FLA President: Foxconn factories ‘first-class; way, way above average’

“Working conditions at Chinese manufacturing plants where Apple Inc’s iPads and iPhones are made are far better than those at garment factories or other facilities elsewhere in the country, according to the head of a non-profit agency investigating the plants,” Terril Yue Jones reports for Reuters.

“The Fair Labor Association (FLA) is beginning a study of the working conditions of Apple’s top eight suppliers in China,” Jones reports. “In addition to Foxconn, FLA investigators will later visit facilities of Quanta Computer Inc, Pegatron Corp, Wintek Corp and other suppliers, who are notoriously tight-lipped about their operations.”

Jones reports, “After his first visits to Foxconn, van Heerden said, ‘The facilities are first-class; the physical conditions are way, way above average of the norm. ‘He spent the past several days visiting Foxconn plants to prepare for the study. ‘I was very surprised when I walked onto the floor at Foxconn, how tranquil it is compared with a garment factory,’ he said. ‘So the problems are not the intensity and burnout and pressure-cooker environment you have in a garment factory. It’s more a function of monotony, of boredom, of alienation perhaps.'”

  1. I thought I weight in on my opinion and knowledge. I was a corporate banker in Taiwan and Foxconn was one of my client. I have visit the plant many times in China.

Yes, the plants are all self-contain towns. Even the communist party has a headquarter in every Foxconn’s plant. The custom of China has set up shops at those plants. That means… once shippment is out of the plants, it has already clears customs. All that speaks about the sheer size of the operation there.

Now…. I have got to tell you. The factories are indeed clean and workers are treated nicely. Yes… 24 hours shifts… but hey, that’s 3 shifts in 24 hours, so each worker works at least 8 hours, just like any other job. In terms of pay, it is peanuts compare to US. HOWEVER, their pay is considerably higher in local standards. Even after all those suicides…. over 40000 people lined up at one of its plants to get a job.

The plant complexes have a number of restaurants serving different cousins from all over china. They each have their own entertainment center, gym, bowling alley… heck, just think of it as a town! It’s not up there with the standard of google. BUT trust me, it’s at least as good as any other top companies in China. You just can’t expect US’ Google facility quality in China. I mean they have got over 200000 people to feed at EACH plant!

For the suicides…. I don’t know…. Maybe working condition? However…. imagine…. if you are far far away from home and isolated (those workers cant afford living else where… those plants are often out of no where)…. doing the same thing day in and day out…. things like putting on stickers, packing things in a box, putting a screw on, snapping things together….. I mean…. that’s day in and day out….. I would want to kill myself too!

OK, now do they eat their cousins? Or is Foxconn also feeding their cousins?

      Or maybe you meant cuisines?

      Give me a frickin’ clue.

  2. MDN is always so fond of fox news and their fair and balanced reporting, right?

so maybe you guys should post this about the FLA also…

QUOTE: Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, executive director of SumOfUs.org, told Wired, “We’re hopeful that this is a step towards the solution, but it’s not even close to the solution itself. The FLA does not have a great track record of conducting effective investigations.”

    1. quoting sumofus vs FLA?

sumofus has shown that they are dead wrong with their petition and now are trying to save face with more B.s…

As far as I can tell sumofus never set one foot into Foxconn or even been to visit other China factories, FLA has a track record of inspecting all kinds of factories.

SumofUS based their petition on second hand news reports , this is what their website petition says ” Reporters have documented cases of deadly explosions at iPad factories”
      basing stuff on NEWS REPORTERS!!!!

were the heck is ‘investigation’? show me stats (comparison pay charts, benefits etc), audits, polls of workers.. (which apple has done vs @#$%$# sumofus’ ‘news reports’ )

basing stuff on ‘news reports .. like the NYT times (a biased and flawed account where one day after publication ‘sources’ were writing open letters to the paper saying they were either misquoted or not represented correctly). that’s CRAPAHOLA.

I trust FLA a heck lot more than sumofus.

dude you seem to believe SumofUS JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE ANTI APPLE and descredit FLA because after spending several days there their preliminary report is positive…

so much pressure is being applied to the FLA by haters now to ‘GO FIND SOMETHING BAD ABOUT APPLE’ or else ‘lose your credibility..’

acer, dell, asus etc have been building in Asia for years, for years they have 90+% of the PC market and why didn’t the bleeding heart morons complain then…
(I am so freaking tired of apple haters PRETENDING they give a rat’s azz about Chinese workers.. )
