Study finds link between number of Facebook friends and ‘socially disruptive’ narcissism

“Researchers have established a direct link between the number of friends you have on Facebook and the degree to which you are a ‘socially disruptive’ narcissist, confirming the conclusions of many social media sceptics,” Damien Pearse reports for The Guardian.

“People who score highly on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory questionnaire had more friends on Facebook, tagged themselves more often and updated their newsfeeds more regularly,” Pearse reports. “The research comes amid increasing evidence that young people are becoming increasingly narcissistic, and obsessed with self-image and shallow friendships.”

Pearse reports, “The latest study, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, also found that narcissists responded more aggressively to derogatory comments made about them on the social networking site’s public walls and changed their profile pictures more often. A number of previous studies have linked narcissism with Facebook use, but this is some of the first evidence of a direct relationship between Facebook friends and the most ‘toxic’ elements of narcissistic personality disorder.”

    1. …this sounds like a job for (ta-da!) SuperRitalin®!…yes, now you too can raise your child in a easy-to-manage, cationic state with the complete blessings of the American Medical Association and all your pals at the journal of Personality and Individual Differences…don’t let your babies grow up to be narcissistic cowboys.

  1. Bullshit. Like Daisey’s fabrications, this narrative too perfectly fits the biases and prejudices of he aforementioned “social media critics”.

Correlation is not causation. All you can draw from this is that narcissists act in narcissistic ways. Thanks, Captain Obvious.

    1. Couldn’t have put it better myself. I wonder how the overwhelming desire to publish blatantly obvious research like this rates on the Narcissus Scale?
The constant need for peer approval, and continual praise from outside, seems like exactly the same sort of behaviour to me.

  2. Now instead of just ignoring certain friend requests, I’ll first send them the message:

“I would really like to be your Facebook friend, but I’m trying to avoid the pitfalls of narcissism. Have an awesome day!”

  3. Oh like those individuals with 4000k plus friends that continually post things like: “Living the dream” , “I love my life” , “Every day is an amazing day for me” , “I can’t wait to start a full productive day at the Cafe for Narcisst” , “My significant other loves me so much or I live my life for them” , “I have so many clients to meet today, my life is awesome”. Something like that. LOL

  4. considering that Facebook was “founded” and retains a megalomaniac CEO with a complete lack of real social skills, why is this surprising? Facebook is an ad agency dedicated to stealing whatever data you are willing to type. nothing more.

      1. the degree to which one is an asshole is not necessarily related to the financial windfall one may have fallen upon, inherited, stolen, or otherwise swindled.

I know it just seems that the more money one has in offshore bank accounts, the more that person acts like an egotistical asshole, but technically, money isn’t a prerequisite. Some people, Zuck included, are simply born with the gift.

  5. I don’t have all that many friends on Facebook, just a hundred- but most of the bas****s ignore me and my pics and videos no matter how many opportunities I give them to comment! SOB’s! Those narcissists have a hell of a lot of nerve- I politely “like” their crap, their photos of their ugly kids and dogs, and they think they’re too good for me…

    Facebook is a dangerous drug.
