Apple Inc. took top honors for the first time in an annual brand evaluation survey of consumers by Nikkei BP Consulting Inc.
Scoring 90.5 points for total brand power, Apple catapulted from 11th last year. Its iPad tablet computer and two other key products also made the list for the top-40 brands.
In a survey of businesspeople, the U.S. technology giant took second behind Toyota Motor Corp..
The Brand Japan 2012 survey had a consumer market category targeting 1,000 brands, as well as a business market category for 500 brands. It was conducted online over November and December of last year. Overall brand power scores were calculated based on the responses of some 52,000 people aged 18 and older.

I think we all saw it coming sooner or later.
Wow! The Japanese are famous for their loyalty to Japanese products. This is huge!
So true. This means, if apple successfully penetrates the chinese market next, there will be huge amounts of money to be made 😀
Comment from Brian X of Wired? Hello? Remember you ruined a certain Japanese tech writer reputation with your report?
There you have it, and I think the Japanese know something about quality.
I suppose it helped Apple that a number of formerly excellent Japanese brands have shot themselves in the head over the past year: Sony, Toyota, Honda, Panasonic (Matsushita)…
I can follow you on Sony & Toyota, but what are you referring to with Honda and National/Panasonic(Matsushita)?
Honda had some massive recalls this year, and got nailed with terrible reviews of the new Civic model. Panasonic (formerly Matsushita) has been suffering from profit losses recently.
Honda is finally getting some stiff competition from the US brands, and (amazingly) Korea, but they’re still the worlds most reliable brand to boot.
No idea about Panasonic.
I admire Panasonic and was upset to hear about their recent losses. I suspect they’ll pull out of it.
