“According to sources who have been reliable in the past, Apple currently plans to hold their iPad 3 announcement on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Along with the 2048×1536 Retina display, the iPad 3 will feature a quad-core Apple 6 system-on-a-chip, and possibly 4G LTE networking,” Rene Ritchie reports for iMore.
“Whether Apple would simply improve and optimize the current dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor found in the Apple A5 SoC, or go quad-core has been a lingering question, with 9to5Mac finding code references to quad-core but The Verge hearing otherwise,” Ritchie reports. “However, it sounds like they’re going quad-core.”
Ritchie reports, “4G LTE networking has been another mystery surrounding the iPad 3, with a compatible Qualcomm chipset becoming available, but international LTE coverage is still slim, and in some cases a year or more away. It sounds like Apple has 4G LTE lined up for iPhone 5 this October, but we’re still not certain if the iPad 3 will get it earlier.”

I hate to get caught up in this speculation, but my ipad 1 is up for replacement (and for sale, if anybody is interested), and a quad-core and a ton of RAM would rock.
I don’t know that my vision is sharp enough to really enjoy the retina display. I went from an iphone 3gs to a 4, and the screen is better, yeah, but I’ve not been BLOWN AWAY by it.
However, at 9.7 inches, the improvement really might SHINE…
Dmitri, if you are not blow away but the level of text detail etc of the Retina display, you really should consider playing with another smartphone for a few minutes or so, or go back to your 3GS for a few minutes. I can hardly look at the 3GS screen now when reading text without squinting.
Dittos. I wasn’t blown away by the Retina display either… Until I went back. My wife was using a 3Gs for some time after I got my iPhone 4. Every time I picked hers up, I WAS BLOWN AWAY. Her 3Gs display felt like something out of… Well, 2007.
Everything from reading web pages and email to PDFs… Especially fine text and details. Man, that display is like putting on a pair of glasses when you’ve had bad vision and didn’t know it.
LOVE the Retina display and totally DROOLING at the thought of having it on an iPad.
If this happens, my home theater remote control will look UNBELIEVABLE on it!!!

I never understood why people put so much stock in specs.
They are largely irrelevant as long as the user experience is preserved.
Try browsing the web on an iPad 1 running iOS 5.0 and tell me between Safari crashes that specs have nothing to do with the preservation of the user experience.
There rumor sites need to speculate about the most exciting possibilities, not the most likely. They want hits to their web site, and who wants to read about a “boring” rumor…?
People who read and believe are often disappointed, even though Apple did exactly what they should do at that point in time, given the state and cost of specific technologies.
If you don’t like the content, don’t go to the site. Plain and simple! You complain about speculative information, how dumb is that? Grow a pair and look for better speculative information. They are doing their job.
I’m not complaining about anything, and I do go to the site to read what they have to say. I’m simply saying that people who read those sites should understand the motivations of the folks who run them, and NOT be overly disappointed when reality does not meet these hyped expectations.
So, why don’t you “grow a pair” and be offended by (and complain about) other people’s comments… 🙂

Holy Crap Batman – all I want is a Retina Display and the device to support native 4K video in a sweet 9.7″ form factor, 4G LTE, less than 1 pound, and a battery that will last 1 week while I watch video and surf the web. Oh, and I want to fold it so it fits in my pocket and a laser 3D Holographic projector that I can push 1080P content on to a 110″ screen at 10,000 Lumens. Oh, and it should retail for $249. Did I mention quadrophonic speakers and it’s waterproof up to 300m.

Yep. Ignore the 4G hype (and that’s about all it is now, actually worse – slower speed, higher power). Wait for LTE-Advanced (and 802.11ac). No hype will be needed.
I just hope they fix this frakking keyboard. I type 70 wpm on a regular keyboard, but on my iPad 2, the spacebar doesn’t always type spaces, and word runtogether likethis.
Please… No 4G LTE/3G battery bashing kludge – do an 4G version separately. It’s at least 18months away here in UK and data rates likely criminally expensive.
Already have LTE via Hotspot-Both AT&T & Verizon. The AT&T is the better deal if you travel as the improved 3G in areas where there is no LTE is quite good.
In my experience, the Verizon 4G is faster than AT&T, but the enhanced AT&T 3G is widely deployed and spanks Verizon 3G. In many areas you will be on 3G with your new 4G hotspot. Full LTE rollout will take years.
IMHO a hotspot beats built in Telco Data as you can upgrade it without buying a new iPad and it makes a nice backup for home landline Internet. Last year storm damage knocked out the net for 3 days and the hotspot I had at the time (Verizon 3G) kept me connected.
