“So much for ‘heatgate,'” Melissa J. Perenson reports for PCWorld. “We’ve all seen the reports this week indicating that the new iPad runs hotter than its predecessor, the iPad 2. But does the new iPad run hotter than other tablets?”
“To answer that question, we took our trusty thermometer in hand and ran a series of tests that pitted Apple’s latest tablet against the iPad 2 and two popular Android tablets–the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime and the LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1,” Perenson reports. “Though the new iPad did run hotter than the iPad 2, the difference wasn’t great. And in repeated lab tests of the new iPad, we could not replicate the disturbingly high temperatures that some sources have reported.”

“More important, the new iPad was not dramatically warmer than either the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime or the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE, even though its battery has a substantially higher milliampere-per-hour (mAh) rating than theirs do,” Perenson reports. “Despite all of the media attention over the iPad’s (and other tablets’) operating temperatures, the issue seems to be overblown.”

Hmm, so the new iPad has a more powerful battery, and barely runs hotter than the crappy Android tablets. Let’s see if THIS story will get press everywhere. I doubt it.

“milliampere-per-hour (mAh) rating”
mAh means milliampere-hours, not milliampere per hour. That is, it can do so many hours with so many mA, not so many mA per hour. In other words, so much total charge in the battery, but no information on how much power is used at any time. Lower mAh can still have more watts and more heat, but then with correspondingly shorter life per charge. Melissa does not know enough physics.
Indeed, this article displays a dismal lack of understanding of basic electrical concepts. Unfortunately, that lack of understanding is far too widespread.
I used the new iPad without a case for about a week, and it barely got warm after hours of continuous RR2 HD usage. Compared to the Macbook Pro, the iPad is like a glacier.
However, I found that a full cover does increase the temperature of the iPad. At the advice of SteveJack, I decided to buy a Zoogue case for my new iPad. As you would expect, the aluminum case cannot dissipate thermal energy as well when it is enclosed in a leather shell. But I removed the iPad after a while and it wasn’t hot.
No complaints from me so far. The new iPad is an incredible device – a mid-1990s supercomputer in a highly portable form factor with an incredible display.
