Apple adds bogus AppleTVs, iPads, iPods and iPhones to iOS 5.1 beta 2 config file

“Earlier today, Mark Tweeted the amusing new file Apple put in iOS 5.1 beta 2 which includes a lot of silly references to [devices] that don’t exist,” 9to5Mac reports.

“As you’d probably expect, it isn’t going to stop developers from finding the special sause inside iOS 5.1B2. That doctored file is a high level file which is easily found,” 9to5Mac reports. “Developers which we are in contact with are already digging through the lower level stuff which remains the the feeding grounds for useful information.”

  1. I don’t really see the point in trying to dissect iOS code in search of future products or features. What really happens is that the stockholder gets screwed when uninformed reporters speculate based on rumors and the general public decides to stop buying because their waiting on the next big release.

If I had a dollar for every co-worker who told me, “so… I heard Apple was coming out with the SuperiPadMac thing next month”.
“Where did you hear about that? Did Apple announce it?”
“I read it on MSN, but yeah, I think Apple had a announcement or something.”
“No, they did not. Apple has announced nothing. It’s just a rumor.”
    “Noooooooooooooo…”

  2. Apple is hiding the ACTUAL new devices in plain sight. I think Apple does stuff like this a lot, to confuse (and amuse) the rumor mongers. But it’s usually used as clever (and believable) misdirection.

  3. But we already know pretty much when Apple will release the next whizzy thing – the same time they did it the previous year. Give or take a month or so. My phone contract runs out next June, so I could just go straight out and buy a 4S.
But I’m not, because I know that an iP5 will be released around September.
    Doesn’t take a genius…
