“A manufacturing change in the new iPad appears to have broken compatibility with certain Smart Covers, as well as some third-party cases that use the iPad’s built-in magnets,” Sam Byford reports for The Verge.
“From video and photo evidence posted at Mark’s Hangout, it appears that the new iPad now uses a polarity-sensitive sensor to wake the device from sleep upon opening the cover, meaning that the magnet must be correctly aligned — apparently early Smart Covers were initially made with the magnet in question facing either way,” Byford reports.
Byford reports, “Newer Smart Covers don’t exhibit the problem.”

Got conned into buying an iPad 2 case that was guaranteed to work with the new iPad. Now I’m 600 km away from the store where I bought it.
Call up the store. Explain the situation. Send in the one that doesn’t work and I’m sure they’ll send you a new one that will.
I have an Orange smart cover, the ones apple doesn’t make anymore. Ordered it the same day as my iPad 2, works perfectly fine on my new iPad.
Awesome. I really like the orange Smart Cover. I’m glad it is still working for you.
Bought an Apple smart cover and an InCase “SnapCase for iPad 2” (which covers the back) and they both work perfectly. Great combo, BTW.

Meant to say they both work perfectly on my new iPad 3. 🙂
I’d second the Snap Case as well. I was surprised that the iPad 2 version fit on the iPad 3. That and the Smart Cover really work well together…as does the AppleCare+ warranty!!!
My smart cover went from my old iPad 2 to my new iPad seemlessly ….
If it doesn’t work, cut a slit in the cover over the battery. Take it out, flip it over, and reinsert. Glue the slit closed. Now you have an iPad3 compatible cover.
