iPhone 4S ‘achieves the impossible’, takes market share from Android, accounts for 42.8% of all October mobile phone sales

“The Apple iPhone 4S accounted for 42.8 percent of all mobile phone sales in October and helped the iPad-maker to further increase its market share [in the UK],” Matt Warman reports for The Telegraph.

“The latest smartphone data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows, however, that three quarters of the sales were from existing Apple users upgrading their handsets,” Warman reports. “Just 14 percent were upgrading from the iPhone 4 to the newer 4S.”

“Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at the panel, said that overtaking Android, even for just a month, was ‘a feat many thought impossible for Apple,'” Warman reports. “Over the last year, Apple sales ranged from 20.8 percent to 18.5 percent, and then up to 27.8 percent. The most recent rise was at the expense of Android, whose share fell over October from 49.9 per cent to 46 percent.”

  1. Apple has only begun to inflict a world of hurt and damage on all mobile devices and operating systems not originating in Cupertino, CA. Now if only investors could figure that out by the obvious signs and financial proof instead of listening to inane anal-ists and their trite and irrelevant imblanced observations. Like iPod sales declining slightly (while everything else is on a sharp uptick). Every iPhone sale is also an iPod sale anyway. Dummies.

    1. As SJ once said, “Today we are introducing a brand new phone an iPod and an Internet browser……yes, an iPod an Internet browser and a phone. Are you getting it yet? It’s all one device, and we are going to call it iPhone”.

  2. Well, you could add me in the UK figures if only I could get my hands on one; O2 requires previous customer upgrade only (O2 pay-as-you-go doesn’t qualify), ‘3’ lacks coverage for my area, Vodaphone = rip off. Can’t face ‘Phones4u’. leaving Tesco mobile (best price but no visual voicemail) out of stock since launch.

  3. The only reason Android sales had been “up” prior to the 4S being released is because people were waiting for the 4S to be released, not because they had to upgrade their phone at any given time.

In reality, Android sales weren’t up, iPhone sales were down because anyone who halfway paid attention knew that a new model was coming out soon. And now that it’s here, the results speak loud and clear.

  4. AT&T is currently carrying 16 different phones running Android; Verizon is carrying *22*.

What the iPhone is doing to these knock-offs is beyond remarkable. Next time you see an Android sufferer on the street, be sure to laugh in their face.

  5. I’m proud to say that I contributed my small part to that sales surge. My iPhone 4S is my very first smartphone, and having it has been a transformative t experience.
Been a Mac user since 1996, so I knew ahead of the purchase that the iPhone would “just work.” I just never dreamed how WELL it would work.

  6. I heard the tools at MS say that their new MANGO HARD ON BIGG ASS SMARTPHONE is going to buck the current smartphone trend. They will do a pure cgi commercial using the three stooges to promote it. If you buy one you get a MANGO keychain or Buckwheat one that says “You’re OTAY! 😉

  7. The iPhone 4S I got about a week after it came out is my first smartphone as well. I’m also glad to know that I’m part of that surge having been a Mac user since the late-80’s. I held out as far as smartphones are concerned because I was in the office most of the time but I now have a new business which requires a lot of travel and that made me realize that I really needed one.

My new business prompted me to get the 13″ MBA as well as the iPad 2 and everything is working in sync so well together. And to stay in touch with the family I got my wife the 4S and the iPad 2 as well so that makes all the business travel easier to deal with. We are both blown away by how useful the iPhone is and made us wonder how we had managed to go so long without one.

Of course we were both aware of larger screen 4G LTE Android phones but getting the iPhone was a no brainer. The iPhone is just the right size as far as we’re concerned. My wife said she definitely wouldn’t want it any bigger than the iPhone and I tend to agree. And why would we want to sacrifice battery life for 4G when it’s not readily available and we almost never download or upload any data-intensive stuff? Plus, one can find WiFi to use a great majority of the time.

I just don’t get these Android people (companies, users, fanboys) constantly listing specs to say their phones are superior. That’s simply not where it’s at. It’s the human factor of the interface, the richness of the ecosystem, the smooth integration between the hardware and software and the pleasing consistency of the user experience that trumps anything else out there. Specs are less than half the story.

Well, their loss, not ours… 🙂
