“The latest post on the Building Windows 8 blog talks about the OS’s new “push-button reset” and what it entails,” Woody Leonhard reports for InfoWorld.
“I can’t imagine a more graphic description of exactly why and how Windows 7’s legacy bogs down the design of a modern tablet OS,” Leonhard reports. “Microsoft chose to build its new tablet OS on top of its old desktop OS, and man, the chickens come home to roost on reset.”
Leonhard reports, “In the iPad/Android world, a tablet reset is roughly analogous to a Windows reboot. If your tablet isn’t working right, you reset it and (with extremely rare exceptions) it works again. The process takes maybe a minute… Microsoft posted some timing runs and says that a refresh takes 8 or 9 minutes, and a quick reset on a clean machine takes 6 minutes. Of course, that doesn’t include the time to re-install any legacy apps.”
“There’s a world of difference between the iPad/Android approach and the Windows 8 approach, and it can be summed up in one word: baggage,” Leonhard reports. “Windows 8 has to bring along all of that bloated Windows 7 code and set it to survive the reset.”

Microsoft, in trying to cram everything into Windows 8 in an attempt to be all things to all devices, will end up with an OS that’s a jack of all trades and a master of none (which, after all, ought to be Microsoft’s company motto). By the time this hybrid spawn of Windows Phone ’07 + Windows 7ista actually ships, one can only dream where Apple’s iOS and Mac OS X will be! For Microsoft, it’ll be more like a nightmare… From what we’ve seen so far, Windows 8 strikes us as an unsavory combination of Windows Weight plus Windows Wait… As if they needed it: More good news for Apple.

But do you hear that?… It’s the IT Dept. all over the business world singing, “Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!”…
But in the meantime, those steam-powered, fan-cooled brick-tablets will be providing you with plenty of heat–assuming the battery doesn’t run dry in 2.5 hours.
(And I’m only making up the “steam-powered” part.)
Too bad they aren’t really steam powered; at least you could cook some veggies while you wait.

Have you ever smelled steam coming off a steam engine? That stuff can give you serious heartburn if you steamed your veggies over it, what with all the oil and grease that gets mixed in through the moving parts. Trust an old hogger on this.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Is Microsoft aiming for a single OS (Windows 8) that will work on tablets and desktops? Didn’t they try that approach before? I recall owning an early IBM/Lenovo “tablet” with Windows on it. It didn’t work then. I assumed they would expand Windows Phone for their tablet OS.
I may be wrong but I suspect MS aims to keep the legacy code to somehow tie people into their eco-system regardless of which device type they choose. If that’s the case, I understand what they’re doing. It’s not very smart, but I get what they hope to accomplish.
Thank goodness for my OS X / iOS walled garden. The grass is definitely not looking greener beyond the wall.
Legacy Apps? Are you kidding? Legacy apps won’t run on ARM architecture. Microsoft hasn’t been very vocal about that FACT. A lot of people think they’re going to be able to run Photoshop and Crysis on ARM tablets- nope.
The apps don’t be come “legacy” until they are lost or license key is scrambled during the reboot process. I think the Wintab8 would make a great nacho warming tray. If your system is a slow, reboot and the cheezy mess should become less so. That is, until it congeals again. Yummy!
The “legacy baggage” thing is nothing but a Rube Goldberg device, combined with the old Jenga game and a house of cards.
It can’t go on forever, much as they want it to for obvious reasons. It will eventually completely collapse in upon itself.
It is kind of fun to watch though.
Worse than that! Stephen King’s next book will be “The Registry Horror”. In it, the town of Bangor, Maine is crippled by molasses-slow Windows 8 devices. Pestilence, starvation, and mob violence ensue.

The problem with Microsoft is that they see Windows as the center of the universe. Apple sees the experience as the center. They create the OS for each unique platform but surface a common experience.
Wait… You can still simply “reboot” Windows 8, right? You know, whatever will be the equivalent to “Ctrl-Alt-Del” (aka “three finger salute”) for a Windows 8 tablet.
That shouldn’t take “8 or 9 minutes.” Well, it’s Windows running on a tablet, so maybe it does…
Did MS not learn *anything* from the spectacular failure of their last forray into the tablet market (early 2000s)? They created the market and subsequently killed it all by themselves by releasing technology that served no real needs and solved no problems for (potential) customers. Not to mention that the hardware was REALLY crappy – huge, heavy devices (which was required to cram in all the hardware needed to run the shitty, bloated Windows Tablet OS) that no one *wanted* to use the things.
