Consumer Reports’ bombshell: New iPad runs hotter than predecessor but ‘not especially uncomfortable’

“Responding to numerous customer complaints, Consumer Reports has issued a report saying Apple Inc.’s new iPad runs hotter than its predecessor but that it was ‘not especially uncomfortable,'” Ian Sherr reports for The Wall Street Journal.

“The new iPad can get as hot as 116 degrees Fahrenheit while performing processor-intensive tasks such as playing videogames or downloading files,” Sherr reports. “That temperature is 13 degrees more than the iPad 2,” Consumer Reports said.”

Sherr reports, “The results did vary a little when the device was plugged in, but Consumer Reports said it didn’t matter much. ‘During our tests, I held the new iPad in my hands,’ Consumer Reports‘ Donna Tapellini said in a statement. ‘When it was at its hottest, it felt very warm but not especially uncomfortable if held for a brief period.’ Consumer Reports‘ statement about the iPad’s heat didn’t mention whether or not the publication would recommend the device.”

MacDailyNews Take: You mean to say that even Consumer Reports‘ massive investigation and oh-so-scientific testing couldn’t turn up anything? The American Association of Class Action Ambulance Chasers are going to be mighty disappointed. No beach houses paid for by Apple this year!

Meanwhile, the subscribers of Consumer Reports await the announcement of the publication’s meaningless recommendation with full Depends.

  1. 13 degrees? Really. Would that higher temperature, if it truly was that, be so detrimental? I am sure there are other devices that could and have spiked higher than that amount.

    1. Um, 116 degrees is no walk in the park. It’s “not uncomfortable if held briefly”. That says a lot.

Is it a game changer? No. But it’s worthy of mention and let’s face it, pretty darn hot.

      1. Yes. If its true then it’s true. Don’t know if it’s a game changer but it sure has the fanboys upset. But let’s face it, fanboys are hardly objective. Must be tough in their sheltered little world. Dumbshits.

        1. Well I’ve owned Apple products since the early 80’s and the stock for many years. Options these days as opposed to stock as it’s much more profitable at least has been for me dumbshit. Unlike something like you would come up with, I don’t claim to have purchased AAPL at $7. I doubt you even know the price of AAPL let alone how to purchase same? But really, being a fanboy is nothing to brag about. Fanboys have no objectivity regarding their obsessions. Thus they are immature. I’m a fan, supporter and owner of alll things Apple. Have been probably long before you were born, dumbshit. Hey, I think your mom’s calling you for lunch.

        2. Oh, and I’m using my new iPad to post this dumbshit. Works just fine. Just sharper than my original iPad and iPad 2. I have used Mac’s in my profession for 30 years how about you? But I guess you get the employee discount at Taco Bell? Nice! AAPL $609.02. My April 21 calls are ready to harvest. Tell mom you want her to upgrade the dial up.

  2. After rigorous, scientific testing — since our announcement this morning, we used it for most of the day without any gloves at all — we have determined that the new iPad gets warm.

  3. I’ve been using mine all morning. Cool as a cucumber.

All of the usual news outlets have jumped on the bandwagon, of course. But this isn’t about FUD really anymore. It’s about media ratings. Pure and simple.

  4. Yeah, CNBC was pounding the table with the outrage this afternoon, Mandy the Aussie, and Brian the Irishman, were expressing the outrage and wondering if there would be a “recall”, as Brian kept saying it was “significant”.

  5. ‘When it was at its hottest, it felt very warm but not especially uncomfortable if held for a brief period.’

Thanks for that scientifically-tested, double-blind controlled testing result information, CR.

  6. After having used mine since launch day, I’ve found it’s a little warm to the touch, but you don’t even notice when it’s in a case. And for the CNBC anchors to talk about it being “hotter” than previous versions is hyperbole. It’s a little warmer than my original iPad. It’s not “hot.” It hasn’t bothered me in the least.

    1. I have a clear (orange actually) plastic case on the back, with my orange smart cover. Dont notice any warmth at all.
Back still feels cold after a 2 hour movie, except where my hand was anyway..

    2. You should know by now that people are going to refuse to use a case which would be the simplest solution. Instead, they’d rather whine and complain and start a class-action suit because they don’t want to take their hand away from the hottest part of the case. This is human nature, to try to punish itself when there are plenty of easier paths to take. Being uncomfortable to the touch is a relative feeling depending upon the users’ touch sensitivity. I’m sure on a hot summer day, humans would come into contact with many uncomfortably hot objects. Put your hand on a car that’s been sitting in the summer sun and you’ll know what hot actually feels like. Even the car seats are hot, hot.

      1. “Even the car seats are hot, hot.”
I have heated leather seats in my car. Last summer when it was 95 outside… I turned the passenger seat on “by accident” 😉 on my brother in law. cranked that sucker up as high as it goes.
Took him almost 30 minutes of making sure the AC was going before he figured it out lol.

CR will now rate my car as having “uncomfortably Hot” leather seating when they hear that.

    1. If some of these people just spent a few minutes a day doing wrist curls with some light weights, they’d never even notice the few extra grams of the iPad. This is a sad, pampered world we live in. Far too many couch potatoes using high-tech devices. Honestly, over a short period of time, wouldn’t the body adjust to a few extra grams of weight.

      1. My actual (sarcastic) point was that difference in weight between the previous iPad and new iPad is negligible (unless you use a scale), just as the difference in “warmth” is (even more) irrelevant (unless you use a thermometer). 😉 But someone will probably make it an issue, when the “warmth” issue fails to stick.

  7. While I was at one of the Apple stores this morning I held about 2 dozen iPads and checked for heat discomfort. All were warmer than my iPad 2 but none were uncomfortable and certainly none burned the skin. This is just another overplayed issue.

  8. The iPads that run hot were the Canadian Edition iPads, they have built-in heating coils so we can use them even in winter. How they ended up in the wrong hands is inconceivable.

  9. This is like making a big deal over the new video card running slightly hotter than the last one. It’s expected, more powerful hardware runs hotter. Plus, there’s more LEDs in the display thus the display runs abit hotter. So it’s a “no duh” thing and the only reason their even bringing this up is because they can sell this story to uninformed people (who also ignore that the bottom of laptops can get much hotter when the CPU or GPU get stressed. I hear about it all the time on the job).

They even say its not uncomfortable to hold even when it’s stressed (like when playing games), so wheres the big deal in this?

Just as long as this doesn’t get blown rediciously out of perportion like the whole “Antennagate” thing was.
