“Workers at a Chinese factory owned by Foxconn, Apple Inc’s main manufacturer, threatened to jump off the roof of a building in a protest over wages just a month after the two firms announced a landmark agreement on improving working conditions,” Reuters reports.
“The protest happened in the central city of Wuhan at one of Foxconn’s plants,” Reuters reports. “It involved some 200 workers, the Hong-Kong based activist group Information Centre for Human Rights said.”
Reuters reports, “A spokesman for Hon Hai Precision Industry, the listed unit of the Foxconn group, said the protest concerned workplace adjustments and involved workers new to the plant. He said it was not a strike. ‘The dispute has already been settled after some negotiations involving the human resources and legal departments as well as the local government,’ the Taipei-based spokesman, Simon Tsing, said.”

Foxcon make stuff for many companies and when there was previously a story about Foxcon workers threatening to jump, it was invariably reported as Apple’s workers, when in reality those workers were assembling Microsoft products.

Am I missing something? Perhaps there is a culture issue here that I simply can’t understand. To threaten to take one’s life because of working conditions seems drastic. Then again, I am thinking from a totally western perspective. My initial reaction says, quit if you don’t like the demands of work. … which was in Wuhan, involved about 200 workers at one point, was over termination and unpaid wages resulting from that (HR and legal departments, as mentioned in article) and… get this… was for a Foxconn plant making Xboxes, NOT Apple products!
If this is indeed the same incident that Information Centre for Human Rights is referring to, but carefully wording it to imply it has anything to do with Apple (other than it being a Foxconn factory), they lose huge amounts of credibility.
MDN, investigate further!
Yeah, I found it suspicious that nowhere in the story did it explicitly say that the factory in question manufactured Apple products. The story just keeps bringing up the fact that Apple uses Foxconn and expects you to jump to that conclusion.
