Chinese Foxconn workers protest wages, threaten to jump off roof

“Workers at a Chinese factory owned by Foxconn, Apple Inc’s main manufacturer, threatened to jump off the roof of a building in a protest over wages just a month after the two firms announced a landmark agreement on improving working conditions,” Reuters reports.

“The protest happened in the central city of Wuhan at one of Foxconn’s plants,” Reuters reports. “It involved some 200 workers, the Hong-Kong based activist group Information Centre for Human Rights said.”

Reuters reports, “A spokesman for Hon Hai Precision Industry, the listed unit of the Foxconn group, said the protest concerned workplace adjustments and involved workers new to the plant. He said it was not a strike. ‘The dispute has already been settled after some negotiations involving the human resources and legal departments as well as the local government,’ the Taipei-based spokesman, Simon Tsing, said.”

  1. By all means, let them jump off the roof. Come on down, asswipes, jump! Let me film it for Entertainment Tonight. You low class scum intimidators trying to blackmail an US company that does not employ you.

After we scrape you guts off the fence and pavement, we’ll send a bill to your family to pay.

      1. Great Point MDN. Robots, ah robots. I love them. They will hopefully one day put an end to Union SCUM and Liberals destroying the economy and all that is great every chance they get.

Just wait they will want to tax the robot, fight for the robot to be paid a “fair” wage, and more. These lefties are full on LUNATICS!!!!!!!!!

Robots will hopefully completely ruin their end run at communism!!!!

        1. And I call perkele on that. Bring in robots, kill off jobs, jobless buy more guns and go postal, crime rate rises, jobless get jobs as hired guns at prisons, more people get killed, end of jobless “problem.” Mitt must be giddy with joy at the outcome, nation becomes white as a bleached pair of undershorts, women become objects to be sold at slave auctions, every white guy is suddenly as rich as a Saudi prince, wow, what a dystopian future Mr. Suomenmies has for the US. A regular Adolf Hitler it seems.

        2. ONLY A LEMMING WOULD MAKE A PREDICTION LIKE THAT!

Robots would be the best thing ever to happen to replace Union Scum!!!!!!

You see commies we know your wet dream is to corral us all up and force us all to do whatever the chosen few of you tell us to do.

          Go To Helllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Oh horseshit. I don’t remember any stories of threatened suicides in America’s labor strife. Threatening suicide is a total load of crap. Let ’em jump.

        1. There were people as late as the early 50s that lay down on the train tracks and tried to prevent autos and parts going in and out of car manufacturers.

  2. “Negotiations” With personnel and local government officials. I bet that was fruitful. Personnel to fire them. Government officals to escort them off the premises and offer them free lodging for a few nights.

  3. Obviously as the story originates from Reuters, it’s obligatory to talk about Apple, but we’re these workers actually working on Apple products ?

Foxcon make stuff for many companies and when there was previously a story about Foxcon workers threatening to jump, it was invariably reported as Apple’s workers, when in reality those workers were assembling Microsoft products.

    1. turns out that they weren’t working on Apple products after all, but we’re making stuff for Microsoft.

Needless to say, you can always rely on Reuters to embellish the story and make it look like it was Apple’s fault.

  4. I’m not so sure threatening suicide is a good way to get a raise. My boss would have said “Wait let me get my video camera”. “Can you aim for the picket fence?”

  5. They’ve figured it out. They’ve seen how the American media went ga ga over lies. They’ve seen how just nuts all of our kooky protestors are and they can use it, exactly the way people in this country use it.

You can bet this will be gleefully reported by the New York Times etc. They will be wet with anticipation.

  6. Am I missing something? Perhaps there is a culture issue here that I simply can’t understand. To threaten to take one’s life because of working conditions seems drastic. Then again, I am thinking from a totally western perspective. My initial reaction says, quit if you don’t like the demands of work. But at the same time, do these workers feel like they have no alternatives? Very unusual indeed.

  7. Hmm, sounds suspiciously similar to this incident:

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2012/01/12/chinese-foxconn-workers-threaten-mass-suicide-over-xbox-pay-dispute/

… which was in Wuhan, involved about 200 workers at one point, was over termination and unpaid wages resulting from that (HR and legal departments, as mentioned in article) and… get this… was for a Foxconn plant making Xboxes, NOT Apple products!

If this is indeed the same incident that Information Centre for Human Rights is referring to, but carefully wording it to imply it has anything to do with Apple (other than it being a Foxconn factory), they lose huge amounts of credibility.

    MDN, investigate further!

    1. Yeah, I found it suspicious that nowhere in the story did it explicitly say that the factory in question manufactured Apple products. The story just keeps bringing up the fact that Apple uses Foxconn and expects you to jump to that conclusion.

  8. Pretty sad….

But, I am further saddened by the lack of empathy from MDN and some commenters above.

empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

    1. Barf. What one does reading your retorts.
Ungrateful is what they are. They fair better than average workers in china. Look at the lines when jobs open up.
Or better yet, go there yourself and protest with them as I’m sure your #occupy buddies are back in mummies basement again.

      1. Maybe they have it better than others in their country. However, conditions in their country are pretty pathetic. As you have no clue what they are really going through in their daily lives, your responses sound very callous, thoughtless and cold.

I’m not saying what they are doing is right Just that the comments on this page (by MDN too) are very callous.

Feel free to barf if that makes you feel better.

        1. I don’t recall American workers threatening to jump off buildings during the industrial revolution.
I do know that American workers are dying to get such crappy jobs so as I’ve stated before, bring ’em home. Sure, well pay more, but so what. Apple can cut some margins to make them here, just not in the equally communist state of California, where businesses have been forced to leave due to lib governing. It’s working out great. Just ask the POTUS.

        2. You are missing my point completely.

Your (many of the) responses/reaction to this event are callous, uncaring, thoughtless, and cold (border on evil).

I can’t imagine cracking a joke when someone is in such bad straits whatever the reason.

          Again, barf all you want…

        3. Wrong dip shit. These people are pathetic. Let them jump. If they don’t like their job they should quit and go find a new way to make a living. cb, you are an idiot.

        4. @Real Deal

“Idiot?” Are you in 3rd grade?

You can’t even respect my opinion? Who really is the idiot?

Yes, those people are pathetic, but so are people like you who care so little for other human beings.

        5. @Randolf
So, not being cruel is liberal? I said nothing in support of those people actions (nor would I under any circumstances). I just don’t think it is right to make fun of them…

At least I feel no need to call you names.

Maybe you guys should start going to church. I get the feeling you are headed for hell…

    2. Threatening suicide for better wages is a play for the sympathy of the stupid and gullible. It’s a sucker bet.
Being played for a sucker does not make one noble.

  9. Id like to see wages improve in China. It would certainly help America be more competitive in the global marketplace. China’s current monopoly on cheap and abundant labor is taking a huge toll on our economy.

Granted, nobody wants to see prices for consumer goods increase, but more than that, I don’t want to see America deminished. That’s happened enough in the past three years.

    1. I agree with you Pirate. Conditions in China need to improve and their price of manufacturing should rise. It will make some prices out of reach, but it will enable manufacturing to exist in some other places in the world.

        1. NO you’re not sane. You are a libtard and that has been proven to be a serious psychiatric disorder. So you see, WT-Commie, you are the one in need of serious help and most likely the rubber room.

  10. American medias spoiled them and trying to teach them American value! That was the wrong move and china being there for 5000 yrs, they really dont need anyone teach them anything.

Let them jump! There are 1000 Of ppl waiting to take their jobs! I thought they just recently got a raise!

  11. “Workers at a Chinese factory owned by Foxconn, Apple Inc’s main manufacturer, threatened to jump off the roof of a building in a protest over wages…”

    That’s wiggidy, wiggidy, wiggidy, whacked.

The Mac Daddy’ll make you… jump, jump!

  12. Give them shares. Help them grow their wealth. WHY is that so difficult? Why do we hate people so much that they MUST REMAIN POOR? Freedom through economic security is the most just and peaceful freedom known to man. If Apple can invent great technology, it can invent pathways out of economic repression, too. I love Apple and want it to be mare than its current status of being THE leader in developing the human condition, too.

    1. It’s concerted effort by Maobama and Holder to direct the MSM to try to make Apple look bad so they can then start confiscating their $$$$$$.

      Pretty Obvious!
