true!
Being as Samsung makes a lot of parts for the iPhone, I guess they would (or should) know. Seems like a reliable rumor to me…
Considering the fact that Samsung released SGS2 at the same time last year and “iPhone 5” was delayed until autumn, this is not indicator of anything.
Just passing on the scuttlebutt. Samsung’s other big ftime factor is the London Olympics and originally (it is rumored) the wanted to premiere the GIII a bit nearer to the opening, but moved things up.
Tim Cook is fine tuning his launch strategy, so that Apple announces a product a few weeks before the first delivery, then has a ton of first day buyers (pre-orders mostly), then starts cranking out product such that the ship time never falls below 24 hours. The trick is the balance between pre-built inventory and steady-state product rate. The intro date will be WWDC. The timing on the 4S was a fluke. Apples intro dates have nothing to do with the actions of other actors like Samsung or Google.
I agree- and probably so does Jake_in_Seoul: it’s actually Samsung who is reacting to Apple’s imminent release of the iPhone 5, not the other way around (as I had originally postulated).
Nonetheless, this should nicely dent Galaxy S III sales…
Timing of iPhone 4S was super successful, because calendar Q4 is the best time to release any product. iPhone should keep this new schedulte and set record sales every calendar Q4.
This will be a nice big F-U to Samsung from Tim Cook. This is his chance to firmly establish that Apple’s his baby now.
If you consider October 2012 to be soon, then I agree. iPhone 5 won’t be coming out any sooner than October. But, it will probably be announced in the summer.
Don’t tease me like this!! I’m still using a 2.5 yr-old 3GS and am SO close to just getting a 4S. I’m in a market where I have to wait 45-60 days after release anyhow and figured I would just pay the ~$135 penalty to break contract in Nov/Dec it were released in October. Now I don’t know what to do….
I’m still using that phone also. I never liked the square feel of the 4. so hopefully the 5 feels like the 3GS in the hands. I’ve been out of contract for some time. I almost bought the 4s , but just like the 3GS better

That doesn’t mean they live in a van down by the river. But obviously it’s more important to you to keep up with the Joneses to avoid the perception of being “cheap” so do whatever works for you.

Walmart.com does show that there are no iPhone 4. the price on the iPhone 4S is still $188.

June, October, whichever; I’m ready for an upgrade from my iP4 at the end of this month, and my g/f was bugging me about getting a new iPhone to replace her Nokia dumbphone, and to match her iPad and Apple TV, but I told her to hang on, ‘cos new shiny things were coming soon. If June turns out to be the announcement date, she’ll be ecstatic!
I’m in the same boat as you. My contract ended last month and I have been itching to upgrade my iPhone 4. June…October…either way, I am ready!
