“Over the last 10 years, Apple Inc has done a rather amazing job of disrupting quite a few industries. By my account, it has dramatically impacted the PC, Tablet, CE, Telecom, Music and TV industries in a big way, and I believe that they are on the cusp of disrupting at least four more major industries in the next 3-5 years,” Tim Bajarin writes for Tech.pinions.
“The first industry I believe they will shake up is the TV industry,” Bajarin writes. “While Siri applied to the iPhone is a good start for Apple, I am convinced that they will apply Siri to all of their products in the future and on the TV it could have a dramatic effect on the way people interact with their televisions in the future. And since Apple can tie it to their iTunes and iCloud services as well, it will make it very difficult for competitors to catch up with them anytime soon. This will be the most disruptive thing in the television industry to happen since the introduction of color and will eventually bury the remote and put the entire TV industry on a course to use voice as the new ‘remote.'”
Bajarin writes, “The second industry Apple is poised to disrupt is the auto industry… The third industry Apple could turn upside down is the watch industry… And the fourth industry Apple could potentially impact is the appliance industry.”

I can see the TV industry being turned upside down with Siri. If you could just tell Siri what you want to watch or what to record rather than having to go through countless menus and using an on-screen keyboard, that will be way ahead of what any other TV manufacturer can offer.
As far as the auto industry…not really sure what Siri will offer more than GPS and music. Both of these already exist in the iPhone so I don’t know if they would try to get this built into vehicles. “Siri, am I about to get in an accident?”
With the watch I don’t know if they would go any further than implementing Siri on the nano. Even then, this would require at least some data access so it could be a long shot. The things most likely for a watch/iPod nano would be location based reminders and appointments. Maybe the weather and a couple other things. Beyond that, get an iPhone.
Siri in appliances? I’m not seeing it unless they want to more interface withe an iOS device. How often would you need Siri for an appliance? “Siri, cook on medium for 2 minutes.” “Siri, will you blend?”
Interesting. It’s a matter of whether Apple as a company decides to diversify to touch many other industries. Automobile manufacturers subcontract sub-assemblies such as radios and dashboard electronics to outside manufacturers, in some cases giving credit to a brand with cachet to improve the car’s own status to a prospective buyer.
It will be interesting to see if Apple is interesting in licensing Siri or other technologies in that direction, as this would be a change in strategy for the company. Typically, Apple’s products stand alone. But the adoption of an Apple standard, such as the dock connector for the iPod in every car, helped assure that Apple became the victor in the personal music player market. That was a subtle endorsement.
To see if Apple agrees to be “inside” every oven or fridge, or car, is a much larger strategic shift. While fascinating to consider, and on the surface practical, it’s a matter of whether Apple strategically sees itself moving in that direction.
As for watches, would Apple find itself commoditized, or can it truly stand out and make solid margins? I have stopped wearing a watch, as I carry one in my pocket: my iPhone.
Finally, TVs. I am still very skeptical that we will see an Apple televsion per se. Sony admitted that it’s a money-loser for the company (a bummer, because I refuse ever to buy anything by Samsung ever again). But putting the Apple TV device (that I use every night in my home) on steroids and adding Siri to the mix, either with a proprietary Apple unified remote or empowering the iPhone and iPad to replace all your remotes, bolstered by Siri, now that I could see. And buy.
