“Thousands of Micron Technology employees, industry figures and community leaders paid tribute to the chipmaker’s late CEO, Steve Appleton, at a memorial in Boise on Thursday,” Jill Kuraitis reports for Reuters.
“Appleton – a three-decade industry veteran, an avid flyer and a racing enthusiast who performed stunts at airshows – died after the small plane he was piloting crashed at an airport in Boise on February 3,” Kuraitis reports. “‘He was CEO, but on our level. We always called him by his first name,’ said Bentley Cleverly, 26, a manufacturing technician. ‘You can tell there has been a big change’ since his death, she added. ‘People are really missing him.'”
Kuraitis reports, “Micron, the only remaining U.S. memory chipmaker, is struggling to cope with depressed prices and flagging computer demand in an era of Apple iPads and smartphones.”

I am surprised at the lack of comments here. He was such a special individual, brainy, kind and loved by all, generous and humble. A great loss for his family, friends and employees. A prime example of a guy that was made of the “right stuff”.
This article was posted at 5:02pm. Many of us have jobs and depart work around that time for dinner and to transport kids, help with homework, etc. Five or six hours later I get a few minutes at the computer to catch up on stuff.
I knew people who worked at Micron. They liked the company. Perhaps if Micron attempted to align itself with Apple’s component needs, it would have a better chance of surviving. For that matter, perhaps Micron in its depressed state would be a good acquisition play for Apple – a local microelectronics foundry of sorts to complement Apple’s design experts.
RIP another Steve lost from the tech world
