“Pixels pixels pixels. Battery battery battery. Speed speed speed,” John Gruber writes for Daring Fireball.
“That’s the new iPad, a.k.a. (for comparison’s sake) the iPad 3. The retina display, significantly faster graphics, and the potential for startlingly fast cellular networking — all with the same renowned battery life (and standby time) as the original iPad and iPad 2,” Gruber writes. ” Also, the camera has gotten a significant upgrade — but while the new camera is decidedly better than the one in the iPad 2 (and infinitely better than the no-camera in the original iPad), I really doubt there exist more than a handful of people in the world who would upgrade from the iPad 2 to the iPad 3 for the camera alone.”
Gruber writes, “If you’re familiar with the experience of switching from the old iPhone display to the 4/4S retina display, the experience of switching to the new iPad display will prove familiar. It is astonishingly good… Reading on the big retina display is pure joy. Going back to the iPad 2 after reading for a few hours on the iPad 3 is jarring. With bigger pixels, anti-aliased text looks blurry; with smaller pixels, anti-aliased text looks good; but with really small pixels like these, anti-aliased text looks impossibly good — and what you thought looked pretty good before (like text rendered on older iPads) now looks blurry.”

The best part of the review is how he says Apple with each release is clarifying the original intent of the first version. It’s a gradual process of fully realizing the first version. The size and form are perfect, how do you refine it do it’s better?
Other companies could learn from this. They scrap their ideas and start from scratch with slightly tweaked versions.

Though I have become impatient and expect some radical quantum leap forward… I do realize Apple is serious and has maintained improvements perfectly to plan.
iPad(new) is the iPad first envisioned hence the name.

That’s probably the best analysis of the ipad and Apple product design I’ve ever read …. Thank God for Apple, Steve Jobs … and Tim Cook and gang.
Since using the first iPad, moved to my wife, I’ve thought they will eventually put an LCD on both sides of the iPad with a flipping cover.
The “backside” will be geared for typing maybe on a slightly lower resolution LCD and have a keyboard below the active LCD portion of the screen.

As the case with iPad(original) hatching it before technology could get the screens and battery life just right, was worth the risk.

I might be dreaming but if iOS can make (vector graphics) the core engine for icons and buttons,; wouldn’t that help make the retina screen – forever the best screen possible – and – Apple would not have any issues to app fragmentation?

You are so right. I have an astigmatism, and I can read DF only with Safari Reader. I’ve complained to him, but he pays no attention whatsoever. I think he must be a typography fanatic, which to my mind is worse than a political fanatic of any stripe (other than mine, of course 😉 )
If he was a typography fanatic he would NEVER go with white on grey. Plus he wouldn’t choose a san serif face.
Maybe John secretly consulted with Microsoft’s Metro UI design group…?

Since iPad(new) is not the dubbed the Pro, I believe only Apple can make a real iPad Killer… running some complete rebuild of OSX (11.8 ? ) fully on some Tablet form then calling it iPadPro.
