46% of Republicans believe tablets like Apple iPad will replace notebook computers

Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune, “The question put out there by Poll Position was: Do you think electronic tablets, such as Apple’s iPad, will eventually take the place of laptop computers?”

Among results (margin of error +/- 3%):
• Women (39.2% yes) were more skeptical than men (53.2%)
• 18-29 year olds (36.5% yes) were more skeptical than 30-44 year olds (53%)

    1. LEGAL vs. JOSE
      ILLEGAL

      You
      have two families: “Joe Legal”
      and “Jose
      Illegal”.
      Both
families have two parents, two children, and live in
      California .

      Joe Legal works in construction,
has a Social Security Number and makes $25.00 per hour with
      taxes deducted.

      Jose
Illegal also works in construction, has NO Social Security
Number, and gets paid $15.00 cash “under the
      table”.

      Ready?
      Now pay attention…

      Joe
      Legal: $25.00 per hour x 40 hours = $1000.00 per week, or
$52,000.00 per year. Now take 30% away for state and federal
      tax; Joe Legal now has
      $31,231.00.

      Jose
      Illegal: $15.00 per hour x 40 hours = $600.00 per week, or
$31,200.00 per year. Jose Illegal pays no taxes. Jose
      Illegal now has $31,200.00.

      Joe
Legal pays medical and dental insurance with limited
coverage for his family at $600.00 per month, or $7,200.00
per year. Joe Legal now has
      $24,031.00.

      Jose
Illegal has full medical and dental coverage through the
state and local clinics at a cost of $0.00 per year. Jose
      Illegal still has $31,200.00.

      Joe
Legal makes too much money and is not eligible for food
stamps or welfare. Joe Legal pays $500.00 per month for
food, or $6,000.00 per year. Joe Legal now has
      $18,031.00.

      Jose
Illegal has no documented income and is eligible for food
stamps and welfare. Jose Illegal still has
      $31,200.00.

      Joe
Legal pays rent of $1,200.00 per month, or $14,400.00 per
      year. Joe Legal now has
      $9,631.00.

      Jose
Illegal receives a $500.00 per month federal rent subsidy.
Jose Illegal pays out that $500.00 per month, or $6,000.00
per year. Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00.

      Joe
Legal pays $200.00 per month, or $2,400.00 for insurance.
      Joe Legal now has
      $7,231.00.

      Jose
Illegal says, “We don’t need no stinkin’ insurance!” and
      still has $31,200.00.

      Joe
Legal has to make his $7,231.00 stretch to pay utilities,
      gasoline, etc.

      Jose
Illegal has to make his $31,200.00 stretch to pay utilities,
gasoline, and what he sends out of the country every
      month.

      Joe
Legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time
      job after work.

      Jose
Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his
      family.

      Joe
      Legal’s and Jose
      Illegal’s children
both attend the same school. Joe Legal pays for his
      children’s lunches while José
      Illegal’s children
      get a government sponsored
      lunch. Jose
      Illegal’s children
have an after school ESL program. Joe Legal’s children go
      home.

      Joe Legal and Jose
      Illegal both
enjoy the same police and fire services, but Joe paid for
them and Jose did not pay.

      Do you get it,
      now?

If you vote for or support any politician that
supports illegal aliens…You are part of the
      problem!

It’s way PAST time to take a stand for
      America and Americans!

      1. The illegal alien question aside…

Where’d the extra $4000.00 come from and what is 30% of 52,000???

        “Joe
        Legal: $25.00 per hour x 40 hours = $1000.00 per week, or
        $52,000.00 per year.”

        25 x 40 = 1000 a week x 4 weeks in a month = 4000 x 12 month in a year = $48,000.00.

        52,000 – 48,000 = 4,000

        Also isn’t 30% of 52,000.00 = 15,600 which when subtracted from $52,000. 00 = $36,400.00?

        1. So you think that because there are 4 weeks in a month, there are only 48 weeks in a year? Remember the 52 week year? There are actually 4.33333 weeks in a month. They’re not all 28 days (7 days times 4 weeks). Some are 30, some 31, February 28 or 29.

        2. What the hell is wrong with you now, now, now????? Who cares about your flawed math and trying to create a red herring with it. The illegals are the problem. Liberals are the problem!!!!!! Vote conservatives in everywhere in 2012!!!!!

      2. Out of curiosity, I read the entire post. The amount of wrong information in it is greater than the amount of actual, correct data. Apparently, though, this is one of the more popular promotional texts out there with respect to the illegal aliens.

Vast majority of American public is politically completely ignorant. Texts such as these (that essentially lie to the public) tend to have disastrous consequences not just because they contain lies, but because people don’t know that they are untrue.

        1. Spoken like the true lawless, communist that you are Pre-DragQueen. How about we enforce our borders and kick the criminal illegals out and keep new ones from coming in. How about we stop letting Democrat politicians stir up jealousy and use their positions of power to steal hard working legal citizen’s private property and rights. Take responsibility for ourselves and not expect the government to make every freaking decision for us. You liberals are SICK!!!!!!!

        2. You are dangerous, not just to yourself, but possibly to other people (depending on how many actually listen to what you have to say).

What you’re saying makes absolutely no sense (Stirring up jealousy?? Stealing “hard working” legal citizen’s private property and rights???).

The purpose of good government is to ENFORCE the set of rules that the representatives of the PEOPLE have created, in order to have a civilised society. If you don’t like your laws, vote for person(s) who will change those laws.

When a country has 350 million people, it is impossible to have even one single law of the land that all would accept, especially in a country of such political social extremes (from the progressive, liberal places, such as San Francisco and New York, to ultra-conservative ones somewhere between the two). This is why there exists a concept of DEMOCRACY, where the will of the MAJORITY decides the laws of the land. And in a civilised society, such will is respected by all, even if they may be the minority that didn’t want them.

I’m not sure what was it I had said to offend you personally in order for you to twist my proper name into something that should be construed as derogatory…

        3. You liberals create a never ending litany of laws designed to make it impossible to not break the law. Making us all criminals. Conservative embrace the US constitution as envisioned by our founding fathers. Not how our government has been hijacked by liberals hell bent on turning the US into some type of communist “utopia”. The laws and tax system need to be majorly simplified. Liberals need to stay out of everyone’s hair and respect the rule of law (GM being confiscated by Maobama) and private property. Listen to how Maobama and every Commiecrat tries to vilify “big business”, “doctors”, “insurance”, “the constitution”, “capitalism”, “individualism”, and so on. You have your head in the sand dude.

        4. You have been mislead (not sure by whom, but nonetheless). Existing laws in America were NOT passed by “communists”, “liberals” or any other such fringe group. They were passed by members of parliament (in America, these are congressmen and senators), who were DEMOCRATICALLY elected in a country that prides itself on the transparency and fairness of its democracy. In other words, those representatives are supposedly truly representing the people who elected them into office. When people don’t like what they see, they elect someone else (witness the 2008 democratic takeover of the Senate and Congress, as well as the 2010 re-take of the Congress by the Republicans in America).

It appears that the head deeply stuck in the sand is actually yours.

        5. @Predarg – I’d like to invite you down to Texas. Let me show you around. We can visit Laredo or any other border town. Within minutes, you’ll be shocked and scared about the real war going on at our border with Mexico. Hopefully, we’ll both make it out alive.

The majority of Mexican people are law abiding and hard working. We can’t blame them for coming to America seeking a better life for themselves. Heck, that’s what our great-grandparents did. However, that doesn’t mean they should get a free ride or an easier ride. My great-great grandfather had nothing when he landed in America. He didn’t get handouts. He worked his tail off and made something of himself. He saved and invested.

Liberals continue to want to take from the rich to subsidize the poor, but for how much longer? When will the rich pay enough? The top 20% already pay almost 70% of taxes. How much more should they pay? Should they pay 80%? 82%? Or maybe, just maybe, they actually pay their share in spades. Maybe everybody else should start chipping in. Perhaps we should address all the free-loaders who are drunk on entitlement programs floating along thinking America is the land of opportunity while I bust my a$$ to pay their way and mine.

You liberals are all the same. You say the rich should give more, yet you don’t practice what you preach. Interesting that conservatives tithe in far greater amounts and participate in charitable giving in greater amounts that liberals.

        6. PreDRAG said Parliament so now we know it’s not from the US. Figures. Yeah, socialism is working so well over in Europe, communism has worked so well everywhere else. PreDRAG you have no idea what liberals have been patiently doing for the last 100 years to try to destroy the US. Putting activist, liberal judges in lifetime appointments to go around the law and constitution. Same with the myriad of government agencies that they have created that don’t answer to anyone but completely destroy the quality of life in the US and chances of the 99% ers from breaking out and being successful. RINO republicans are almost as bad or even worse because they aren’t supposed to behave that way. You really are a good little socialist PreDRAG. Keep your head in the sand.

        7. In what alternate universe are your silly assertions true? Not in this one! What we have here is a broken political system combined with a managed, totally unreliable mainstream press. Exactly how do the American people get rid of the charlatans and change the laws under those circumstances? Ridiculous!

        8. Predrag,
You have posted on here long enough to know not to get involved in a civil war. Most of these posters are the flotsam and jetsam of the ignorant masses that call themselves “Americans.” I am not certain where they came from, it has been a while since I have read MDN, but apparently MDN loves the page hits. Good for business, bad for any actual debate. If you read the rest of the posts you will see a once great country falling by the wayside. Declining with each passing year into oblivion. No longer can we debate like adults. No longer can we stand up on principle and show the world the moral high ground we once claimed (and I seriously doubt we ever had in reality). We never learned how to use a scalpel, only a sledgehammer. Well no matter. We stand on the edge of the abyss and look down, and unfortunately, not only is the abyss looking back through us, it is also laughing.

        9. Drackmere, You have to be kidding right???? What kind of an eight legged freak are you, seriously. What hell hole did you crawl out of. You sure have a mighty high opinion of yourself and your flawed ideology. From me to you, kiss my ass!

        10. “Vast majority of American public is politically completely ignorant.”

Would that explain our present Presidential predicament, Predrag?

Also, could you name the countries that are so much better informed?
I hope your place of origin is at the top.

        11. I won’t go into that debate with you, although I do have my outsider’s (and therefore, non-partisan) opinion of your current president.

As for my country of origin, with respect to political awareness, population is, on average, more aware of choices, platforms, as well as specific candidates. For many reasons, though, the choices don’t seem to be much more informed than the ‘uninformed’ political masses make in America.

        12. So are you running for office? Because that sounds like political double-talk to me.

But the again, we are probably too simple to understand anything more complex….

        13. @TowerTone,
If you did not understand what Predrag said, then I would have to agree that you are “too simple to understand.” Perfectly plain to me.

        14. drackmere
Did I say I didn’t understand Predrag? No.
But apparently you didn’t understand what I said,
which is kind of ironic, isn’t it?

What I implied is he didn’t want to answer my questions because Americans are too simple for his complex thoughts.

I know that’s not WHY he didn’t answer, because he NEVER answers those question, lest he leave himself open to criticism while he criticizes.

          I’m sorry, I’ve probably already lost you….

        15. @TowerTone
Except that is not what you said, or implied. Predrag did not want to get into a debate about ” our present Presidential predicament” which only shows he has some common sense since the debate would already start out on an uneven footing (being of course the “predicament”). However, if there is somewhere where you actually implied that Americans are to simple for his complex thought, please let me know, because obviously, your thought is so subtle it even eluded this simple American. As for his comment that Europeans have more political awareness than Americans. On the whole he is correct. The years I spent overseas showed me that they are far more aware of what is going on in their countries, as well as here, then most of the Americans I knew. As for where he is from? My guess is a Slavic country. At least the name is Southern Slavic. Does that help at all?

        16. Dude, Predrag gets in just about every political debate that MDN has, but I believe he won’t throw his support behind Obama anymore because he sees what a train wreck he has created, and he won’t out his country of origin because then it could be compared to America, which is inferior to just about anyplace in Europe, if I’m to believe his reasoning.

“However, if there is somewhere where you actually implied that Americans are to simple for his complex thought, please let me know,”

          OK
“Because that sounds like political double-talk to me.

But the again, we are probably too simple to understand anything more complex….”

Which was a reply to Predrag’s
“Vast majority of American public is politically completely ignorant.”

You may agree with Predrag, which is fine, but don’t jump on me because you don’t understand the intricacies of my argument.
All I try to do with Predrag is to get him to give more detail on his thought process as to how he arrives at his conclusions concerning Conservatives.

It is not that some of his ideas on handing America’s problems are wrong
it is that he bases the direction to solve them on silly notions of our history that are incorrect.

So when you speak of Europeans knowing more about us than we about them, it makes me hope that Predrag is not a template for their views.
Because, innocently or not, he is wrong.

        17. I suspect that we have differing views on what an intricate argument is. Stating “Because that sounds like political double-talk to me” to me does not actually imply, but rather connotes a standard of speech which we are all familiar with. As for understanding, I understood perfectly, I was simply pointing out what I viewed as an error in verbiage. However, for the rest, I must bow to your greater knowledge of Predrag’s political comments, since I have never actually read any of his other forays into that realm. I withdraw my initial comment and riposte, and withdraw from the field. In future, I will parse Predrag’s comments more closely.

        18. I am curious as to which particular Bond villain you are referring to. I am flattered (I think 😉 ) as I have always felt the the villains were much more charismatic then was Bond (perhaps, however, you did not mean it in that respect?). At least it is better than being called a commie and/or liberal in the same sentence. I still have yet to work that one out.

        19. Drackmere, I don’t like the commie part of you. But you do have an interesting way of putting things. So it was a compliment. Maybe you are an alien, the outer space kind. And I disagree with TowerTone below stating that calling someone a commie is silly. How about all of the BS the left constantly, 24/7, throw out at anything even the slightest bit conservative. I like the commie comments and people giving it right back to the liberal (commie wanabe) drones. They deserve a taste of their own medicine every now and then.

        20. Yes, but most of these mouth-breathing partisan parrots wouldn’t know that. MOST Americans that I’ve known have never never left the country save for maybe a booze filled trip to cabo, cancun or Jamaica. Hardly world view enabling trips. They will however proclaim loudly and rudely how great America is, but would be hard pressed to give you ten facts to back their assertions. Then they will call you names, hurl insults and generally show a lack of intellect. I’m really surprised their here honestly. With the critical thinking displayed in their politics, I’m surprised their aren’t using Windows and sporting Dell kit. Last thing, you neo-con mouth breathers STOP calling me a liberal, I’m no Dem, and I reject the two party corporate oligarchy America has become.

    2. Stupid is what stupid does

He’s retiring, but this needs to be part of a huge sweep of incumbents bellied up to the federal trough.

Can this guy get anymore stupid? If you know anyone in Conneticut, please send this on. I doubt if they need him anymore then we do.

Democrats Vote Down 5 Percent Rule

In a bid to stem taxpayer losses for bad loans guaranteed by federal housing agencies Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac, Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn) proposed that borrowers be required to make a 5% down payment in order to qualify. His proposal was rejected 57-42 on a party-line vote because, as Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn) explained,

“passage of such a requirement would restrict home ownership to only those who can afford it.”

I can’t add anything to this.

      1. I’m a legal American citizen and I must show my ID when:

I’m a legal American citizen and I must show my ID when:
        1. Pulled over by the police.

        2. Making purchases on my department store credit card.

        3. When I show up for a doctor’s appointment.
        4. When filling out a credit card or loan application.
        5. When applying for or renewing a driver’s license or passport.
        6. When applying for any kind of insurance.
        7. When filling out college applications.
        8. When donating blood.
        9. When obtaining certain prescription drugs.

        10. When making some debit purchases, especially

        if I’m out of state.

        11. When collecting a boarding pass for airline or train travel.

I’m sure there are more instances, but the point is that we citizens of the USA are required to prove who we are nearly every day!

Why should people in this country illegally, be exempt!!!!!

Why shouldn’t we guard our borders as closely as every other country in the world does?

        1. mccfr, you’re right. there’s no way on earth most of the welfare abusing class could be in on this game plan. couldn’t happen and the politicians couldn’t know it’s going on either. it’s going on big time and you and everyone in the US knows it.

    3. … but no where NEAR as silly as the political trolling that quickly took over the thread. MDN, how could you condone this blatant hijacking?
On Topic: My wife and I have an iPad 2 (LOVE it) and a MacBook (excellent!) that we use all the time. One will not replace the other, not for a generation or two, and they are used for somewhat different tasks. The iPad we take with us when we need to travel light. The MacBook when we know we will need to “work”. Can you “work” on the iPad? Sure. Is the MacBook light? Sure. But, when you need one more than the other, take the one you NEED.
So … NO … tablets will not replace notebooks – not any time soon. 2nd notebooks? Certainly. Notebooks for school-kids? Of course. Notebooks overall? Again … Not Soon.

        1. … calling the kettle “black”. Well, Ann, what kind of “liberal” do you think I am? Religious liberal? Fiscal liberal? Social liberal? Technology liberal? Please try to be more precise. And, perhaps, provide some supporting documentation, eh?
As for what I would censor, that would be what? The fact that the ridiculous Right (would the majority of the Right Wing please not take undue offense at a comment not aimed at them?) is happy to mis-state and twist the facts in order to make their whacko positions seem less out of touch with reality? I would point out the (choice of “nut job” or “liar”) Birther postings here as prime evidence.
Fact is, I’m a Fiscal Conservative and a Technological Moderate. And I believe in Law and Order – though the usual crowd who tout that philosophy frequently sub-vocalize “for everyone but me”. I strongly believe that traitors – Mr Cantor, for one – should be tried and, if found guilty, imprisoned. And that those guilty of running con games should see a similar fate. NOT get bailed out, NOT find a big bonus in their Christmas stocking. THAT would clean up Wall Street!
You Tea Baggers are SO predictable!

        2. What the hell are you talking about??? You act like you are so above everyone and make all kinds of crazy statements and call the Tea Party, the people against bailouts, as for bailouts??? You are a liar and a commie. Shove it talk about the pot. The left is the massive problem and everyone, including you, know it.

      1. Actually, only marginally.

21.9% of Independents “don’t know” or are – in your terms – “wishy-washy”

        18.3% of Republicans were “wishy-washy”.

        17.3% of Democrats were “wishy-washy”.

So Independents are 26.6% more “wishy-washy” than Democrats, and Republicans are 5.8% more “wishy-washy” than Democrats.

But so what? The whole survey is a ridiculous piece of flummery, because it doesn’t ask about or address the innate bias that will come from the way in which you use your existing computer.

For example, a tablet will never REPLACE my laptops because I use them for very specific commercial purposes. Gamers likewise – hence the scepticism with younger respondents who also know that they can’t run BitTorrent or whatever.

      2. Yes, you are right. People shouldn’t use facts and reason. Compromise is a dirty word. We should all take hardline positions and refuse to budge. SO much more would get done. We would have less conflict and war. An era of prosperity never before seen could be ushered in. Oh wait, back to reality..

        Mouth-Breather..

Save us your Rush “Oxy” Limbaugh moderate theory redux. We’ve heard it before, it’s still stupid and counter-productive.

        1. You rip Rush like there’s something wrong with him. I thought you liberal scum were the party of openness to every idea. You people are dangerous and scary. You hate Rush because he exposes your lies day in and day out. Rush is awesome and Rush loves Apple. Screw you communists.

    1. Like the constant talking points the commiecrats use. Why does Maobama have to read his talking points off a teleprompter for everything???? Where did Maobama get his social security number from???? Why does he hide his college records??? Why do all of the liberals in government and media seem to always come out on any given day with all the same talking points???? Planned and directed too perhaps??? Thank god for inquiring minds because it would be all over for the US if the commiecrats had their way. We are in the middle of a sneak attack from our enemies that has slowly been going on since the early 1900s. We will vote them out this November!

        1. Actually he did. Since Antoine had absolutely zero points to make in the first place. People no longer debate, nor know how to. It’s sad to see the the only “points” people are able to deal with are from Fox and the like. Murdoch has won, and we have lost.

        2. Good one Pap Smear. Fox, Murdoch, wow you commies really can’t stand the couple of outlets that don’t follow along with your pathetic communist agenda. SCREW YOU ALL!!!!

I’m surprised you left Bush, Cheney, Tea Bagger, Capitalism, Freedom, etc. You liberals ooze of absolute failure. Go to HELL.

        3. @ King Pin
Touche sir. I have never been called a Liberal, or Communist in the same breathe. Also your malapropism of my handle was quite clever.

I do wonder though, how those two particular constructs can exist together when one (Communism) is a theory or system of social organization which is based upon the holding of all property in common, where actual ownership is ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state, and being a Liberal simply means one is favorable to progress or reform.

I also wonder where exactly I stated any political view other than to point out that we have lost the ability to debate. A point I might add which has been thoroughly underscored by your particular response. I also simply pointed out that Fox and Murdoch were the most egregious offenders and purveyors of this lost art.

As for Bush, Cheney, et. al. Why would I bring them up when they were not germane to the conversation? Had I mentioned the hacking scandal would that have satisfied your particular need for partisanship?

I also believe that insults and violence are the last refuge of the incompetent. Simply having a discussion about a lost skill seems to somehow translate to a political leaning to you simply astounds me. I suggest you stop watching the current “debates” on television. They are simply not debates. However, if that is where you learned the art, then I can see where the problem lies.

        4. “being a Liberal simply means one is favorable to progress or reform”. Being a liberal is the road to communism or worse if there is anything worse. Maobama has put many communists in places of power throughout his government. I wonder why…… What the hell is the liberal “PROGRESSING” towards Drax. Why is that so called “reform” reform??? Reform from what? From capitalism to communism. You’re opinions are completely wrong. Anyone with any kind of intelligence can see plainly what is going on. November 2012 will be a great time to vote as many of the communist wanabes out of office.

        1. And yet you can tell that some posters are “flotsam and jetsam of the ignorant masses that call themselves “Americans”” by their avatars?

          Hmmm….

        2. No, simply by their statements and their complete lack of communication skills. I was actually inquiring as to how he knew since it was not obvious in any shape or form from auramac’s statement. Therefore, when asking for clarification about how he knew I covered all of the necessary areas which may have lead to that particular assessment and conclusion. Does that help?

        4. I will second Truth’s reply for the answer to “flotsam and jetsam” remark.

        5. Actually I agree that it is silly to call someone ‘commie’. And I understood your point.

But auramac is another long time MDN visitor, so people here have a pretty good idea where stands on a lot of issues.

What gets old is seeing unregistered names pop up with comments like that.

You never know if it is someone from the left or right speaking their mind or pretending to be opposite to throw more flame bait.

        6. It seems I have entered into the middle of long running conversations which I have no knowledge. However, basing my conclusion on what you have said, and what has previously been posted, I still see this as a lack of communication skills and an inability to hold meaningful dialogue. Also, allowing one’s own predisposition towards one’s political/social leaning to affect the conversation and into “flame bait” territory lacks sophistication on the part of the poster/responder. I see this simply as catering to the lowest common denominator which is not conducive to a healthy environment in which to solve problems.

    1. Obviously you are a liberal and it upsets you to be challenged. You just want to dictate and use the force of your elected officials power to silence your opposition and steal their property and make them slaves to the government through never ending taxes and fees. Screw you!

  1. Count me in as one of the enlightened 46%!

    Cars vs. trucks, people.

Tuesday, November 6, 2012 will be here before you know it! Landslide Party at my house that night as I expect the results to be crystal clear very early on.

  2. On another note …

MDN headline: 46% of Republicans believe tablets like Apple iPad will replace notebook computers

Article: Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune, “The question put out there by Poll Position was: Do you think electronic tablets, such as Apple’s iPad, will eventually take the place of laptop computers?”

Question: Are notebooks or netbooks categorized different than laptops? Just curious since one seems scaled down and the latter offers alternative desktop computing. Presently, believe the iPad will replace the low end while progressing forward to the high end.
