How Apple took the lead on the environment

“Over the Presidents’ Day holiday on Monday, Apple quietly released a surprisingly detailed update to a report on its ‘environmental footprint,’ including plans to build the world’s largest private solar array and fuel-cell farm to power its massive new North Carolina data center,” Todd Woody writes for Forbes. “‘Apple is committed to pursuing energy-efficient growth by increasing our renewable energy participation to match the growing needs of our data center—through our own projects as well as partnerships with utilities and renewable energy providers,’ the company stated.”

Woody writes, “It’s quite a turnaround from Apple’s past public indifference to environmental concerns. Given the company’s other initiatives to slash its greenhouse gas emissions, Apple is emerging as a leader rather than a laggard on the environmental front.”

“Apple’s North Carolina facility has become the largest data center to achieve LEED Platinum status, the highest ranking for energy efficiency and other environmentally beneficial features bestowed by the U.S. Green Building Council,” Woody writes. “Back home in California, Apple disclosed that it has installed a 500-kilowatt biogas-powered fuel cell system at its Cupertino headquarters and purchased renewable energy for other facilities.”

  1. Apple’s also leading the way in manufacturer audits and improvements. (At least, other companies don’t make a big deal out of it if they also have supplier audits, etc.) I hope this doesn’t inspire the, “In China, Environmental Costs Are Built Into an iPad,” article.

  2. Apple was never a laggard. They just never participate in the PDF propaganda circle jerks that other tech companies engage in to deflect public scrutiny from what they actually are doing…

  3. “…It’s quite a turnaround from Apple’s past public indifference to environmental concerns.”

What is this asshat yammering on about? Apple has cut the harsh chemicals that it used to use in the production of their products, they’ve cut their packaging, the’ve including the planting of trees in their campuses, and they’ve lowered their energy expenditures.

    Sensationalism at its best (worst).

  4. Woody writes, “It’s quite a turnaround from Apple’s past public indifference to environmental concerns.

Apple is emerging as a leader rather than a laggard on the environmental front.”

Woody is a pecker. He obviously failed to perform any serious research. Apple has been active in improving its environmental responsibility for quite a while.

“Past public indifference”? “Laggard”? Compared to what companies, Woody? Pecker.
