YouTube adds hundreds of Disney, Disney·Pixar and DreamWorks movies for rent

“Today, the first of hundreds of The Walt Disney Studios movies from Disney, Disney·Pixar and DreamWorks Studios are coming to YouTube. These titles join thousands of full-length feature films from major Hollywood studios that already are available to rent at YouTube.com/movies,” Minjae Ormes, YouTube’s Movies & TV Marketing Manager, reports for The Official YouTube Blog.

“Fans of animated movies? We’ve got the beloved animated classic, Alice in Wonderland and the newly envisioned Winnie the Pooh,” Ormes reports. “Love Disney·Pixar? We have hits like Cars and Cars 2 all in one place. Up for a little bit of adventure? We’ll take you from the darkest depths of the oceans with all four of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, including the most recent blockbuster in the franchise Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”

Ormes reports, “Check back in because even more of the great Disney classics and new releases will be added in weeks to come, including our YouTube Movie Extras with behind-the-scenes clips, interviews, and more.”

  1. I don’t think that in most situations I would personally ever rent a Disney movie via iTunes. I would consider paying a *small* fee to be able to legally make my own mash-ups -which I could then post on my own iTunes account. I could imagine that becoming a popular thing; i.e. revenue stream.

Or better yet, just let me make the mash-ups at no charge, and they use it for advertising.

      1. Look Sucker I got your dude right here. Now why don’t you get busy doing what yo mama named you for.

YouTube Movies/rentals source is the Studios and they’re not offering anything but 480p.

You’re confused about two different areas of YouTube. You must be thinking about half the crap that is uploaded by the public.

  2. I don’t get it. Youtube already had a great business model that made them money, and gave up-and-coming talent a way to reach an audience and get the exposure they deserved. I worry that this new direction is going to ruin the great indie stuff out there, and I’m not talking about the millions of cat videos, but web series’ like The Guild and The Joker Blogs, and entertaining personalities like Phillip Defranco. How much harder would it be to find that kind of content if Youtube is flooded with big-budget Hollywood productions? Plus there’s no need for this pay-per-view service. There are plenty of options open for consumers to rent movies, most of which are probably better and more cost effective than this. Take for example the Blockbuster Movie Pass. I know I could be called biased, being that I work for DISH Network, but the service DISH put together with Blockbuster is exceptional. I’m getting instant streaming to my receiver and PC, by mail Blu-rays, DVDs, and video games that I can take in for in-store exchanges should I feel compelled to, and on top of all of that there’s also a bunch of movie channels. How are some pay-per-view offerings through Youtube going to compete with that?
