Millions of BlackBerry sufferers cut off for third day as Apple iOS 5, iPhone 4S, iCloud loom

“Millions of BlackBerry users around the world were left without text communication services for a third day on Wednesday as Research In Motion Ltd. struggled to fix what it said was a switching failure in its private network,” Georgina Prodhan reports for Reuters. “Users in Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Japan, Hong Kong and some parts of South America suffered patchy e-mail service and no access to browsing and messaging, ratcheting up negative sentiment towards a company already losing market share to Apple…”

“The outage spread to Canada in the early morning as e-mail, text services and Internet browsing stopped operating. At least one major wireless carrier appeared to restore service briefly, before the network failed again. Users in Ontario and Canada’s East Coast have taken to Twitter to report that the problems are ongoing,” Prodhan reports. “The service disruptions are the worst since an outage swept north America two years ago, and come as Apple prepares to put on sale its already sold-out iPhone 4S on Friday.”

Prodhan reports, “Many companies, no longer seeing the need to pay to be locked into RIM’s secure proprietary e-mail service, have already begun allowing employees to use alternative smart phones, particularly Apple’s iPhone, for corporate mail.”

  1. My paying MobileMe service also had sending/receiving issues in the last 2 days. Looking at the support forums, I’m not the only one and this is related to the iCoud transition.
Point I want to make is that ALL cloud services have issues from time to time, no matter who runs them. 99% of datacenter issues are human related, not technical.

  2. no one can afford the sheer high-tech & mass & cost of Apple’s triple DataCenters!

iCloud launches tomorrow Thu Oct 12!
now starts the Post-PC / Cloud era!

you naysayers: we know, we know.
    Apple does not invent.
    who cares.
they just do it better, simpler.
all that is ubiquitous, is Apple’s doing!

    dream on.
at least we’re weaponized with the real deal,
    the right stuff,
    the sublime.

you go ahead, choose your unstable, virus-prone crap,
you’ll just end up requiring viagra for your devices…
    enjoy old fools

  3. Strange, there are two NOCs at RIM, one in Canada, and one in Slough. The one in Slough feeds all the data from Europe, MidEast, Africa and Asia, so the problems in Canada, indicate that the hardware problem found in Slough, seems to also plague the NOC in Canada. Perhaps, it’s not just hardware switching that is causing problems.

  4. Having observed layoffs and seeing the wrong people let go, one can only wonder if RIMM’s problems are self inflicted. It’s sad, really, I can’t think of a better way to destroy what is left.

  5. As a Canadian I feel bad, not for the co-CEO jerk-offs but for the people who work hard everyday at RIM. If RIM goes downs the toilet, there is be financial Hardship in Waterloo (where I went to University) and at around the neighbouring universities (RIM gave a lot to them) and so forth.

Someone should kick those co-CEOs in the derriere so hard that they can wear their butt cheeks as ear-muffs this winter.

  6. I’m sorry to the BB users. I once told one of my friends about the rise of iPhones. He just couldn’t agree more with me, he stated BB will stay strong with corporate world. But I told him signs were there showing corporate already started shifted to iPhones and that will sweep across corporations. But he told me iPhone is. Othing more than a toy so I remain silent. After a while he also influenced by the rest to get a iPhone until recently he said I won’t want a iPhone fr upgrade now I want android as it gives more power and freedom to users as have what I want. So sorry for him and the Android users too. Malware infected platform is not the freedom I want
