Apple today released AirPort Utility 6.0 for Mac OS X Lion.
Use AirPort Utility to set up and manage your Wi-Fi network and AirPort base stations, including AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and Time Capsule. See a graphical overview of your Wi-Fi network and devices. Change base station and network settings, or manage advanced features such as security modes, wireless channels, and more.
AirPort Utility 6.0 for Mac OS X Lion is available via Software Update and also as a standalone installer.

I’m not an Apple hater and this update does suck. I now need to figure out how to downgrade, took away options and there is less information available. Dumbing down indeed.

I tried that, but got prompted to close 6.0. I agree it is icky. My IPv6 is still working but I cannot control it now. So what was Apple thinking here? Where does Apple spell out that you need to run two versions of the AirPort Utility? Not smart to have lots of working features inaccessible from the official utility.
More ickyness 😉 – I ran 5.6 from my second iMac so I could see the MAC address of my Airport Express to give it an IPv4 DHCP reservation as it was running on IPv6 link-local (more ick). I saw that under the MobileMe tab the IDs I had updated to iCloud with the 6.0 app were gone. I updated the DHCP and rebooted, and then back in the 6.0 app the iCloud IDs were still there. I then exited and restarted the 6.0 app, and the Airport Express was no longer in the display. I got it back from the Other AirPort Base Stations button though. I think this was a bad decision on Apple’s part.
Software Update prompted me to download it, which I did. And then, upon bringing it up, it tells me my Airport Express is not supported and it download the old version. MAKE UP YOUR MIND, APPLE! http://pic.twitter.com/ZwZOAmmt

Airport Utility on my iPad shows my 3 routers (2 Airport Extreme (g band) used for music streaming, and my Airport Extreme (dual)) all with green lights. Yet, not the same on the desktop using Airport Utility 6. There, only the Extreme shows a green light. The Express units appear sans green light. A prompt says “this version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station.”. I can understand the “unsupported piece”, but at least give me my green lights back!
What’s really sad is that I had to use my iPad to downgrade the firmware on my Airport Extreme because I couldn’t do it with the 6.0 Airport Utility. The iPad app is more equipped than this OS X version!
I really hate how Apple is trying to turn OS X into iOS. I own an iPad BECAUSE I love my Mac, not the other way around.
