Siri co-founder: Apple’s ‘Assistant’ launch will be ‘world-changing event’

“On Tuesday, Apple will change the way humans interact with electronic devices. All over again,” Seth Weintraub reports for 9to5Mac.

“Perhaps the biggest announcement at Apple’s iPhone event on Tuesday will be Assistant, Apple’s evolution of the Siri Personal Assistant Software,” Weintraub reports. “Siri, you’ll remember, is the company Apple picked up for a rumored $200 million in April of last year for, in Steve Jobs’ words, its ‘Artificial Intelligence,’ not search or speech recognition.”

Weintraub reports, “SRI’s Norman Winarsky, the man uniquely positioned at the crossroads of the CALO project and the company spun off out of it talked to us about the implications of Apple mainstreaming ‘Assistant.'” [Winarsky said], ‘Make no mistake: Apple’s ‘mainstreaming’ Artificial Intelligence in the form of a Virtual Personal Assistant is a groundbreaking event. I’d go so far as to say it is a World-Changing event. ”

    1. On the other hand maybe this is precisely what he will be doing tomorrow. Maybe his health is better than people think. Steve Jobs can hardly be left out of something that is groundbreaking if he has anything to say about it.

    1. I’d love it if Apple licensed the voices/personalities of various movie AI characters. Imagine that menu!

      Choose your Assistant:
      • HAL 9000
      • Joshua from War Games
      • C3P0
      • The Terminator
      • Eddie, the shipboard computer from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

        1. Can’t be leave you guys left out the voice who played the computer on every Star Trek movie and TV show, played Majel Barrett-Roddenberry (Gene Roddenberry wife) who also played Nurse Christine Chapel and later as Lwaxana Troi.

Scottie could never replace her with a keyboard. 😉

  1. It will be a watershed moment for semantic technologies… When I saw Tom Gruber’s keynote at SemTech 2009 (google “keynote siri semtech”), I knew it was going to be just around the corner… the consumerization of AI/SemWeb

  2. My prediction is Steve jobs will appear via video(FaceTime) as he has done with others before him and technically be part of the presentation.

Tim to new iPhone: “Steve jobs”.
    Phone: “mobile or home?
    Tim: “mobile”
    Tim: “hello Steve”
    Steve:”hello Tim”

  3. Two things come to mind.

First, Newton! If it doesn’t work. Not likely.

Second, Steve Ballmers head going “pop” when he finds out how long it’ll take MS to catch up.

    1. It’s already popped, as well as those eyeballs as he sees how a sugar water CEO-less driven company continues to kick his clueless and unnovative ass hard from now on. Like taking candy from a Ballmer Baby. Pity the fools in Redmond. They don’t even know yet what’s going to hit them.

  4. So what will see is a mind-blowing demonstration. As soon as the keynote is over devs will get a new build with the Assistant technology and we will have about two to three weeks to play with it before they start shipping the phones.
    I. Can’t. Wait!

  5. i think ill pass and wait for the MS version that will ship 36 months from now.

I hear they are going bring back the product name MS BOB for their version.

i mean seriously apple wont be able to compete with something as advanced as the MS BOB DIGITAL ASSISTANT ULTIMATE SIGNATURE SERIES LIMITED EDITION

apple may be first but the boys from redmond will make it work like no other 😉

  6. I got it. I figured out Apples critic three word invite to today’s event “Let’s Talk iPhone” it doesn’t mean let us tell you about the new iPhone. it means ‘Hey iPhone; let’s talk’!
