“Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook doesn’t think much of his competitors at Hewlett-Packard and Dell, slamming his rivals in the personal computer business in front of shareholders at Apple’s annual meeting Thursday,” Brian Caulfield reports for Forbes. “‘Arguably we are the only company that is innovating in the personal computer space, and have been for some time,’ Cook said.”
“Tech tracker Canalys — which factors sales of tablet computers such as Apple’s iPad into its totals — said last month that Apple became the world’s largest personal computer vendor during the fourth quarter of 2011, with 17% of the worldwide personal computer market,” Caulfield reports. “No surprise, then, that Apple Chief Executive took an opportunity to do a little bragging Thursday, comparing Apple’s revenue growth over the past year to its competitors.”
Caulfield reports, “For the fiscal year ending in October, Apple posted $108 billion in sales, up more than 60% from the year-earlier. “‘That $108 billion was $43 billion more the year before, this [growth] is more than HP, Dell, Nokia, HTC, Google, than RIM all put together — not each one, but in the aggregate,’ Cook said.”

MacDailyNews Take: Asked for responses, Dell claimed to be “pretty proud” of unspecified “innovations” while HP cited a CNET “Best of CES” Award for PCs, a show that Apple does not attend.

Word.
It’s about time somebody came right out and said this, and I’m glad that it was Tim Cook who said it. The rest of the industry should be ashamed of themselves.
“Arguably we are the only company that is innovating…”
Sorry, Tim. I disagree that this is “arguable”.
I love that Mr. Cook is keeping this aspect of Apple at the forefront. I hope this fact constantly drives Apple to viciously hunt down and attack every instance of IP theft by other companies hoping to freely ride on Apple’s coattails.
(I say, “other companies”, because I cannot bring myself to type “other tech companies”, nor especially “Apple’s competitors”, for the obvious reason that Apple has no competitors, only copiers, imitators, and freeloaders.)
Apple: What we always knew it was and would be!
Excite-o-meter:
Microsloth = Zzzzzz
Dull = Zzzzzzzzz
RIM = ……………….
” while HP cited a CNET “Best of CES”
Wow, the best of the “The rest of us”
Or “The best of “Try to copy apple the worse you can”
Or “The best of try to guess what apple is going to come out” show?
or.. just the “Electronics Freak and desperate Show”
they also claimed to have the 1st UltraBook for buisness ! That’s a solid claim, as all of us on MDN know Mac’s are just toys 😜
Why innovate when you can copy and follow Apple’s lead?
following Apple’s lead is no longer working, these guys are getting slaughtered in the market even with Apple knockoff devices!
Why can’t Tim be man enough to just say it: “Apple won the PC wars, the also-rans just don’t know it yet.”
I think it is more accurate to say, “Microsoft won the PC wars, and now Apple is winning the post-PC wars.”
Windows shares are declining. Maybe the PC war isn’t really over, even though, I believe Steve said to Bill, “you guys won the PC war long ago”.
Perhaps Microsoft will evaporate – disappear completely – hence if OSX and MAC are still available there will emerge a clear winner finally.
Ha – thats my hope anyways.
“…Steve said to Bill, ‘you guys won the PC war long ago’…”
It’s called rope-a-dope.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rope-a-dope
The rope-a-dope is a boxing fighting style commonly associated with Muhammad Ali in his 1974 Rumble in the Jungle match against George Foreman.
In competitive situations other than boxing, rope-a-dope is used to describe strategies in which one party purposely puts itself in what appears to be a losing position, attempting thereby to become the eventual victor.
The other companies named here have NEVER innovated anything. Intel and AMD build the chips , MS built the craapy
OS, and thats the whole useless story.
When HP did get hold of a reasonable innovative product, WebOS, they threw it away. Dumb and dumber.
very true!
also, others develop HD drives, memory, graphics cards, screen technology, …
Dell and HP? beige boxes, black boxes, grey boxes…
Dell has these wired status lights that you hook-on to the back of a server’s cable management arm. When you make the light blink (so you can tell which server your using in a rack with many), the back light blinks too – innovation!
Seriously, though. After having used Dell’s server management tools (openmanage, etc), they don’t have a great UI – to the point that it’s easier to manage servers individually…
Raising my glass and tipping my cap to C1 and other long-time Apple aficionados 🙂
Darwinism’s inevitable “survival of the fittest” is going to be seen in real events over the next few years.
2019: Microsoft, running out of money, is saved by Apple.
Why you ask? To keep from being a monopoly and being broken up by the government. This could be a real possibility.
How weird would that be?
when this happens my friend, for your prognostication savvy, I owe you a beer. iCal it.
What makes you think it will take 7 more years?
If Windows 8 smells as bad as it looks, it may just take 5 years or less.
God, I’ve got a Dell/Microsoft ad, a Parallels ad and a VM Ware Fusion ad on this page. WTF? Microsoft is worried already.

Stupid dog put her head on my keyboard just as I hit send.
Oh well, as least she loves me. 🙂
I see a problem with Cook saying things like this. It is basically giving its competitors a hint of what to do, and egging them on to do it. Just like the “Only Apple can” do this or that is causing the competition to to say, yea? we can do that to!
