“It seems that Apple’s latest iOS 5.0.1 update released yesterday isn’t fixing the iPhone battery drain problem for everyone,” Adrian Kingsley-Hughes reports for CNET. “In fact, most users are claiming that the update is a dud, and some are saying that it makes the problem worse.”
“I’ve also heard from several developers who claimed to be getting better battery life from the iOS 5.0.1 beta that Apple made available to them earlier this week, and they claim that the release version works the same too,” Kingsley-Hughes reports. “I’ve also heard mixed responses from readers about the update.”
Kingsley-Hughes reports, “At this point it’s hard to pin down here whether this is a configuration issue, a app issue, or an issue specific to certain handsets.”

Well…. I personally own 1 million iPhone 4s smartphones and that update fixed all of them! Good job Apple.
Not me. I had no issues with the battery before 5.0.1. Now it drains completely in less than 12 hours. 🙁
My experience has been that if I set a reminder that will activate when I get to a certain location then the GPS becomes active and uses the battery up faster. But still not exhorbitantly faster.
Want better battery turn of continuous use of GPS.

Mine didn’t fix it I can’t even use my iPhone for 15 hours straight…I mean…come on my iPhone has been useless…this is ridiculus and unacceptable the update was a dud…
Before this release, I turned WiFi off and may battery life returned to normal. It seemed something had permission when WiFi was connected, to wear my battery out.
After update, WiFi connection active, no drain at all. lost 2% since last evening. WiFi connected all night.
Battery-gate…yawn…my 4S works splendidly.
I would remind everyone that recalibrating your battery by letting it drain completely and then fully recharging will likely have a beneficial effect. In fact, that’s what I’m doing now. My battery was draining pretty fast prior to the update. I haven’t charged in over 24 hours and still have 55% left. YMMV however.
I shut off almost everything a few weeks back on my 64GB 4S and can now get a whopping two whole days usage before I have to recharge. 100% charge Wednesday when I woke up and then had to recharge last night when I went to bed. I don’t check email or surf as much as I used to but it’s better than the daily recharging I had to do on my 3GS.
Ever think of getting a feature phone instead? Turning off everything defeats the purpose of getting a smart phone.

I think many have unrealistic expectations. Especially if a daily recharge is bothersome.

For the first time, I woke up this morning with almost no battery drain. Prior to the update, there was significant loss overnight. The update plainly worked for me.
I think the update worked decently well for me, but battery life is still not where I would like it to be. (the 8+ hours promised by apple)
I’m getting about 5.4 hours of light usage (texting, browsing, reading some news, and 2 phone calls)

The update was to stop the flaw for an untethered JB. They rushed it for that reason.

My 4s was 5 times better than my 4 in term of battery life. This “update” did nothing to help. My wife got the new razr (flame away!) and it just tramples the 4s in battery life and has the ability to create location based macros like “turn of gps when at home” etc. not pumping foogle here at all but apple needs to either release a flawless phone or cutting edge both not a same design with an unpolished os, brutal. Im now stuck with it for another 3 years and im not stupid and beleieve its simpily a software issue….

What sort of troubleshooting have you done to isolate the cause of the battery drain? Or are you just going to believe that the 4 and the 4S are identical units and the 4S is somehow flawed? The 4S is an entirely different unit inside, and those changes are going to be impacting the battery life. It does *more*, which means it needs more juice. So, relax into that realization and you’ll feel better. Start turning off some of the features and identify which one is causing the drain. Then take a step from there.

No, you’re conflating the various pieces of advice being given out (some accurate, some less so), taking them in aggregate, and then pretending the combined whole is what people are actually saying to do.

“Antennagate” was a minor issue, which also affects other cellphone makers, blown way out of proportion by the anti-Apple brigade. The same folks are likewise trying to make a lot of hay out of this issue. Nobody’s claiming neither of them were issues – the question is whether or not these issues are significant enough to warrant mass internet hysteria. Or uninformed grumpery such as your post here.
If these issues were truly as problematic as you’d like to paint them, why, then, did the iPhone 4 continue to sell like gangbusters, and why is the iPhone 4S likewise continuing to do so? And you can’t go with the “it’s just Apple fans” defense, as far too many people have purchased these iPhones for anyone to claim with a straight face that only “Apple fans” are doing so.
Again, only the people who have issues are likely to say so online. So anyone trying to assemble a realistic sample size for this problem, based on anonymous internet posts, is always going to get a heavily distorted picture of what’s actually happening.
Is this in any way related to the battery problem I’ve been having with my iPod touches for quite some time, since 4.0 at least? We have three and have to keep airplane mode on all the time when not needed, otherwise the battery drains in less than 24 hours on standby. This issue has yet to be resolved, even after Apple called ME about it.
How about we wait a few charging cycles before the analysts start making bold assertions about an update not even a day old? Fuck these people are fucking stupid.
i have noticed that since iOS 5, my iPhone 4 and now my iPhone 4s will automatically start streaming music over bluetooth to my car’s MS Sync when I get in… even if Sync is not turned on! It stays on, streaming away, until I force it to stop, even after I leave the car. This has continued even after the update to iOS 5.0.1 and may be part of the issue. It has to be drawing power!
