“As promised, Apple has launched its cloud-based storage and syncing service, iCloud, to the public today,” Don Reisinger reports for CNET.
“Users who have an Apple ID can go to iCloud.com and sign in to the service,” Reisinger reports. “Users can view, add, or change Contacts, input events into Calendar, and store documents in the cloud with the help of the platform’s iWork application.”
Reisinger reports, “In addition, users who have an iPhone can use iCloud to find the device, and view it on a map. That application also features the ability to remotely lock or wipe the device in the event the handset has been stolen or misplaced.”

MacDailyNews Note: iOS devices must be running iOS 5 beta 5. Macs must be running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 Seed and iCloud for OS X Lion beta 6, Windows PCs should be recycled and users should upgrade to Macs. Failing that, they must be running Windows Vista or later, Outlook 2007 or later and iCloud Control Panel for Windows beta 4. Users with developer accounts can access these betas or wait for the public releases soon.
You can get to iCloud.com but the moving service is not available yet as of 6:15 AM PST, only open to Apple developers at this time.
Too bad for me that MobileMe mail services went down at about the same time!

…and while Apple burns its time with its latest and greatest technology, those of us who haven’t gone out to buy OS X Lion or the latest Apple devices can’t even get e-mail (from me.com). Whoppi! Aren’t we lucky!
Can anyone comment: will iCloud let new mac users sign up for a new account in this process? Apple shut down the sign-up process for MobileMe, so there is no way for new users to “sign up” to then be transitioned / moved over to iCloud…

haha.. Oh yes, Paul Thurrott is talking alot more about ‘heterogenous PC environments’ these days LMAO.. Didn’t use to be that way, if my memory serves me. I guess MS really fumbled.
I wonder how easy it is to transfer over my .mac address over. I think that I will use that one for iCloud/iTunes syncing. I then think I will add my aliases over as separate iCloud accounts so I don’t have to sort through emails that are for my wife. Has anyone transferred yet? I have an old iTunes account that I have bought music with. Hopefully Apple lets us merge those old accounts.

I posted below, I had the same problem, made me add @me to my ID, then when I went to purchase something I logged out of the iCloud ID and logged back in with my old iTunes ID, iCloud is still working, photo stream ect, and I can still axcess my iTunes content.
When I set up iCloud on my iPhone 4 and iPad , it would not except my apple ID as they now must be an email addy, I added @me.com to my ID. But then I could not axcess my iTunes account and all my purchases. I was able to go back in and log into my old ID, everything seems fine
My big question, why is iCloud not available on Snow Leopard?

I’m happy with 10.6, not ready to upgrade as only one of three Macs can upgrade, prefer to keep the same system on all three. And it’s not the $29.00

I’m wondering if Apple was really ready for what would happen when it threw the switches on iCloud. That’s a ridiculous amount of data gonna be transferred as it comes online. I expect things to be really messy for the first few weeks.
Where is the Lion update?! I can’t use Mail or iCal with my iCloud account. Why rollout iTunes yesterday and then wait on the Lion update?! Not pleased with the rollout of iCloud services so far.
This is the chicken-and-egg thing. The iCloud service is now officially out of beta and can be accessed via the web browser. However, there are no devices that officially have iColud accessibility (updated Lion and iOS5 are needed). Clearly, it would have been next to impossible to launch both the service, as well as deploy the new updates at the same time. So, they decided to first roll out the service, and once all is stable and normal, push the updates, so that people can start signing up and/or migrating their existing MobileMe accounts.
For practical purposes, nothing has changed yet for users — iCloud still isn’t available to any of us (other than developers with betas).

I wanted to sign up for iCloud, but when I went there, here are the messages that I got:
1. To sign in, set up iCloud on a device.

Last week was one of the worst weeks ever in Tech. This week is turning into the BEST with new updates to iTunes, Lion, OS 5, the cloud and the new iPhone4S. What a difference a week makes. Did I mention that Apples Stock is up too?
i have 2 emails i use, one is gmail and one is a mac email.
my gmail is on my apple id and i want to change apple id and make it my mac one as that the account i care about being synched with all my apple gadgets. when i went to apple support to switch apple id it says this:
