Beleaguered Nokia claims Apple royalty-free nano-SIM promise is hollow

“Nokia in a mid-Monday response dismissed Apple’s royalty-free offer should it define the upcoming nano-SIM card format,” Electronista reports.

“The Finnish company told IDG that it was ‘not aware’ of any Apple patents essential to its nano-SIM card,” Electronista reports. “The seemingly benign gesture was just Apple trying to ‘devalue the intellectual property of others,’ a Nokia representative claimed.”

Electronista exports, “A vote is due on the standards on Thursday. Devices using the new SIM might not show until 2013 at the earliest, as its benefits would still require ground-up design to make the most of the newly-saved space.”

  1. Nokia wants it’s own nano-SIM strategy just as Apple wants it’s own nano-SIM strategy. How is Apple any more selfish than Nokia? That’s just plain old-fashioned competition. So what if Apple devalue’s other’s IP? Google stole other companies’ IP for Android and is able to get away with it on a large scale.

    1. @laughingboy,
Only that doesn’t really devalue the IP of others. If I contribute to a project, but decide to donate my time or resources, that doesn’t mean I am saying the contributions of others are worth less or that they should also donate their time or resources.

Apple is simply saying, whatever IP or patents we add to the pool will be free to license. Actually, it is Nokia which is then devaluing their OWN IP — they are saying that others will look at Apple’s offer, then look at Nokia’s and wonder why they should pay anything to Nokia. That tells me Nokia has nothing of real value to offer in comparison. Samsung had no problem trying to tell Apple that they should pay Samsung 150 dollars per iPhone for some standards realted IP (2.5% of retail value of final product). That wasn’t reasonable, but if Nokia actually contributes to the standard, then they are allowed to charge something reasonable.

In the case of Google, not only do they devalue the notion of software development in general, they steal other’s stuff first, then make it freely available, then declare themselves Robin Hood.

  2. It is funny since just last week Nokia said that they afraid Apple will take money for its patented design.

And now when Apple said they will offer their patents free, Nokia all of sudden says that Apple is bad again since they want to undervalue patents in this field.

  3. “Devices using the new SIM might not show until 2013 at the earliest, as its benefits would still require ground-up design to make the most of the newly-saved space.”

I can think of a company that would be able to design and release a brand new phone incorporating nano-SIMs before 2013.

This is the real reason Nokia is whining; speed to market, not IP.

  4. I heard that the Chevy Nova did not sell well in Spanish-speaking regions because in Spanish “no va” means “does not go.”

Is there a language in which “Nokia” means “does not sell”?

      1. Sorry but those cheap Korean cars are better today than any car out of America and now on par with those coming out of Japan. They routinely take 9+ marks in Safety. Fit and quality assurance is now backed up by a 10yr or 100,000 mile Bumper to Bumper Warranty (highest in the industry).

As far as Nokia goes, they have routinely been rated tops in Quality and even their cheapest phones can at least with stand a 3ft drop, unlike any iPhone or iPad!

Now what Nokia, Motorola and others are saying, is that in this game, they’re holding a Royal Flush (hold Essential Patents, which Apple has none of), so ETSI won’t have a Nano Sim Standard without them. Notice that no other company is complaining about Nokia statement either and you’ll realize that Apple be the GMC of gadgets, but they don’t own the patents or ideas that make them WORK!

And so these Apple Nano proposals have no gas in their tank to go anywhere on!!!
