Analyst: Apple shifts from Samsung to Sharp for new 2012 HDTV displays

“Apple Inc. is shifting production of glass displays for iPhones and iPads to Sharp Corp. in Japan and may introduce a new television device as early as the middle of 2012, Jefferies & Co. said,” Sarah Frier reports for Bloomberg.

“Apple is moving its business to Sharp in Japan largely at the expense of Samsung Electronics Co., a growing rival in smartphones and tablets, said Peter Misek, a New York-based analyst at Jefferies,” Frier reports. “He wrote the research note based on a visit to Japan and conversations with manufacturing executives.”

Frier reports, “Television manufacturers, including Samsung, are scrambling to figure out what Apple’s TV will look like and do, said Misek. He said Apple will take a production line at Sharp’s Sakai facility to make a modified version of what are known as amorphous TFT displays and will likely begin commercial production of what he called iTV in February.”

  1. “Television manufacturers, including Samsung, are scrambling to figure out what Apple’s TV will look like and do, said Misek.

As with Mac OS, As with iPod, As with iPhone, As with iPad, they all look to Apple to figure out what their next product will be.
MicroSoft will, no doubt scoff at it – as they set their R&D department to copy it and their marketing to claim that they already had it.

  2. Another factor to bear in mind is what sort of signal this sends to other component suppliers who might consider shafting Apple.

Treat Apple with normal respect and they will reward you with massive orders. If you act inappropriately, Apple will dump you and place those massive orders with your biggest rival.

It’s a blow to lose a big order, but it’s a much bigger blow when your biggest competitor wins a huge order that you would have otherwise won.

  3. “Television manufacturers, including Samsung, are scrambling to figure out what Apple’s TV will look like and do..”

Is this really the best that these loser companies can do—copy Apple? Do they even have R&D departments? Pitiful that all these so-called “Apple competitors” never seem to have any good ideas of their own. May they all receive what they so richly deserve: A big fat goose egg on the bottom line.

  4. You know you’re a helluva innovative company when the mere rumor you might be entering a market causes everyone to suddenly get their shit together and re-imagine their products.

Seriously, Apple may not even enter this market but as consumers we’ll all get better televisions in a year just because our beloved fruit company MIGHT build a t.v. That’s awesome.

  5. Apple should create a counter-intelligence department that comes up with fake products and rumors… release covertly into the world false leads that are so credible that the competition actually tries to copy and beat them to the market. If nothing else, it will just confuse the “scramblers” even more than they already are.

  6. Now, that’s the type of “boycott” that will hurt Samsung. A boycott of Samsung-made parts by Apple.

Apple needs to stop (or at least minimize) funding Samsung’s copycat products.
